DJ hate

7 WRs hurt 3 freshmen RBs Mediocre OL
We started Will Swinney in the slot for the final 3 games. And two true freshmen alongside him. Pace and Shipley aren’t the receiving threats that Etienne was. And neither are the home run threat that he was either.
Perspective is important.
We return our top 6 offensive linemen next year. Pace, Shipley, and Mafah will be a three-headed monster. Davis Allen and Briningstool at TE. Hopefully Ngata and EJ can stay healthy for a full season. Beaux and Dacari showed a ton of promise. Spector, Stellato, or Will Taylor could emerge in the slot.
DJ is still that guy that torched BC and ND last year. He just didn’t have much help around him this year. Calm down.

People don’t hate DJ the human being. A vast majority hate DJ the QB. Because DJ the QB is not good enough to be the QB at Clemson. That’s all there is to it. Cade Klubnick will be here in a few weeks to right the ship.
Maybe you should calm down? There won’t be much to complain about soon concerning DJ the QB.

If u say “DJ hate”, it sounds much more dramatic and turns it into a victim vs perpetrators situation. Have to love the dramatization of it

If DJ knows more than Cade, I’m scared. If your opinion becomes what happens we are effed. DJ is the worst QB in the nation by a long shot. And your saying without saying that Cade is a bust. Really hope you prove to be wrong.

I’m talking about DJ the QB. Everything I mentioned was about him as a QB. How he had play with a ton of injuries, freshmen, and walk-ons.
Trevor had a healthy Tee Higgins, Hunter Renfrow, Amari Rodgers, and Justyn Ross his freshmen year. He had Higgins, Amari, and Ross his sophomore year. He had Amari, Cornell, and EJ his junior year. Trevor had Travis Etienne every year. He had our best OL in Dabo’s tenure.
Deshaun had Mike Williams, Renfrow, Artavis Scott, Deon Cain, and Ray Ray McCloud. Deshaun had an experienced Wayne Gallman at RB. He had Jordan Leggett at TE. He had an above average OL that stayed healthy all year.
DJ had Beaux Collins, Dacari Collins, Will Swinney, and Will Brown for his final 3 games this year. He had three freshmen RBs. He had a banged up OL that was mediocre at best.
Perspective is important.

It really worries me about all this talk about Cade. He has already been put on a pedestal by a lot of TNetters. I know the division he played in Texas is as big as it gets, but it’s still High School! I’m concerned a lot of you are setting him up for failure with your high expectations. What happens if he isn’t any better than DJ, then what?

I have this concern too. DJ was great in HS too.
However, it’s hard to be worse than DJ did this year in terms of QBR, so I think if CK has a pulse he will be better out there than DJ.
If neither is good, it’s going to be another really tough year.

Agreed not all on Dj but a good portion was. He made poor decisions at times, poor defensive reads, was inaccurate on deep balls, stared receivers down, and seldom went through his progressions. Some of that was due to poor O line play some due to youth. Countless dropped passes but also countless missed passes to wide open receivers. Blame does go all around. That being said if he is the starter next year I will be right there cheering on our Tigers no matter who is on the field playing. A Tiger is a Tiger and a name on the back of that jersey doesn't change that.

“We played really poorly around him earlier in the year” - Dabo, in his post game presser
We dropped 30+ passes in the first 6 games. Many would have been first downs in big situations (Galloway vs UGA). Some would have been for TDs (Ross vs NC State). We had WRs run poor routes that led to INTs (Ross vs UGA). We had offensive guards running into each other (Tate and Putnam vs GT).
Dabo said the players around him played poorly around him. The stats certainly bear that out. Plus, the coaching has more knowledge about the offense than we do.
Maybe you disagree with the coaches.

Dabo said the players around him played like crap. I’ve never played QB, but I’d imagine it would be pretty tough with my WRs, RBs, and OL playing like crap. But I’m just repeating what Dabo has said. Maybe he’s wrong. I don’t know. I’m not in the film room with them. I don’t the exact routes our WRs are supposed to run.

