Named for Wade Hampton. He Owned many slaves. He was a Confederate General. Scarlet O'hara named her first child after him (book not the movie) They gonna rename every building that has any tied to the south like we are? Is Washington and Lee gonna rename there school? Washington owned slaves. UVA gonna change names up there too? Jefferson owned slaves. Stuffs getting ridiculous.

The period of 1815–1816 was significant because it included the college’s first experiment in slave ownership. In 1808, the board of trustees hired one slave to work exclusively for the college at the rate of $100 per year. Several years later, the board hired Jack to work in this capacity. He possessed special skills that made him an excellent asset to the chemical department, where he served as a laboratory assistant. The college purchased Jack in 1816 for $900. At this time, the board of trustees refused to pay for his board; instead, they allowed him to earn his own money when he was not working in the laboratory. This arrangement lasted for several years until the board ultimately prohibited Jack from selling his own labor, placing him under the strict supervision of Thomas Cooper, the chemical professor. Jack was the only college-owned slave ever to have the opportunity to sell his labor. The board of trustees grew increasingly rigid in its dealings with purchased slaves over time.

Surviving records from the 1830s give us a vivid portrait of the college’s transition from a reliance on owned to “hired” slaves. In 1828–1829, the board of trustees purchased two slaves, each named Jim, for a combined cost of $900. The board also purchased a carpenter, Henry, for $700. One Jim was originally hired for the science laboratory, but all three also cleaned rooms and made beds. The college provided the slaves with clothing, medical attention, and boarding in Stewards Hall, where they also waited on tables. The trustees justified the purchase of these slaves because the long-term investment was less than the cost of repeated hiring. The college’s small enrollment in the 1830s may also have made this system feasible. However, college-owned slaves were only a fraction of the total number of slaves on campus.
