There is no #41 on the roster this year so I’m going back and spotlighting a player I haven’t covered yet. So todays player spotlight goes to #53 (I already did a #53 spotlight but I didn’t see that there were 2 players with that number until it was too late. So I’m covering the other #53 today.) Joseph Roberto II. He is a redshirt freshman walk on LB for the 2025 Clemson Tigers. He “Joined Clemson as a walk-on in 2024 and appeared in one game in his debut season.” (He played special teams vs. The Citadel.) Joseph “Played both linebacker and running back at Helena (Ala.) High School as a freshman, sophomore and senior … spent his 2022 junior season at IMG Academy in Florida … scored a game-winning touchdown in double overtime to beat McAdory as a sophomore … earned first-team all-region honors as a senior … was an all-county selection in Shelby County … chose to walk on Clemson over opportunities at Georgia Tech, Maryland, Washington State and elsewhere … also played baseball at Helena.“. There is no #28 for Clemson this year (#28 is a retired number) and I’ve ran out of previous players I hadn’t covered since I started doing these player spotlights.

So I’m going to spotlight former Clemson legend #28 CJ Spiller. He is the Offensive Run Game Coordinator and Running Backs Coach for the 2025 Clemson Tigers.

Here are some key stats from his time at Clemson.

Spiller “Graduated from Clemson with a degree in sociology in three-and-a-half years on Dec. 17, 2009, receiving a standing ovation from the Clemson University Board of Trustees, the first such occurrence for a student-athlete.”

“His NFL career included tenures with the Bills, New Orleans Saints, Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets and Kansas City Chiefs, and he was a Pro Bowl selection in 2012. He and college teammate Jacoby Ford remain the only Clemson products ever to record multiple rushing touchdowns, multiple receiving touchdowns and multiple kick return touchdowns during an NFL career.”.

He was “Inducted into both the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame and South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame in 2020 for his immense contribution to athletics at both the university and state levels.”

He “Was selected for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2021, earning the distinction in only his second year of eligibility.” and “Became Clemson’s eighth inductee in the College Football Hall of Fame, joining four coaches (John Heisman, Jess Neely, Frank Howard and Danny Ford) and three players (Banks McFadden, Terry Kinard and Jeff Davis). At the time of his selection, Spiller became one of only 1,038 players and 223 coaches immortalized in the Hall, putting him at the time in the top 0.02 percent of those who have played or coached the sport.”.

Spiller was “Named as Clemson’s running backs coach on Feb. 5, 2021 after serving as an unpaid coaching intern during the 2020 season. Added the title of Offensive Run Game Coordinator in 2025.”.

“In 2020, assisted the Tiger coaching staff that helped Travis Etienne become a consensus All-American as an all-purpose/athlete selection, becoming the 29th player ever to earn consensus All-America honors at Clemson and the school’s 31st total consensus selection. Spiller and Etienne comprise two of Clemson’s three all-time consensus All-Americans at the running back position. While on staff in an unpaid role, watched Etienne break Clemson single-season records for a running back in receptions (48) and receiving yards (588) and tie the running back mark for 100-yard receiving games (two) while adding two receiving touchdowns. Etienne joined Stanford’s Christian McCaffrey, Oklahoma’s Joe Mixon and Penn State’s Saquon Barkley as the only Power Five players to post 900 rushing yards and 500 receiving yards in a single season since 2015.“

“In his first season in an on-field role in 2021, he had two different rushers (Shipley and Kobe Pace) reach 500 rushing yards, giving Clemson multiple 500-yard rushers for the sixth time in a seven-year span. Shipley led Clemson in rushing touchdowns (11), total touchdowns (11), rushing attempts (149) and rushing yards (739) in 2021, becoming the first Clemson player other than Travis Etienne or Wayne Gallman to lead Clemson in rushing since 2013 (Rod McDowell) when Shipley was in fifth grade. Shipley’s 11 rushing touchdowns matched Spiller (11 in 2006) for the second-most by a Clemson true freshman since 1972 and finished two shy of the Clemson true freshman record (Travis Etienne, 13 in 2017).”

“In 2022, guided Shipley as he became the first player in ACC history to earn first-team all-conference honors at three different positions (running back, all-purpose and specialist) and be named as one of four finalists for the Paul Hornung Award, given annually to the nation’s most versatile player. With 15 rushing touchdowns as a sophomore, Shipley joined Clemson’s Travis Etienne, Louisville’s Lamar Jackson and North Carolina’s Giovani Bernard as the only ACC players since 2000 to rush for at least 11 touchdowns in both their freshman and sophomore seasons. Also mentored Shipley as the second-year back became Clemson’s first Academic All-American since 2012.”

“In 2023, helped both Mafah (965) and Will Shipley (827) exceed 800 rushing yards, marking only the ninth time since 1948 that Clemson has produced multiple 750-yard rushers. It marked the first time two Clemson running backs accomplished the feat since 2006, when Spiller himself was part of such a duo with James Davis. Clemson was one of only six schools in 2023 with multiple 800-yard rushers, and Clemson was one of only four to accomplish the feat with multiple running backs rather than one running back and one quarterback.”

He “Guided Phil Mafah to the 24th 1,000-yard rushing season in school history and third-team All-ACC recognition in 2024.”.

It’s another double feature today.

Our first spotlight goes to #26 C.J. Kubah-Taylor. He is a redshirt freshman LB for the 2025 Clemson Tigers.