Worst QBR in the ACC. Worse than ALL of the QBs in the rest of the conference. Teams that definitely had worse WR corps and OL than Clemson. You can keep making excuses for DJ, but the numbers can't be ignored. He was terrible this year.

He's a grown man. I'm not piling on, I'm discussing his season with facts and challenging the opinions of another user. That's sort of the point of a discussion forum. If you can't handle it then go find a safe space where no one disagrees with you.
As if DJ even reads TNet or cares what anyone here thinks. Get a grip.

I would tell him his numbers to his face just as I did above to Trotsky. If he can't handle that then he shouldn't be anywhere near a D1 football roster.
Again, if you are unable to have a rational discussion without insulting people, you shouldn't be on a discussion forum where opinions differ.

Go back to 2019, Trevor’s sophomore year. Amari Rodgers was still recovering from his torn ACL. Justyn Ross moved to the boundary position. Diondre Overton becomes the starter in the slot. Travis Etienne is still our RB.
Trevor struggled those first two games with Higgins, Ross, and Overton as his starting 3. Against Georgia Tech and Texas A&M, Trevor was 37/57 (65%), 218 passing per game, 2 TDs and 3 INTs. He had all 6’4 WRs on the field, no true slot, and no threat in the screen game. Then, Trevor got Amari back in the slot. He got a WR that could take a screen 80 yards for a TD, like Amari did in his first game back against Syracuse. And Trevor started playing better. Again, keep in mind he had Higgins and Etienne all year. Trevor also had three offensive lineman starting that got drafted, plus 2 more seniors in Cervenka and Pollard.
DJ starts this year against UGA, with the best defense in college football. He didn’t start against an awful GT team like Trevor did. DJ had the same probably at WR, we were starting all 6’4 guys (Ross, Ngata, Ladson), with no true slot, and no threat in the screen game. Trevor didn’t have the best RB in school history though, he had Lyn-J (who transfers later) and two freshmen. And DJ has a much worse offensive line than Trevor did.
So, naturally, DJ struggles early on like Trevor did. The difference? Trevor had better players around him, while DJ’s best players start getting hurt. Ladson goes down first, then Ngata, then Ross, EJ played hurt all year. DJ never had a WR as good as Tee Higgins. DJ never had a WR like Amari Rodgers. DJ never had a RB as dangerous as Etienne. And DJ never had a great offensive line, like Trevor did.
This is what Dabo meant when he said that all of his QBs have struggled, but we weren’t as good around DJ as the other guys. He was right. DJ struggled with all 6’4 WRs starting, just like Trevor. Then, all of them get hurt, and he finishes the season with a walk-on and two true freshmen.
Perspective…

Dabo is never going to throw any of his players under a bus, especially not his starting QB. DJs a great kid and I can’t understand anyone not wanting to see him come out blazing next year and be the man but this year he missed way more passes than were dropped and in general his decisions were not good. Numbers don’t lie- he had more picks than TDs, was very near the very bottom rated QB in all of CFB and was personally responsible for opponents scoring 34 points against us. That’s not hate, that’s facts. Hers to hoping that he is as good next year as he was bad this year. If so, we’re back in the CFP.

Agreed. I think that we will also learn about how far from 100% he was physically as the weeks go along. We had no real back up that we could win with (which is a different issue altogether), and scrapped to finish the season 10 - 3.
It's been disappointing for me to see so many of our fans go after DJ. Has it been the season that we all hoped for? Not by a long shot, but I'm sure no one is more than the players and coaches.
Things just didn't come together for us like they have in season's past, but he hopefully the coaches will make the necessary adjustments to get us back to the CFP.

