I had lunch with a Texas die hard yesterday, we were comparing notes about fan bases and desires for instan championships, and if you dont get there, then fire the coach…. He is like many on NET that say “well who then?”……. He does think that Sark is not lor this job as he’s had the players and commitment from the school and he ain’t getting it done….

Why stay in college coaching now when it’s like the Wild West. No player contracts, have to recruit same players over and over.
I see young coached only
In the future and it will be a stepping stone to NFL.

You actually have nore control in college and in the NFL, you could lose your job 5 games unto the 1st yr if it's not going well

I'm puzzled on how is he not getting it done?

In his 3rd season he got Texas to the last 4 team playoff. Then last year he got them to the semifinal playoff game. This year, like many other high profile coaches his team has slid. But he still has them in position to get into the playoffs again. Honestly that is what I'm looking for Dabo to do. At least get Clemson back in the playoff hunt annually. Fans are weird, right?✌️😼

He is getting it done.

The agents for the coaches are laughing all the way to the bank, while the SEC ADs and fans and boosters expect every SEC team to go undefeated or have no more than one loss and they forget that these teams play each other.

If you do the math, you will find that every weekend within SEC conference games half of the teams win, and half of the teams lose. If Sark finishes the season with two or three losses, he’s doing pretty well. I would not fire him. The days of Alabama and Clemson going undefeated are over.

I just wonder why any college football coach wouldn't jump to the NFL if given

the opportunity based on today's college football environment... At least in the NFL there are well defined enforceable rules by a governing body with leveling standards in regards to pay caps, free agency, talent acquisition, etc... The current landscape of college football is one of loosely defined rules where the NCAA is scared to enforce them (thanks to the courts) because every time they try - they are taken to court and lose.

The focus of college football is no longer about educating or developing young men into people of character and preparing them for life after football (some of that may rub off along the way - but make no mistake it's about getting paid now). Instead, college football has been professionalized and with it the soul of college football has completely shifted away from "student athlete" to a business where instant results for the money spent is the expectation of the players and coaches.

Some coaches have realized this change in the college environment and have adapted their coaching philosophy to match this new reality (see Vanderbilt's coach). As far as I can tell Dabo hasn't embraced the new reality. I believe this is the reason we are struggling and will continue to struggle until Dabo decides if he can change with the new coaching paradigm.

Saban saw the shift away from the developmental coaching model to the current "all about the business model" and retired because of it. Dabo's always said he will leave if college football is professionalized - welp - those days are upon us and IMO Dabo has a decision to make and it needs to happen sooner rather than later...

I think Dabo is trying to hold on for the Super

League. Presumably it would have a level pay scale. If so, then his way of recruiting would become important again vs now which is all about which team will pay a recruit more $.

We will never be able to pay more.
We simply don’t have the resources. Smaller school with fewer alumni, less $$$$, small media market and few local corporations. If we have to rely on that “like every other contender” we ARE INDEED doomed. We better be able to find another way to draw players.

That's the rub.... Dabo's stated premise for being a coach is developing young men - he has constantly beat that drum for years. Now that the player's focus is first and foremost on money - Dabo's development premise is unimportant to the most talented players.

Some good points here. More similarities between Saban and Dabo’s philosophies than people care to admit. Saban has spoken at length about his personal evolution as a coach to developing young men and how much more successful he became as a result.
He has also said that is not possible now. Dabo is firm in his purpose. This doesn’t mean unable to adapt, but to adapt based on core principles and the realities of Clemson size ($/media, etc). Things are still evolving in the pay for play era. Perhaps there will still be a place for the develop and graduate approach to the game as things unfold.
Saban is much older than Dabo. Wisely chose big money from ESPN at his age rather than see how things settle. Certainly year to year we will see teams rise and fall with more parity and less depth (transfer rather than wait).
