Don't leave the ACC

May 20, 2012, 9:11 PM

We would be better off to be the Bass in a Perch pond rather than a Bass in a pond full of other Bass. Our chances of winning a conference with OK, OK ST, Texas, WVU, etc. would be a lot less than our current situation. Winning a BCS bowl game is the same no matter which conference we are in. AND, if we go undefeated while starting the season with Auburn/UGA and finishing with USuck we would absolutely be in the top 4 in the BCS standings with shot of winning a NC. We would be able to compete in the Big 12, but we could dominate the ACC which to me is better. I will leave with 3 points.

1. We won the NC while in the ACC. And, it was only an 8 team conference then.

2. Undefeated is Undefeated no matter what conference you're in. It will just be easier in the ACC.

3. Swofford is the main reason everyone wants to go. If we move it would be like treating a splinter in your foot by cutting off the leg. He will be gone soon enough. We should just weather the storm.

Sorry...but....

May 20, 2012, 9:13 PM

1. Times have changed...Apples and oranges.

2. Wrong...ask Auburn and others.

3. TV money and keeping up with our competition...look at USC.

1. Times have changed. Football programs need money to keep up in the coaching salary and facilities arms race. That money comes from the conference TV contract, and the ACC is WAY behind the major 4 conferences in that.

2. Even if Clemson went undefeated in the ACC, they'd lose to SC most years because they're getting SEC money to build their program.

3. Swofford is a big reason, but the biggest is the poor TV contract. I don't think there is any way it can be fixed because it's caused by the ACC having so many dead weight football programs that get low ratings on TV.

Others will go and with what would be left in the ACC

Boise ST says Hi.

Give This Junk a Rest

May 20, 2012, 9:19 PM

Dude, this ain't the 80s. The majority of revenue back then was from boosters and home games. Clemson could thrive in any league back then because of those factors. Now a large chunk of the purse comes from TV, and Clemson will not get it in the ACC. And with all the media now compared to back then talking constantly about strength of schedule we'd be locked out. None of the major teams from the power conferences would schedule us because they will not need to increase their SOS. All they will have to do is win their conference and they're in. Forget about the outdated Bobby Bowden thinking about easier paths. It's time for CU to man up play and win with the big boys.

Being able to compete is where we are at now. If we get ahead......so be it.

Have you been paying attention AT ALL???????

May 20, 2012, 9:23 PM

Facepalm.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

A little naive

May 20, 2012, 9:25 PM

The college football world was different in the 80's. Today you can go undefeated and still not play for the MNC. Just ask Boise St. about that one. Also, with a playoff it would be possible to lose in the regular season and still win your way to the championship. Finally, the bottom line is that it takes money to build a winning program. If SCU and UGA are outspending us by 20 million + per year, then there is zero chance that Clemson will ever be more than everyone's favorite homecoming opponent.

Darling, you're very mis-informed or stupid.

May 20, 2012, 9:33 PM

Darling, this is not about Fish. This is about money! I'm sorry, but you dont even understand what is propelling all of these changes. You are arguement shows your very much lack of understanding of today's college football.

Lets take this scenario: FSU bolts to Big 12. Per ACC's agreement with ESPN, both parties have the right to renegotiate if a member leaves. Our small 17M (compared to an expected 30M for SEC teams) could go to 12M per year. In other words, our arch rival would receive 2.5 times the money we currently get. How do we keep up with facilites, coaches, and overall Clemson brand with that type of deficite?

The ACC has no chance to get into the Championship game due to only teams from the 4 super conferences would via for it annually. Therefore, Clemson could no longer get 5 star recruits any longer. They want to play on teams that get TV exposure. We would no longer get this time on the tube.

Basically, your whole arguement is stupid!

this will mess up recuiting big time.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Assuming we have regional dance partners...

May 21, 2012, 8:50 AM

(e.g., FSU, GT, etc.), recruiting should not suffer. I remember reading a survey in ESPN the Magazine (wish I had the actual data, but I was at the barber and chose not to steal the magazine for posterity) wherein potential recruits were asked whether conference affiliation had any impact on their college choice - the overwhelming majority said no.

Having said that, my only concern would be the ability to recruit the upper Mid-Atlantic states (NC to MD/DC, assuming nobody from those states came along). But, SCAR seems to recruit those areas pretty well, with no SEC representation in those states, so...

Incidentally, if the Big XII gets major ACC defections and is able to build a strong eastern half this is all moot - the Big XII would bear little difference to the SEC in terms of footprint and geographical distribution. Again, does the large SEC footprint hurt SCAR? The answer is no.

May 21, 2012, 9:40 AM [ in reply to Darling, you're very mis-informed or stupid. ]

How do you explain Oklahoma State being undefeated last year, being a member of the Big 12 and being locked out of the National Championship game. We don't know how the decisions are going to be made and bolting before those decisions are made could bite us in the backside. Florida State, Miami, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and Clemson are all well respected teams and create a good conference. If there will only be 4 conferences that are allowed to play in the NC playoff then we need to seek another conference but how do we know that is a done deal? There has been a boat load of speculation on here but I haven't seen much to say how the playoff system will work. People think that the SEC, PAC 12, Big 12 and Big 10 will dominate but I haven't seen anything to tell me that has been decided. We don't have a good TV contract with ESPN right now but if the Big 12 gets to renegotiate because they added teams will the ACC not be given the same courtesy?

May 21, 2012, 9:04 AM

athletics. Staying in the ACC is like putting yourself on a life support system, then asking the nurse to pull the plug. And your angst is misdirected....Swofford is the only person to blame for this, not our fans, not our AD, not our administration.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

By that logic, leave the ACC for SoCoN

May 21, 2012, 9:11 AM

And as everyone else has pointed out the other points are not logical.
1. College landscape was completely different then, and now you can be left out of a chance to win the MNC.
2. Tell that to the Sunbelt, MWC, or any other conference not the SEC
3. Wrong, its about $$$, the people who decide to go are professionals involved with the university. Not fans on an internet message board.

And in the wings, I hear Kate Smith warming up.

Personally, I'd rather stay put, a big bass in the perch pond, as you eloquently put it.

But it seems the big ol' bait bucket won't be coming around to this pond much longer. Unless we want to feed of whatever crickets and grubs might wander into the water, we may well have to hop through the ### breach and swim downstream.
