Devestation in NC.

I can't imagine how bad this is. My wife lived in east Tennessee while growing up. (Jefferson City, just west of Douglas Lake. Still has family living there.) They were spared other than heavy rains of any major effects.
I've driven though Appalachians several times. Took I-40 from Asheville to Newport and west many, many times (both ways). Been hiking in Great Smoky Mountains. Driven the length of the Blue Ridge Parkway a couple of times (Cherokee through Shenandoah NP). No way in my wildest dreams could I imagine the magnitude of devastation I'm seeing on the news, including several youtube videos.
I've been on hurricane disaster relief teams with the Southern Baptist Convention. Went to Biloxi when Katrina came through. I was on the ground in Milton, FL (panhandle, just east of Pensacola)a few years ago after a hurricane came through the panhandle of Florida. We got there 48 hours after the eye went through. I was on a team that went out and removed trees from roofs and cleared driveways so people could get their cars out of their garages.
If I were younger and physically able, I would have been in Perry, FL moving trees and clearing roofs last weekend.
I've seen flooding. I've seen roofs blown off houses. I've seen houses blown away. I've seen the St. Johns River and the Suwanee River flood. I've been without electricity for 4 or 5 days.
But, it was nothing like what I am seeing in the NC area.
Everyone affected has my prayers being lifted to God for you.

I went to Baton Rouge after Katrina to work at a shelter. They were still flying people out of New Orleans to Baton Rouge. It was terrible what those people went through. But I would say that Western North Carolina has had more wide spread damage to infrastructure. Either way both are devastating to the people going through this trial.

The Southern Baptist Convention in South Carolina had a mobile kitchen that would set up at hurricane stricken areas and serve free, hot meals 3 times a day. I was at one site and they stayed for about a week until people started complaining about not having enough variety of food. They shut it down and moved to another site. Don't know if it is still in operation but it could be very useful now.

The locals are really working hard and taking care of each other and I believe the world's kitchen organization is here.

Southern Baptists in every state do a great job with disaster relief.

In Florida, there is a team of experts on the ground as soon as it is safe (within 24 hours) to start assessing damage. They work with state, local and national officials and rank storm damage in severity. the next day volunteers start arriving to help with clean up. I was assigned to a team with 6 people. 4 of us were with the Southern Baptist Convention. We were blessed to be hooked up with 2 guys from Samaritan's Purse. Our 6 guys had two chain saws. The two guys from Samaritan's Purse were a team that worked together. One had a chain saw, the other a Bobcat. We were assigned some of the most severe damage. Spent two days getting trees off of roofs. (The guy with the Bobcat was amazing.) I was basically a mule. I pulled trees and limbs from the yard to the street. I also got on roofs and helped direct the Bobcat operator.
Florida has different counties that have different responsibilities. My county was clean up. Another County had a mobile kitchen. Another county had a mobile laundry. The crews like the one I was on slept on the floor of a gym at the local Baptist church and showered in their locker rooms. Great coordination by Florida Baptists who worked along side Salvation Army, Red Cross, Samaritan's Purse, and others.
The people we helped were extremely grateful. But, I was blessed far more than they were. Wish I was still young and strong enough to help out like I did then.

That’s what we do on the private side. I’m going to Cape Coral today to look at damages from hurricane Ian.

I went in D’Iberville outside of Biloxi volunteering during Katrina relief. Was the first time I had ever seen devastation like that in person.
This may be worse.

I went to D'Iberville about 5 weeks after Katrina with the Presbyterian Disaster Relief Assoc. and the damage a 20 ft storm surge does at the coast is unbelievable! What I've seen in NC done by streams and rivers and is equally as bad and probably more widespread. If you are able, watch for opportunities to help. Many organizations in SC are gathering supplies to take/send and could use donations of goods, time and dollars.

We had a major hurricane when we lived on St Thomas in 1995. Not a leaf left on a tree. Total devastation and cut off from the world. I really feel for those folks in NC.

You are right, and spot on. Thank you for helping raise awareness and support. Many people are still missing and likely deceased, but families need food, water, and shelter now.

A couple of friends and I have been trying to sign up for volunteer opportunities, but haven't had any luck yet. I registered with the state of NC and someone did respond today and said they were working on what is needed. No luck signing up in SC. I guess it is still early and organizations are just figuring it out. If you know of any opportunities please let me know. 5 or 6 of us are ready to mobilize. We'll sleep in our cars if necessary.

Suggestions.

Contact the largest Southern Baptist Church in your area and ask them. If you have a county Baptist Association in your county, contact them. If that doesn't work, contact the state Baptist Convention in your state.
Most organizations will require a background check. They can do it quickly, normally within a day.
If you are a member of a Southern Baptist church it should be a snap. If not, you still should be able to get assigned.
I don't know how Salvation Army works or Red Cross, but you could contact them as well.
Let me know if you have any success.

One reason you may not hear or know of volunteer opportunities is they are still assessing and beginning to communicate.
I live in Brevard NC and our town and area did not get hit as hard as West and North and East of us. First Cell service and Internet for close to Brevard downtown area came on Tuesday morning.
I think folks still don't know what they don't know
Here is the horrificness in one story .. Heard from a linemen, when he arrived in WNC (not Brevard Mountains he ran into two children looking for their parents.
Cities. Towns, Homes and families were torn apart by this hurricane and it's aftermath.

NC needs a competent governor and/or a president worth a crap.
They have neither.
Sad.

#### - get ur head out of fixed news once in a while. Both are doing wonderful and you obviously have zero clue what really happens in state and local government.
I worked south carolina epd in ops for years. Get a life if you don't think they know what they're doing. Same with fema.

Thank you for speaking up ClemGal!
The last thing anyone needs right now is to read disparaging remarks about elected officials. Times like these bring out the best in people and this is no exception.

Our elected officials are who have dropped the ball all the way from our local officials to the top,and when the problems are right there in your face why not address it 😉 These so called leaders here in Buncombe County helped right along with all this devastation. Keep building and permitting people to build where you are not supposed to.

My church sent a team to a small town between Biloxi and the LA state line. We roofed a house, put up siding and did the electrical wiring. I was in charge of the electrical stuff. We did all of that in one week, with 7 men. The devastation was nearly complete down there. Most of the beach front houses were pulled offshore when the waters started receding. Divers went in to try and find bodies...
I was highly involved with the Southern Baptist disaster relief program for several years, going through a lot of their training. Great programs!

20 inches over 44 hours here in Pisgah Forest.
As of this morning, we have all utilities back on. I have a widow maker around 70 ft. tall currently hanging to a 60 ft pine tree at 45 degrees. Avoiding that end of the house. Several others are down, but somehow missed the house.
We are 60 ft. elevation above the French Broad River, overlooking the valley. By Friday morning, the river covered the entire valley, including roads, bridges, and homes.
We are beyond fortunate. We didn't pick this home 7 years ago based on being above the valley. Honestly, we purchased it for the view.
But for the grace of God.
I went through 4 hurricanes living in Eastern NC years ago, including Fran, but the destruction around here is incomparable to anything I've ever witnessed.
My concern is: how do these places get back on their feet, when all infrastructure (roads, bridges, power, storm drainage, water and sewer) has been washed away? It will take a truly monumental effort.