In high school he “Was a first-team All-WCAC selection in 2023 … helped Good Counsel to a 10-1 record, a WCAC title and a No. 1 final ranking in the Washington Post Top 20 in 2023 … credited with 87 total tackles (62 solo), eight tackles for loss, six sacks, three interceptions, eight pass breakups and a forced fumble as a senior in 2023 … also recovered a fumble in the WCAC championship that set-up the game-winning score against DeMatha and recorded a critical pass breakup on fourth down late in the contest … transferred to Good Counsel prior to his junior season in 2022 and posted 49 total tackles (41 solo) with three tackles for loss, two sacks, four pass breakups and an interception … helped the Falcons to an 8-3 record and a No. 6 finish in the DMV metro area that year … from the same high school as Dorian O’Daniel, a former All-ACC linebacker at Clemson who went on to win a Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs … played his first two high school seasons at Urbana in Ijamsville, Md. … played for Andy Stefanelli at Good Counsel.”.

Our second spotlight goes to #26 Jay Haynes. He is a redshirt sophomore RB for the 2025 Clemson Tigers.

He “Enters 2025 having recorded 49 career carries for 330 yards and four rushing touchdowns and nine receptions for 52 yards and a receiving touchdown in 164 offensive snaps over 16 games … also credited with 207 yards on 11 kickoff returns from 2023-24 … averaged more than 10 yards per carry in his final two seasons at Alabama’s Handley HS.”.

In high school he “Recorded 251 carries for 2,669 yards and 37 touchdowns in 24 games from 2021-22, averaging an incredible 10.6 yards per carry across those two seasons … also added 19 catches for 268 yards in that span … posted 1,888 yards on just 177 carries (10.7 avg.) and scored 27 touchdowns as a senior in 2022… had at least 100 yards in each of first five games and at least 100 in four of his last five … rushed for 476 yards, the second-most in a game in Alabama high school history, on 30 carries against Jacksonville in a matchup of two of Class 4A’s top five teams … scored five touchdowns in that game, all covering at least 52 yards (96, 58, 52, 72, 54) … that performance trailed only Tony Dixon’s 531-yard game in 2003 in state annals … in the state playoffs, rushed 25 times for 231 yards and four touchdowns against T.R. Miller and then had 217 yards and two scores on 30 carries (including a 96-yard touchdown run) against Montgomery Catholic … also had 167 yards in his first playoff game that year, giving him 67 carries for 615 yards and 10 touchdowns, an average of 205 yards and three touchdowns, across three playoff games … averaged 9.2 yards a rush in those three games … helped Handley High to an 11-2 record and the third round of the playoffs … as a junior, rushed 74 times for 781 yards (10.6 avg.) and 10 scores … totaled 15 carries for 237 yards and three scores vs. Munford … rushed 10 times for 185 yards and two scores vs. Cherokee County … played for Larry Strain at Handley High … wore No. 4.”.

He also ran track and field in high school. Per 247 sports: “Ran a wind-aided 11.35 100 as a junior. Added wind-legal times of 11.38, 11.40, and 11.51. Finished second in the Alabama 4A long jump finals with a 21-6.25 in May 2022. Added a pair of 5-8 high jumps during the spring of his junior year.”

In 2023 he “Played 14 offensive snaps in three games, rushing six times for 35 yards with a touchdown and producing two catches for 20 yards and another touchdown while redshirting … also recorded one kickoff return for 18 yards … scored two touchdowns in his collegiate debut vs. Charleston Southern, adding a rushing touchdown among his four carries for 28 yards and a receiving touchdown on a six-yard pass from Paul Tyson … became the first Clemson player with a rushing touchdown and receiving touchdown in a single game since Chez Mellusi accomplished the feat against Pitt in 2020 … rushed twice for seven yards and caught a 14-yard pass vs. Florida Atlantic … recorded an 18-yard kickoff return as an upback to set up Clemson’s come-from-behind game-winning touchdown drive vs. Kentucky in the Gator Bowl.”

In 2024 he “Rushed 43 times for 295 yards and three touchdowns and caught seven passes for 32 yards in 150 offensive snaps over 13 games … also gained 189 yards on 10 kickoff returns … rushed once in season debut vs. No. 1 Georgia … gained 49 yards on five carries vs. Appalachian State … posted 42 yards and a touchdown on eight carries and caught two passes for 17 yards vs. NC State … rushed six times for 18 yards and returned three kickoffs for 66 yards vs. Stanford … rushed once for two yards and caught an eight-yard pass at Florida State … gained 11 yards on two carries and caught one pass at Wake Forest … rushed seven times for 30 yards and caught a four-yard pass vs. Virginia … averaged 16.0 yards on two kickoff returns vs. Louisville … earned ACC Running Back of the Week after he rushed for a career-high 118 yards on five carries with two touchdowns vs. The Citadel, representing the fourth time in school history that a Clemson player rushed for 100 yards in a game on five or fewer carries; he joined Lyn-J Dixon (four carries for 116 yards vs. Louisville in 2018), Ken Moore (five carries for 152 yards vs. The Citadel in 1954) and Jim Reynolds (five carries for 105 yards vs. Presbyterian in 1945) … rushed twice for 11 yards vs. No. 16 South Carolina … rushed five times for 15 yards and added a 16-yard kickoff return vs. No. 8 SMU before exiting the game with a knee injury.”.

Jay was “Born Jan. 21, 2005 … signed with the Clemson program on Dec. 21, 2022 … enrolled at Clemson in summer 2023 … parks, recreation and tourism management major.”.
