ESPN and sports media could help the bowl situation

Dec 30, 2021, 11:14 AM

Right now, most "big" teams tend to think that if they're not in the CFP, then it's not worth it. They opt out, they transfer, or whatever. Fans don't show up, and players don't take it seriously sometimes.

This is, in large part, the fault of ESPN. Right now, at 11:07am with a bowl game scheduled for about 30 minutes from now, the lead stories on the NCAAF page are about Alabama and one about Cincy. There is no mention of the UNC/USuC game and there is no mention of any others on the "top fold" of the web site. I checked si.com and had to search to even find mention of our game. But the CFP games - not until tomorrow - dominated their coverage.

If bowls other than the CFP are to be taken seriously, then they need to be covered seriously. There have been some great matchups. And all could be spun as good matchups - even the NC/SC game: Battle of the Carolinas, new blood Shane Beamer vs old blood Mack Brown, Sam Howell's last stand, etc. There's always a spin. Any game can be hyped. The sports media needs to lay off of the CFP coverage a bit - we all know they're big games - and give some coverage to the bowls that are actually happening now or today. Even yesterday, before our game, the Sooner/Ducks game, etc, the talk was largely about the CFP.

Don't complain about players opting out and bowls being canceled and fans now showing up when you (the media) are not covering these games! There are some great games out there, but no one knows because we're getting drummed to death about the CFP teams - two of which most people are fairly tired of (Bama and UGa).

most other media outlets are not journalists.

They typically climb on a bandwagon, the flavor of the moment, so to speak and slobber themselves into irrelevancy.

Thus, you have hit the nail on the head. They do themselves and their networks a disservice, thereby also showing a gross lack of leadership within management.

Hence, why Mickey and Minnie Mouse both should be on a tear................at least with ESPINNIT.

Prolonged SEC fatigue is destroying the Bowl system.

I say that ESPN’s college football strategy is pure idiocy. They’ve taken the 2nd least populated region of the country and made them the golden calf. Only the Northern Plains region is less populated. They then compound the self-flagellation by endlessly mocking the most populated regions of the country. If ESPN is actually in business to make money, then I say that talking endless trash to 85% of their potential customers is an astonishingly idiotic strategy.

I think you’re spot-on. I never noticed the media slant before this year, because for me it was “hey, they’re advertising our game against (Alabama, Ohio state, Oklahoma, etc) and I didn’t have to think about what other teams felt like. But I noticed this year, to the point I’m really sick of it. Every ad I see reminds me they are in, and we are out. And it does seem to suggest only those four matter. I agree with you and think that attitude has carried over with fans, viewers, and advertisers to some extent.

I’ve never been an advocate for expanded playoffs, and since even the most ambitious proposals usually stop at 16 it probably wouldn’t have a made a difference this year anyway. But it has made me a bit more receptive. But that’s just my take on it

O2bnClemson - I could not agree more with you!

Increase the desire to watch and make it must see TV! As you said, "cover it like it is important"!

The novice fan, the highlight reel fans out there who carry on and say, "do away with bowls" aren't true football fans i.m.o(I am not the law so it's just my thoughts). As a true football fan who see's the value in "extra practice" leading up to a bowl game; I want them to stay forever! It's a confidence boost for the young players who have been waiting in the wings all season who have finally figured it out. Gives them a chance to put it all together and show it in a one-game situation; that momentum carries on hopefully until spring! So many situations out there can be traced to having good bowl prep practice and a change in mindset because of it. Dabo has referenced the Oklahoma game(non-playoff) and the Ohio State game(non-playoff) as invaluable to Clemson going on to win National Titles.

ESPN and the media basically treating the CFP like the NFL and everything else gets relegated to, "meh whatever"!
I do not think it's a reflection of what the consumer wants either! I think it is a lack of awareness on the industry leader to recognize a way to find out, "who's next up"! Which is how I would be spinning it as much as possible; because that's typically how it goes!
