Give Bowen's Island restaurant a try. Excellent seafood.
It's certainly not fancy and it isn't cheap but it's not overly pricey either.
Most meals are in the $15-$20 range.
They give a good amount of food that makes you feel better about the prices too.
There is also a great view if you eat on the porch during daylight hours.
I also recommend Kaminsky's if you are looking for some dessert after one of your meals.
There is a downtown and a West Ashley location.

Is this the place we called "Ma Bowens Island" that was off a dirt causeway on James Island? There was a ramshackle pier, and the old man sat by the fireplace talking about aliens. Thick oak tables were carved up by all the past customers and included Charles Karault among other famous folk. I remember a paper plate of fried shrimp for 99 cents.

Bowen’s island raises there own oysters. All are clusters. Steamed in the basement( if you wanna call it that). Certainly not fancy but good food good price.

It has a slightly different look now because they had to rebuild.
There is more delicious food there than just the oysters.
We have really enjoyed everything we have ordered.

one booth and all the mixed tables and chairs. The juke box had Autumn Leaves and Yellow Rose of Texas. Rest of records were all scratched beyond hearing. The food was inexpensive and cheap.
They cooked everything on a regular range. It took forever but we didn't care. More time to drink. The old man was Mr Bowen. He was neat guy but hard of hearing. He had that huge black and white tv in there on loud. We could watch entire Jackie Gleason.
The rest rooms were outside. I went out one night and it was pitch black. The tide had come in and I found myself up to my shins in salt water. Had to leave by the in road that night. Great memories.

Bowen’s Island Restaurant is the best place for them in the Charleston area.
Oysters are freshly steamed by covering a bushel-sized heap of ‘em with wet burlap sacks on top of a piece of sheet metal over a wood-burning open fire. Rustic is an understatement, but the quality of the seafood there can’t be overstated.
For the best value/quality combination of a fresh portion of breaded, fried shrimp, try Dave’s Soul Food in downtown. Hole in the wall for sure, but delicious.

Yes the food is amazing but their prices have gotten RIDICULOUS. The Seafood platter is close to if not over $30 bucks now.
Head up to Awendaw and check out the Seewee restaurant. Some of the best southern and fried seafood you’ll have in the area!!!

You need to experience DOWNTOWN Charleston. There are tons of nice restaurants on IOP, Sullivans, Mt P, etc but the downtown experience is impossible to replicate. If eating downtown check out Fleet Landing. They have mostly local seafood, shrimp and grits, a few pasta dishes, chicken, etc. Plus it is the only restaurant downtown on the water.

Do not go to Hymans....i repeat....do not go to Hymans. That's a tourist trap and with soooo many good places to eat in Charleston don't waste your money. Halls Chophouse, Bowens Island, Poes Tavern, Malagon, Pan e vino, Husk, Jestines Kitchen, Fig, Fleet Landing, Hanks, The Ordinary.....the list goes on...i threw in some fine dining and 2 off the beaten path Italian an spanish. And of course bbq....rodney scotts, lewis, home team, dukes just to name a few.

Expensive is relative in Charleston these days. If you don't want to eat fast food then you're gonna pay. If you want good food you're gonna pay. Not all of the places i mentioned will bust your wallet but sometimes it's worth it to spend a little more than you would for a great meal.
Since you're calling me out....do you live in Charleston? Do you know what the food scene looks like around here?

For the price, Hyman's is solid food.
I'm surprised that you, of all people, would criticize Hyman's, as it is an important part of Charleston's history and traditions. You're likely to offend a lot of Charleston residents, visitors, and fans by disrespecting it like that.

Some call it a tourist trap, but if you want to dine at a Charleston institution, go to Hyman's Seafood. Their food is good, and it won't break the bank.
Fleet Landing is a little more expensive than Hyman's, but has outstanding views overlooking the water.
For true Southern cooking, Jestine's is really good.
I'm sure someone will mention Bowen's Island. I personally don't care for it. Disgusting place with dead cockroaches all over the floor. I guess that's part of the appeal for people who just want to go shuck their own oysters, but with all of the great restaurants in Charleston, I'd skip it.

Hymans is a Charleston institution for tourists only. Locals don’t eat there and never have.
Fleet Landing is a tourist trap as well, the view is nice if a ship isn’t in.
Jestines is real deal delicious, but go early or later as there is always a decent line
Bowen’s used to be great but tourist hype made them sell out on quality and stick with quantity only

Ah....now it makes sense. You're a fan of Hymans. No one local goes to Hymans. The food is garbage. Bowens island is what it is...bare bones, good fried or grilled seafood and a lot of it. I have been to bowens dozens of times and never seen dead cockroaches "all over the floor". Several people on here have mentioned the wreck in mt p. Same type of place and it's good too.

SUNFLOWER CAFE West Ashley for breakfast or lunch. Not fancy, but locals love it. Rated 16th best benedict in the nation and best sandwich in Charleston. Lived in Charleston all my life Don't get caught up in all the downtown hype unless you're looking for ambiance. Best food to eat is in small, family owned local restaurants.

