Re: Dawn Staley

Apr 4, 2022, 4:54 PM

The plight of people of color in this country is no laughing matter. 50, even 100 years, is nothing when it comes to behaviors and opinions.

Immediately following the Civil War and following the ratification of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendments, state legislatures and local governments across the South began passing laws and regulations that were blatant attempts to reverse the outcomes of the war. Local "militias" were formed, some in secret and some overtly public, that would murder not only people of color, but white Republicans who had come to the South during Reconstruction. 1000s were slain and almost none were punished.

The Jim Crow laws, the 20th century version of the KKK, the resistance to the Civil rights movements of the 60s-70s (and, frankly, even the 21st century) have left an indelible stain on our country that persists and persists.

If you think oppression is a issue of a long-passed age, think again.

Your response to a perceived level of activism (which may not even be activism) is another form of oppression. It's like saying "we didn't go to the moon" or "the Holocaust was a myth" or "Sandy Hook was a hoax."

The fact that Coach Staley is successful and is a role model for many does does not mean that Blacks/Hispanics/Asians/Middle Easterners don't daily face challenges that are not the same challenges as those that confront the rest of us.

Everybody is dealing with something - dark, problematic, or onerous be it a health issue (cancer, autoimmune, Alzheimers, chronic disease, etc.); a mental or emotional issue (autism, bipolarity, schizophrenia, learning disabilities, etc.); a lack of funds to provide for their families; homelessness; ignorance, bias, and pity.

We're living in a culture of contempt and it's not too difficult to think about how life could be better for all of us if, rather, we were living in a culture of understanding.

I’m also lost on the oppression. I never owned slaves nor has any of my black friends been slaves. They currently have every opportunity that I have but playing the victim keeps a person down regardless of what color they are. Plenty of successful black folks in this nation. If she is so worried about oppression then hopefully she is giving away a good portion of her income to those around her that are oppressed.

I worked for Robert Smith at one of his businesses

Apr 4, 2022, 6:48 PM

He was or still is the richest black guy in America worth around 7billion. He is the guy that just paid around $300mil in student loans for all the students that attended one of his speeches at his alum, I think it was Cornell.

That said, he never once discussed his oppression and he came from a fairly humble family. I have listened to him speak many times as I was upper management in one of his companies and he never once spoke about race or the oppression of blacks or minorities. He never once said he was held back or lost in a failed system.

He talked about prosperity, opportunities, growth, and playing your part in society by taking advantage of education and working in the environment of your choosing. He never once talked about racism, oppression or anything about being held back. Robert set up many internal courses, provided opportunities for continuing education and online college courses.

You hear about people being oppressed and it's just what they have been taught within their local environment. You ask successful minorities and very few would say they were under privileged, they will say they worked hard and earned it. A lot of privileged minority American's will spout that they are oppressed even though their parents multi-millionaires because they regurgitate what they hear on TV or from SM following their lame idols.

You are only oppressed in America if you allow yourself to be oppressed. Too many programs and dedicated resources to progress the minorities to the point that white middle aged men are more oppressed in the work environment than many other demographics.

Thomas Sowell, Glenn Loury, John McWhorter, Clarence Thomas, Larry Elder, and many other black American's can educate you. You clearly know how to use the internet and read, now use those abilities to educate yourself and stop letting yourself be brainwashed. Slavery wasn't racist and the Civil War wasn't about slavery. Lincoln said so himself in a letter to Horace Greeley. Everything you've been taught about Lincoln and the Civil War is a lie. It wasn't even a civil war by definition. It was in fact the second American Revolution. Go read some Thomas Sowell books and educate yourself.

Re:D.Staley: Nothing as self-destructive as victim culture

Apr 4, 2022, 6:40 PM [ in reply to Re: Dawn Staley ]

If you don't want to hear the 'nothing is as self-destructive to Blacks is when they embrace the We are the Victims culture, then study the teachings and experiences of Carol Swain.

Dr. Swain grew up in the rural south (same as did Condoleezza Rice), faced REAL racial prejudice, and applied herself to become a professor at Vanderbilt. Get off your rear and read up on some people who really know about prejudice and how to achieve great things. Stop with the 'look at me, I'm showing that I'm not a racist by my fatuous pandering' stuff. The Blacks that I know DESPISE that pandering from phony white people.

EVERYONE gets snide comments from time to time (white women = Karens / South Asians & East Asians mocked for their accents / white men = deplorables / etc.). We all know of lazy, un-motivated, entitled white people who are unsuccessful in life, yet dredge up every instance in which they had been treated poorly as 'justification' for their failures in life.

The lazy and irresponsible will always find an excuse to be miserable; their go-to excuse is that they were not treated fairly.

The terrible narrative that Americas Blacks ... since 1980 ... have been subjected to terrible prejudices is simply garbage. Will Blacks (and for that matter, Whites / APACs / S.Asians / Middle Easterners / Jews / Gays / etc) continue to be on the receiving end of occasional snide comments? Sure!

But there is no excuse for anyone to wallow in the 'their prejudiced against me' feeling as their excuse to not work hard, think hard, apply themselves, endure short-term sacrifices for long-term gain and ACHIEVE SUCCESS in today's USA.

Those who promote the '(fill in the blank victim group) are a victim, so vote for me' narrative are sociopaths who attempt to demoralize the very 'victim group' that they profess to help in the knowledge that they can profit from the misery of their target 'victim' group.

