Doug Flutie

Nov 21, 2015, 10:06 AM

After a long illness, Doug Fluties father passed away today. Within a few hours, his mother un-expectantly passed away as well.

My fiancee's grandparents. Her grandpa met a young lady in a bank in Italy during WWII. It was a brief encounter but he was smitten. After the war, he went back to Italy to find her. She was gone - she had been moved to a POW camp in Eritrea. He found someone in her town that knew her and gave him the info and somehow a year or so later he actually found her. He moved her to the US (Greer) and they married and raised a family (all of which are Tigers).

A couple of years ago, both of their health started failing. He had a series of strokes that left him aware, but pretty limited in his capacity and she took care of him. Then she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. With her unable to care for him, he was moved to a home and she was put in hospice, in her own home. We were in Charleston and got the call that he had died, so we drove up. The day of the funeral, we all went to see her and she was sleeping. She woke up and saw all of us standing around in our suits and said what I'm told is Italian for "I understand." And she went back to sleep.

We attended the funeral, said our goodbyes and drove back to Charleston. We weren't home 15 minutes and we got a call that she had passed.

Married something like 58 years and died a day apart. So sad, yet so beautiful. I'm not sure I'd want to go any other way myself.

But today, just 5 days later, he's actually calling the BC game. Just a complete class act of a man. His parent's should be incredibly proud of the person they raised.