Try Burrell’s (try the steaks and you have to have the deviled eggs) at the end of the Market or Fleet Landing (great seafood) just across the street.

For real Charleston soul food go to Martha Lou’s.
The wreck is a good go to but prices have gotten higher lately last few years.
167 Raw is quite good on east bay and not overpriced for the quality
Seafood is tough here. Locals don’t go out for it much since most fish, crab, shrimp etc themselves so they typical cater to the touristy expectation. Hymans is a perfect example.
If I were you I’d hit a few places grab a drink a dish or two at each; that’s what we do. Eating at the bar is always more lively.
Pearlz, FIG, Ordinary, darling oyster bar, 167 Raw, there tons of good seafood places.
Money wise downtown you get what you pay for. Dining is expensive here but generally worth it; if it’s cheap and below Spring street there a reason why.

I always felt 167 raw was overpriced for what you get but so are most seafood restaurants in Charleston. I have heard good things about the royal tern on johns island but have yet to try it. Codfather is technically seafood albeit the British version but it's good stuff.

Gilligan’s on Main Rd has decent & moderately priced seafood (and an all u can eat shrimp that you have to ask for - not on the menu!); the Glass Onion on Savannah Hwy, there is a Pearlz (already mentioned downtown) in Avondale, and lastly an unknown even to longtime locals: The Fish Net on Sav Hwy in Red Top area (if you pass KFC you missed it!). The Fish Net is a fresh seafood market where you can also pick your fish & they’ll prepare it. Can’t get much fresher! I’ve only had their fried shrimp and they were good.
The seafood hole in the wall I really miss is the old Anchorline on Folly Rd right before Folly River. It was one of the few places that served really great shark! Used to love taking company from “off” and seeing their faces when I’d order shark! My Dad Joke was to tell em the shark isn’t a bitter seafood - depending on who they’d eaten! And, no bones to choke on! (Sharks have NO bones!).

much from the outside but the food is great and it's not too pricey. Its probably my favorite restaurant on this side of downtown.
My favorite restaurant downtown for southern comfort type food is still Magnolias. It's not cheap but it's not crazy expensive either and it has it's own free parking lot which is a huge perk for me.
82 Queen is excellent as well. There's a reason some of these restaurants have been there forever and are still popular.

For $20-$25 per person Leon’s is a pretty good option in Downtown.
If you are looking for lunch and like fried chicken sandwiches I would recommend Boxcar Betty’s. It is a local chain with a few locations around Charleston.
If you are in the mood for BBQ try Rodney Scott’s.

We’ve always had great food at Mex 1 Coastal Cantina. They have a few locations (Sullivan’s Island, West Ashley) and good mex take on tacos and shrimp tortas.

What's the local take on Shem Creek? My wife worked there part time 30 yrs ago right after she graduated and was living in mt pleasant. I've never been there but my Dept Chair recently told me it's one of his faves in Charleston area.

Check out Sullivan’s island:
Obstinate daughter for nice dinner.
Poe’s is a great hamburger.
Home team barbecue for good food to go (must get a game changer while there as well).
Halls steakhouse (downtown) for great service and steakhouse meal.
So many other good restaurants depending on what you are looking for.

Some that I haven’t seen mentioned yet I know are quite good would be stars rooftop, Anson’s, and tavern and table!! Steak at both Anson’s and stars was phenomenal and tavern had some rocking shrimp and grits!!

Quite a few have mentioned Bowens Island and I also recommend going there. It's a place you got to eat seafood the way it was meant to be eaten and also enjoy a brew or two. Since you have not been back since 74 I am sure you probably remember the original Trawler on Shem Creek.
A good many years ago before the Trawler burned my best girl and I spent a lovely Labor Day weekend in the Holy City. So we headed out on Saturday evening to the Trawler for some of their famous crab dip and a good meal. We were seated and we immediately noticed the table next to us. There was a hoity toity couple and their two kids. The kids were absolute hellions, the were dumping the salt and pepper shakers, throwing menus and silverware off the table, turning chairs over and just being plain obnoxious. They then started crawling underneath the table and pulling on the table cloth. Never once did the hoity toitys ever correct them. Then one of the hellions came out from beneath the table and took the burning candle off the table and went back under the table. You could hear them giggling, and all of a sudden the table cloth blazed up opposite of where the couple were sitting. The hoity toitys then began yelling for help and several servers saw what was happening and charged over with pitchers of water and drowned the four of them. To this day I still believe the servers had a little fun at the expense of the hoity toitys. Mean while my best girl and I were LOAO!

Charleston Culinary Tours does walking tours with stops at several different restaurants along the way. It looks like they sprinkle in some history as well. I’ve never done one, but they have good reviews. I think it looks pretty cool. Could be a fun way to try several different places and get a walking history tour in as well.