Re:D.Staley: Nothing as self-destructive as victim culture

Apr 4, 2022, 10:49 PM

I went to my 25th yr HS graduation anniversary a couple yrs ago. We are in the country in the Lowcountry of SC but had around 400 graduates. I was in College Prep and AP courses and we had many minorities in my classes. It's interesting that many of the black classmates had achieved higher education, higher social status and monetarily more wealthy. I am still friends with many of them, and I don't recall them ever having issues in school, never held back. It's actually interesting that a lot went into some type of public service like attorneys or social /mental health.

From my experience, all of my classmates that applied themselves found success and many are very successful. These are classmates born in the 70's. I think there is a wide open world available for their kids and their parents won't let them spew oppressed as an excuse.

Average incomes

Apr 4, 2022, 7:02 PM [ in reply to Re: Dawn Staley ]

The average income of Nigerian-Americans is higher than whites.

https://medium.com/@joecarleton/why-nigerian-immigrants-are-the-most-successful-ethnic-group-in-the-u-s-23a7ea5a0832

The demographic with the highest income is Indian-Americans, followed by a host of other Asian subgroups.
Asians are ranked higher than whites in almost every metric -- income, incarceration rates, graduation rates, etc.
So, it's white people suppressing everyone? ?????
Maybe the problem is the "scholars" and their "academic fragility" -- their fear of facing facts that challenge their assumptions.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But, but.....

Apr 4, 2022, 10:42 PM

That destroys the whole premise behind black folks not being more successful because someone 170 years ago was a slave.

I suppose Al Shaprton and Jesse Jackson forgot to deliver whole "America hates you because of your skin color" message when they got off the airplane?? Someone needs to tell those silly Nigerians that they're victims before it's too late!

There's a grievance industry that depends on it.

Saying that "we live in culture of contempt" due to people of a certain color is RACISM.
The "whites" that you speak of are a diverse collection of races and cultures, some with long histories of being oppressed -- That's why many tried to come here. Maybe you should study how well the Italians and Irish were treated when they entered the U.S. The KKK was against Catholics, Jews, POC, and immigrants, remember?
By the way, the word "slave" is derived from "Slav", which are white people. There was an active white slavery trade, primarily to the Middle East. Saudi Arabic outlawed slavery in 1962 due to urging by Pres. Kennedy.
You can't have a true "culture of understanding between people" until you are honest about history.
Oh, and it was conquering POC who sold other POC into slavery....
Historical facts matter.

Re: Dawn Staley

Apr 6, 2022, 9:36 AM [ in reply to Re: Dawn Staley ]

All you say is true. But I have a different perspective. Knowledge of history is very important no doubt. But it can be a ball and chain that will hold you back. You can't change history but you can do something about today and tomorrow. If you invest your time and energy wanting to be repaid for the past and not focusing on the present and future you will be mired in very slow progress.

I'm going to say a couple of things that I hope you and others won't paint me as racist because I'm not. I'm going to use the terms black, white and Latinos as only terms to save wordings.

Focusing on rights and wrongs will never fix the plight of blacks in America. Only education and family units will move the majority ahead imo. Compare what is going on today with white and Latino families today compared to blacks. Blacks depend on government to take care of them and government gives them just enough to keep them as a voting block. Their education is not improving. They are moved along in secondary education and given special entrance into post secondary education as well. Teachers in poor neighborhoods are not qualified like they need to be imo. Formation of black families has been declining. Abortions of black babies has accelerated and held back black population growth. Latinos have strong family ties. Latinos do not approve of abortion and they now exceed that of Blacks in our population. Latinos now exceed Blacks in entering post secondary education. Go to the U S Education Dept and look at the stats. Black unemployment exceeds Latino unemployment and that doesn't include the millions of Latinos working that aren't citizens.

Now I could go on but this is best I can do in limited space. My point is until black leadership can bring the family units together and improve education and schools nothing much is going to change for Blacks in America. It's a hard road and I don't see where the black leadership is going to come from. It's not going to come from those that lead by protesting the past and making white people feel ashamed of the past. Only when that ball and chain of the past is cast off and leaders develop the way forward will it ever improve. Anyway that's just the opinion of a 78 year old white guy.

Have a blessed day ya'll

Wasn't it Trump who said....and the Staley brand...

Apr 5, 2022, 2:13 AM

Wasn't it Trump who said there's no such thing as bad publicity?

Staley knew when she wore that $4800 jacket yesterday it was going to generate tons of chatter on message boards around the country and the world. And most of it would be negative. Do you think she cared? Flip no - that was her goal. Her brand got a huge boost yesterday - many people today know more about Staley than yesterday. Her brand shot up immensely - the cost of that coat is cheap compared to how much free publicity she got.

To be honest, I knew very little about her. I wikipedia'd her and oh my goodness- what a resume. Starting in high school she's been on the national scene as a player and coach including the Olympics.

She does come from humble beginnings in the Philadelphia projects. This thread started with someone asking how she has been oppressed? Shouldn't the question be how did you become a success in this country? And if there were a lot of hurdles along the way, she is probably the best qualified around to address them...even if most don't like her way of attracting attention to them. And then we're back to the same thing as the coat...bad publicity is better than no publicity. And it's free.