I second that motion! We are just so spoiled with greatness at that position that the word development has not been largely associated with it in awhile. This kid has the tools, he just needs to put it back together.
And us grown a$$ men hating on him is not going to help at all. Let’s get behind our boys. Whoever walks out there first next season, earned it.

People act like we had Higgins, Renfrow, Amari, and Etienne surrounding him. We lost 7 WRs to injuries. All of our RBs were freshmen. Our offensive was mediocre and depleted.
It’s not like he was playing with dudes that are going to start in the NFL next year. Trevor and Deshaun had dudes around them. DJ didn’t.

So what’s the excuse for DJ being in accurate, not being able to read a defense, not being able to check into a better play, constantly making the wrong read, being 30 pounds overweight, starring down receivers, looking like a robot out there?
Is that the receivers and players around him faults also?

I don't hate anyone on our team. I just call it like I see it. D.J. is slow. D.J. makes horrendous mis reads. D.J. overthrows the long balls so bad no one could catch them. D.J. does not run through progressions. D.J. can't reliably hit short passes. Unless he vastly improves, we can not win a Natty with him. If you think he is the man who will win us another Natty, so be it. We simply disagree. Do we want a top program or a decent program. If we don't want to "cycle out", we better cycle in a lot of new talent at Q.B.

Go back and look at the BC and ND games last year. DJ had Amari and Cornell at WR and he had Etienne at RB. Surround him with legitimate weapons, he thrives. Surround him with freshmen and walk-ons, he struggles. Funny how that works.

There are things you can blame on lack of receiving talent. You can't blame horrendous coverage misreads on that. You can't blame over throwing on that, unless you are going to say our lack of 8ft tall receivers with 48" vertical leap is why DJ is bad.

Why is Trevor struggling this year in Jacksonville? I’m sure you’ll argue that his supporting cast is pretty bad. Even though he has 9 TDs to 14 INTs, you’ll put most of that on his WRs, RBs, and OL.
DJ’s supporting cast was also pretty bad this year.

We get it.
You think DJ isn't as bad as a lot of people do.
The dude throws 10 interceptions and 9 TDs, has one of the lowest QBR ratings in the country (#99 out of 125). And I am sure some of those 98 other QBs would rather have our OL and WR even with Swinney and the injuries.
Hate though? No one hates the guy just don't think he's a good QB - big difference.

I have been in the critical column on DJ all year but after listening to Dabo and reading a few other opinions I’m ready to say I have been wrong. I’m grateful for his courage and fortitude this season, cannot argue that his support has been depleted. I’m sure of one thing no one is more disappointed with how this season turned out then DJ. Cades presence will insure our confidence in the QB position will be greatly improved next year regardless of who emerges as starter. I’m pulling for DJ! If we do not get better QB play next year, we will not win

a playoff game regardless of how much better the rest of the offense plays or our defense plays.
It is important that our QB make good decisions, have good mechanics and accuracy, be able to move his feet when things break down which they inevitably do, and either make a play in the throwing game or by running it himself. DJ was not good at those things this year. No matter who was playing at the other positions.
Before the game last night in the radio broadcast interview with Coach Swinney, he was commenting on Coach Streeter getting the OC job. He mentioned Streeter's work with DeShaun Watson, Trevor Lawrence and soon to be Cade Klubnick. No mention of DJ. He's compared him to DeShaun Watson with more speed. Sounds like he knows something.

Hope springs eternal. I think everyone would love to see DJ come into form

Next season. And in my opinion the WRs were terrible this year. Decimated by injury but didn’t get any separation, dropped passes, didn’t fight to prevent interceptions and couldn’t block anyone. Just waaaay below our standards. RB emerged as a great asset, and I thought the OLine started playing really fine by the end of the year.
But a lot of DJ’s throws were ducks and way off the mark. He fixated on his target. His running was slow. There is much to be done to improve his performance. I’d love to see it but it will be a lot of work.

