One night after a Bowl Game was staying downtown and hit the Underground.
Good food, and later a guy doing a cover of Otis Redding came on.
The guy was amazing.

Reminds me of the first time I went to NYC. I've got family that watches the news and ID channel religiously. I think it was around the time the knifings were going on in the subway so family thought we'd be at risk basically every time we stepped out the door of something bad happening.

Nope. NYC felt pretty safe walking around. Only time I felt uncomfortable was during rush hour in Times Square because I had some folks getting a little close and I knew pickpockets are still a thing. Granted, I basically stayed in at night because I'm not about the night life but seemed like most rules would apply of don't put yourself in a bad spot and you'll likely be fine.

Even in ATL, I felt fine taking MARTA from the airport to Buckingham at night and the day.

I’m not trying to say there’s anything wrong with having a gun; I just think it’s unnecessary for most people. You used to be in law enforcement right; so I can see how you’ve become accustomed to having a weapon. I don’t go places that I feel are unsafe; also I’m kind of a big guy so people don’t usually try to eff with me. I haven’t done any real research but it seems that the instances where violent random attacks are thwarted by just a regular person carrying a weapon are rare; It’s usually someone from law enforcement that steps in. I can see having a few people at church or gatherings like that who are designated to carry a weapon, but just regular everyday trips to the piggly wiggly seem unnecessary.

I have a CCP but never carry on my person although I have one in my car and usually nearby. I can’t imaging ever want to go to the city of Atl unless driving directly to the airport. One of the reasons I stopped going to the ACCCG was walking through the city at 1:00 AM on the way home with no option to carry as you get checked going into the game

gun are reported and presuming law enforcement would encourage this behavior with a press conference or headline. There's no real incentive for the civilian to report the incident unless the need for attention outweighs the hassle of a visit to the police station to report>interrogation which hypothetically could lead to a random inhome follow-up visit by law enforcement where a victimless crime may or may not be taking place. Collectively law enforcement officials would prefer that no-one outside of the police carried firearms as this would make their duties much easier, significantly safer and at the same time increasing the public's dependence on law enforcement agencies. There's no incentive for police officials to voluntarily acknowledge an incident of success, only an incident of failure-

Except I disagree about increasing dependence since there would be much less violent crime to police. Now I know this is fantasy land since the bad guys have guns it's necessary to let the good guys have em too.

Problem is, you don't know the time you'll need it and in this world the law of averages is scary with regard to self defense. As an OTP Atlanta area person , I wouldn't dare enter the perimeter without carrying. The ostensibly/formerly safe areas are far from it.

I used to carry, up until about 18 years ago. After a good deal of thought, I arrived at 2 truths that I thought i should heed.
#1 - My temper is too hot.
#2 - not one time ever in my entire life have I had the thought, boy, that sure would’ve worked out better if I had a gun.

So no, I don’t carry.

Pretty much everything north of of the perimeter is pretty safe - it’s not atlanta, it’s south Tennessee!

The area near the braves stadium is nice and gentrified. The area west of the Benz is a lil sus - but is going to be super nice in 10-15 years.

What is so stupid about that post? Just don’t hang out in bad areas isn’t always practical or possible. What if you are a stranger in a town or city & don’t know about the bad parts of town. What’s stupid is having the ability to have something on you for your protection but not actually having when you need it. It’s always better to have something on you & not need it then need something & not have it on you. I carry everywhere I go. In fact I avoid any areas where you aren’t allowed to conceal carry. One of the most fundamental rights if not the single most important one is to the right to self defense.

I’ve lived in Atlanta or right around it for virtually all of my 48 years and I’ve never been the victim of a crime. My mom is an Atlanta native in her 70s and has never been the victim of a crime. Unless you live in a neighborhood that is a high crime area or you are out at 2 am somewhere you shouldn’t be you’ll be just fine.

Hope football season starts soon, y’all are reaching for something to discuss on a Sports Board. Not planning on carrying anything but a loud voice to help pull Tigers through when we play Tech in September.

Some people might see this as politics. I disagree. This guy is an entertainment critic, but he does provide a counterpoint to those of you that feel the need to carry a gun because Atlanta is so dangerous.

Absolutely! I always have my PPD on me in any city. Especially since my son in law was murdered in Newark, NJ!
