DJ lacks

1. Rhythm- when he drops back in a 3 or 5 step the ball should come out on the gather. When qbs hold the ball after the gather that’s when bad things happens. Trevor did the same thing but he was a generational talent and got away with it. DJ is not generational.
2. Poise- he gets flustered when his 1st read isn’t open hence the deer in headlights looks. This causes him to be nervous and release the ball in his motion early causing the high throws. If you look at the he usually misses high.
3. Touch- he only has a fastball and no change up. The dump pass he had to Shipley yesterday flew past his head because of this. Streeter should of noticed this in practice.
We fell victim to have back to back generational talents at QB. The coaches became complacent due to getting bailed out by the players. Dabo needs to re-evaluate quickly if he wants continue building his legacy. Dabo is too nice to a fault but he needs to make the hard decisions. It may cost friendships or hurt feelings but that’s why he get paid millions.

3) Fastball - I hear Monte could use a 95 mph closer.

Wasn’t he a closer in high school?

Yes. And it one time had Major League aspirations. Said it was really tough to give up baseball when he came to Clemson.

He may need to revisit it. Maybe that’s his calling

Besides all the passing issues, he’s too slow to be a running threat. Sure, he busted a nice one yesterday on a scramble, but he’s too slow to run the zone read on the end. It’s the foundation of our running game and he can’t do it!!

He definitely is too slow for it but he doesn’t even attempt to pull it unless the coaches call for it. You have to aleast keep the D end honest or he will crash down every time plugging running lanes

His release has gotten longer since HS.

He's dropping the ball almost to his hip like a 6th grader on mid-range passes or longer.

It is very long and allows dbs to catch up. He won’t make the NFL without major changes to his fundamentals

I remember Tajh really had this problem, and he would spend

a ton of time throwing passes with his back against a wall so he couldn't take the ball further back than his head. (Note: I'm not comparing Tajh's potential upside to DJ's).

I have noticed this works extremely well for him when he is rolling and throwing to the right, but not so much to the left. I think coordinators figured this out too, see his two near-inceptions against GT and State where he has such a slow windup that the back is already in front of the receiver before the ball leaves his hand.

Perhaps why he looked so good last year? No one had any film on him? Then ND figured it out in overtime a la the last couple plays in that game.

I just worry this season will evolve into the Cullen Harper experience 2.0.

Great comparrison. I'd move Taylor to slot, get our young OL talent in the game, and even give briningstool plenty of reps.
Obviously this is definitely a rebuild year. Try to get all your pieces in place for next year... Then hope Tyler D comes back to anchor the D. 2018=2022 - either DJU gets it or we transition to Cade.

I just remember the offense devolved into a situation where every third and long, and there a lot of them, Harper getting flushed out to his right, and more often than not, just running out of bounds. at that point, we knew Spence had lost the offense.

Lots of truth in this…I’ve tried to fight the inevitable all year in hopes of a quick turnaround or hopes of a light coming on…this isn’t a little problem with a quick fix however and I have to accept it…this is a big problem and will require a long term fix, as in the rest of this year and into the spring and fall of next year…there are issues at every offensive position group and there are issues in the design, philosophy and master plan…to many holes in the #### to plug!

I believe issues stem from the qb position. I may be in the minority but the oline isn’t terrible. A lot of the sacks come from DJ holding the ball. The qb should be calling out protections when you’re a top rated qb. DJ not pulling the ball fo run the read option hurts the run game because they aren’t looking at him as a runner til they need too. Look at when Taisun came in how open Shipley got. They knew he could run too.

Exactly why I go back to the coaches. When CBV realized what he had 2 years ago, he did a complete transition to a 3 man front and carried us to the championship game.
It's almost like TE said we're going to try and make DJ=DW4/TL16 instead of the CBV model and adapt the offense to what he had in DJ. Yes/no? Just asking. Appreciate the x and o discussions.

This. Exactly right. Makes me wonder how much greater DW4 and TL16 would be with a real OC

You hit the nail on the head!! BV is a hell of a coach and was able to adapt our defense to accommodate our weakness. Elliott clearly can’t do that with our offense.

Has he EVER thrown a tight spiral? Much easier to catch tight spirals than those wobbly missiles.

Much harder for a hitter to hit, as well. Move to baseball pitcher, DJ. Our team needs you.

I would also add...

that DJ seems to lack anticipation which then affects his accuracy and ball placement on his passes.
I'm starting to think one of the reasons he throws nothing but fast balls is that he has trouble anticipating where the ball needs to be in time and space in relation to the receiver/defender (i.e. ball placement). Because he struggles with anticipation he holds on to the ball for a long time and then tries to make up for the delay with a fast ball in which the results speak for themselves.
Well coached QB's will throw their receivers open in tight coverage and put the ball to where only the WR can catch it. In order to do that they have to develop anticipation which is usually only gained by lots of reps with those receivers. It is very rare for DJ to throw a ball so that the moment a receiver turns the ball is hitting him in the numbers or is laid right on their back shoulder away from the defender.
The shame of it is that I think DJ has the ability to do a lot better with his ball placement but for some reason or another (combination of coaching, reps with receivers, route confusion ???) has failed to develop in this area and is relying on fast balls the way he did in high school.