DJ is a well mannered young man who has been one of the worst starting QB’s in the country in 2021.
He was a recruiting miss who did not attend the top h.s. QB camps where his shortcomings would have been better identified. That said, DJ’s lack of mobility, lack of accuracy, inability to audible, inability to hit secondary & tertiary receivers, and inability to lead greatly impacted other 2021 starters and players. From game 1 to the bowl game, it was clear T.E., Street and Dabo did not respect DJ’s skill sets and his ability to make routine plays. In turn, this impacted Clemson game planning and opposing coaches’ success in game planning against a very predictable Tiger Offense.
Hate is not the right word. It’s disappointment. There is a difference between hating a player and understanding how his play negatively impacted the team. I’m usually a fan of your posts, but in this post, you seem to blame injuries and other players for DJ’s shortcomings.
If W. Swinney starts ahead of Ajou, it’s because coaches believe Swinney is more effective. It’s next man up. It’s best is the standard. No excuses. And Tigers got the job done in the bowl game. Job well done! Now it’s time to rest, and then develop and prepare for 2022 with competition at every position including QB.

Instead of using the word “hate,” we could just state the blatant facts? DJ is a great young man; however, you need a commander in chief like DW4 and TLAW were. There were problems all around him… yes. Not denying that fact. But when the offensive line is protecting him good and he throws it 10 feet over the receivers head, there is obviously a problem there. When he has an open lane to run and gain a first down and he fails to tuck it and run, there is a problem there. I hope he fixes this and gains chemistry with the receivers coming back + the new ones. It seems as if the biggest thing he lacks is confidence in the pocket. I know he has talent… he has a good arm. But there are just some obvious things he needs to do in order to keep the starting job next year. Maybe he needs that fire under him with Cade coming.

After seeing the coaching staff hang with DJ all year I would say we may all be in for a surprise when DJ ends up starting next year. Possibly the whole season. I think Dabo hangs with him regardless.

i feel sorry for him. I also admire him for not quitting midseason. But the poor kid was just awful over all. Every play was an adventure with him. I cursed the first couple of games, but then realized that is the way he is. Slow. Moves slow. Reacts slow. Thinks slow. Has a strong arm, no doubt, but never looked like a division one qb.

Excellent post. Cade will be our starter day 1. Clemson will be in a much better position to be back to normal.

Cade will not be the starter day one.

DJ will be the guy in the spring, in fall camp, and when the regular season starts.
Dabo is big on veterans getting the benefit of the doubt. We will hear a lot of Dabo saying that DJ is a leader and has worked hard and is the starter. We will hear about how much he has improved.
Cade will play, but he will have to prove himself in real games. We will hear a lot about how hard he’s working and how he is improving, but still has a lot to learn about our complex offense.
I’ll be shocked if Cade starts by game 3 or 4. I think there is a very good chance Cade doesn’t start until 2023.

The transfer portal changes the whole seniority BS he does. If that trash can is allowed to trot out there next year before Cade, this is assuming he isn’t a bust like DJ, then he will take his as and talents back to Texas. Can’t play those games anymore. Players will leave. And if he is a bust and can’t eat out a historically bad QB, we will struggle to win 10 games again or the ACC.

Hate is a strong word....how about unsuccessful....Love DJ as a person/student, but as a QB he falls short of "good". His year was mediocre at best. When you throw as many interceptions as touchdowns, it's proof in the pooding. We will see what spring practice brings. i do believe in Dabo's decisions.....Go Tigers!!

A solid assessment. I am pulling hard for him to find his way out of this sophomore slump and be the starting QB next year. I think many of us are perplexed to see quarterbacks like Sam Hartman and Kenny Pickett have much better years with comparable -- at best -- supporting talent, especially considering what DJ did last year in limited action.

Trotsky, you were a brilliant Russian and a very smart Tiger. DJ could not have won games by himself and he did not lose them by himself either.

He looks good in the passing drills. Maybe flag football better suits him. Plus he doesn’t have to take hits.
