Dabo's Love of Walk-Ons Makes Sense

in a few ways:
1) He like to give hard-working players who have dreams a chance to succeed.
2) He recognizes that unheralded players who try very hard to compete are inspirational to others and can be a great example of hard work for scholarship athletes.
3) Although he hasn't yet had to yank a scholarship awarded to a former walk-on, the existence of a few walk-ons on the team allow him to keep his promise to the scholarship recruits so they can remain on scholarship, no matter what - so long as they abide by the rules and conduct themselves according to expectations. The up-front stipulation that walk-on scholarships are year-to-year with no guarantees gives Dabo a cushion of a few players who can be dropped from scholarship if necessary to meet the maximum number without breaking his word to scholarship recruits. He doesn't want to remove a benefit from any of the players, but this way the damage is controlled and his reputation among the players is protected.
Some may criticize his awarding scholarships to players who are not highly recruited, along with coaches sons, etc., but his method seems extremely smart strategically, so long as there is enough underlying talent to field a competitive team without the walk-ons.

I don't disagree at all with what you say. I'd say that Dabo and our program are the exception to the rule when it comes to college FB coaches.

always seemed well under the 85 limit with recruited players. I recall looking at the numbers and wondering if it was part of the reason we couldn't win the ACC.
I think its a lot harder these days to manage the roster. I think Dabo does an outstanding job given the new challenges.

told the next day he may lose his scholarship. Most players would transfer...Maybe, Dabo told him something different in their interview.

We were only over by 3 scholarships and have 4 walk-ons on scholarships. Helms was never going to lose his scholarship.

Totally agree with what you say re: Dabo and walk-ons. The reasons are crystal clear as to why he is so fond of them. However, the devil is in the details when it comes to their talent. If some of these midgets do not have the physical talent to play at the D1 level, then it doesn't matter how hard they work, they shouldn't be on scholly. The #3 RB this year is a great example. That dude has the ability to play for anybody and his hard work "should" get him a scholly. He deserved it! He could start at a lot of schools. The dwarfs and coaches kids that do not have the talent to play at this level should never be given schollies, I don't care how hard they work. It hurts the overall team performance. That's my 2 cents.

Aside from that, walk-ons are also used to...

boost team academic metrics and graduation rates. Been a common practice for a long time.

He Is A Walk On. "In His Eyes"!

He has the walk on chip on his shoulders all the time. Note: that doensn't have to be seen as a negative or angry thing. It motivates him and is the fuel that assist to fuel him(along with other things).
So, I imagine as he is seeing these kids come out for a major program with dreams of getting on the field, "he see's himself in them frequently"!
Helms is our 2nd string QB and likely will play a ton this year; due to the Tigers blowing people out. He won't lose his scholarship and the plan was never for him to lose his.
Don't forget the portal has taken players who gave up their scholarship. The coaches likely also know other players who are leaning that way!
If not, those conversations happen prior to the HC administering them the scholarship, "that it's not a permanent deal"!
For me; "as long as it is known up front what I am signing up for, there is no problem"!
I think Dabo's faith gets him some negative pub about this; because to some: "it isn't Christian-like"! People like to nit-pick if you proclaim certain things; and that is one of them. Nobody said you're perfect as a Christian; you're just forgiven. Yet, prone to make mistakes like anybody else. People need to get over it. The walk on he's had the conversation with - will still try and be on the team. They will still do what makes them happy in terms of Clemson football. And, Dabo will support them on scholarship or not!

Walk-Ons Make Sense - Cannon fodder is still needed
Apr 25, 2023, 1:03 AM

HR is the very rare exception everybody always points to. We won't see another HR for a generation.
That said.. walk-on's are still needed as cannon fodder. Yes, these guys are needed in practice and they boost the academic measurements, but they are also needed to finish in mop up games. These guys play a pretty important role in the gimme games to prevent injury to the scholarship guys, and also in the games that get out of control one way or the other.
Also, it is plain and simple a perk of coaching. I don't know of many dads who don't leverage their position to advance their kids. I don't begrudge the Swinney boys. Good for them. Plus, Will never ever muffed a snap. Not bad.
