Did a light come on for DJ?

Sep 25, 2022, 7:43 AM

Seems like he was definitely more poised in the pocket yesterday, making consistent multiple reads.
What happened to our old QB?

He mentioned in his interview that WF coverage was conducive to passing but I’m just trying to figure out if this was a fluke game or did the light come on?

Congrats to him

He has definitely played better this year. I was down after the first game on his RPO abilities or as some also called it the zone read. At the end of the day it was his timing in making decisions and mobility but imo he is or has been working to correct that and has looked fantastic. Made some great throws and timely runs when needed. He was clutch in the 4th and OT when we had to match scores. Last year that would have been a loss no question about it.

Difference is our D wouldn’t have given them that many points last year. We had shut down corners and for some reason the exact same D-Line pressured the QB a lot more. Not sure what the issue with DLine is this year.

Well I’m comparing it to if we would have had to play that many freshmen in the secondary last year. We would not score 51. Our Dline is as good or better on paper than last year. Basically the same.

DJ has played better all year and saved our bacon yesterday. He has more accuracy and touch on the ball. Also he has ran in crucial situations to keep drives alive. Helps to have Williams and Collins. Ngata stepped up and made some plays yesterday too.

DJ is not the issue this year.

Dj had to play better than last year and he has done much better at times...nobody can cover Davis and Jake and even dj is hard pressed to overthrow them in a jump ball situation...so throw it to them until someone figures out how to stop it...Davis is a hoss!

I think a number of our receivers went and got the ball like our recievers used to do all the time.

He’s vastly improved and is getting better with each game. He played his but off yesterday. While most have been worried about our offense, I’m more concerned with our D. Where’s the pass rush? We had a few DB’s out yesterday but .. with no pass rush, we’ll get torched by any decent QB.

Dude, we DID get torched by a decent QB. Hartman will be playing on Sunday for a long time coming. Cheer up, we found a way to win. Great teams do that. We ran it and ate clock until we couldn’t stop them and then we had to try to strike and match and we did.

What is the catalyst?

Sep 25, 2022, 8:09 AM

That he knows he was bad last year?
Knows that there is a back-up that could play?
Coaching?
The much discussed 30lbs

Totally different player, even the interaction with teammates on sideline

For the record I’m not sure where the 30lbs went. The guy is a big dude!!

Yep. He is still a big dude. But last year he was too big. He ran as if he was pulling a sled. His mobility has been a big factor this year in his vast improvement. Also the Offensive line is blocking better.

There is no catalyst. He just had to learn all the reads to make, all the routes the receivers run, how to go through his progressions, footwork, etc. It's like playing piano. You have to keep practicing until you know where the notes are, how to position your fingers, and all that. It just takes time to sink in. Same thing here.

Man did he look great! So happy for him. He keeps playing like that and he could get an invite to NY. How crazy would that be after last season?!

Mikey you may like cereal but while eating you missed the point of the last year. Maybe you can look up how many injuries we had last year, including DJU himself, and listen to Dabo's post game interview yesterday.

We will know for sure when he is forced to make quicker decisions. He has come a long way though.

I think the biggest key was that he had a lot of time yesterday. OL pass blocked well so he had time to go thru progressions

Re: Did a light come on for DJ?

Sep 25, 2022, 9:43 AM

No doubt, but it's Wake's D and it won't generally be like that where he has that option. Moreover, why did it take so long so often to develop either way? Is it DJ? Schemes? The WR's route running? Their inability to get separation? It takes too long. Then again, maybe he knew he had all day and when he realizes he doesn't he will make quicker decisions.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He's been good all year......

Sep 25, 2022, 8:40 AM

and finally had WRs catch the catchable balls thrown to them.

Offense needs to build on that.

The wake game last year was our highest scoring output game sans SCState.

Let's hope they're hitting on all cylinders next week.

Maybe the light came on for Ngata. Now we just need EJ to turn his on.

Re: Did a light come on for DJ?

He’s been working hard obviously but I really think his parents divorce last year had his mind consumed. He seems to be a very family oriented guy and once he started feeling that way again at Clemson with his teammates I think his mind cleared and was ready to be in the moment. Explains a lot.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That's on our coaching staff.

Sep 25, 2022, 9:21 AM

It only took two years to figure out that what DJ can do in practice is different than what he can do during a game. The thought that he's the best we have frightens me.

You're right....

Sep 25, 2022, 10:06 AM

the new version is DJ Lite:

25 lbs lighter is not just weight loss, but a new mentality, a lot of hard work, another year of maturity, better receivers and synergy, a lotta' coaching. It means a lot of things.
