Can Dabo still have some success every now and then? Yea, sure. Paul had a slightly better than average team every few years. And his teams were almost always a tough out.
But they never had a real chance to be competitive at the highest level because he never embraced change.
Dabo ain’t gotta go wholesale into the portal world. But he’s got to drop this old way of thinking.

Will Heldt, Jeremiah Alexander, and Tristan Smith are all slam dunk portal additions by Dabo and staff.
Problem is (except for Heldt) they aren't seeing the field near as much as they should.

They had high hopes and expectations based on the credentials that Clemson had. I feel sorry for Heldt and Smith...because this is their last go around. Not sure about Alexander...but it might be his last go around with us too....for they all were lured to come into disaster.
The Alexander and Smith don't see the field much because its either they don't quite know all the plays and nuances the others do.....or Dabo don't want to feel guilty that a player can come in out of nowhere and actually be better than a guy he has shown a great amount of favor to for years. Heldt is in because we were short and very inexperienced at his position.

He's currently a junior. Technically could come back next year, but if he keeps playing like he has, I suspect the NFL is where he's headed next fall.

As someone who thought the old way would work, and really wanted to believe that, the portal absolutely is the way. In combination with recruiting and coaching also, obviously, you can get a couple guys and think its going to make a team. Perfect example: the Virginia RB that came from NC Central. He would absolutely be starting right now at RB. I believe Davidson and EZ are going to be pretty good, but they clearly aren't good enough today. Maybe its blocking, IDK. But Alexander and Tristan Smith dont even see the field. Using their names as a portal example is silly. Missouri to me looked like a team that didn't have one player other than the RB Hardy that was better than what we have, yet their team looked WAY better. They get the most out of their players, thats for sure. Well coached too.

Paul Johnson had 2 seasons with more than 9 wins in 11 years at GT and finished ranked 3 times total. Dabo has finished with more than 9 wins 4 of the last 5 seasons and ranked every year. Your analogy is peak stupid.

Sounds like poster is stating Paul Johnson's teams could compete any given week but had a ceiling. This analogy holds up if we're talking about any HC who limits his team by not utilizing portal transfers.

It doesn’t and I’ve given explicit data showing so. If he’s forecasting that would be another thing, but he’s not.

Lack of statistical reasoning correlates heavily with average and below iqs. So does posting on sports messages boards. I know which I, guilty of and whether or not it is an outlier behavior.

For the casual fan, CPJ triple option would seem outdated and the problem with GT football but that was not the case. The issue was two fold. One was the fact that GT refused to invest in the program. At the time, Clemson just opened the new football facility and the IPF plus had 40ish staffers, all following Saban’s lead. GT had invested zero in facilities and their nine position coaches were trying to coach and compete against Clemson’s army of staff and coaches. I am working from memory but if you search, I am 98% confident. The second issue at the time, was GT did not have a major which did not require two units of calculus plus other requirements like statistical analysis. The triple option would have worked great as no one spent any time practicing against it, except the players who could run it could not pass high level math.

Also in the final part of Paul Johnson's GT career, after all the whining about cut blocking they made changes which limited blocking schemes. Which is BS as there is no evidence that cut blocking from GT or any of the academies caused more injuries than other blocking.
I can only imagine if Johnson had the same level of GT admin and funding support that Key is getting now. Thankfully the current GT president who joined a few years ago recognizes the value of athletics.

Actually I think if Paul Johnson could ever recruit bama type players they would have won a NC. That offense with elite play makers all over the field could be deadly. PJ fell of due to recruiting not his offense.

As usual J… you’re right on the money.
Big time recruits didn’t want to play in that offense bc it wasn’t conducive to being a high NFL draft pick.
Smaller OL with a QB that couldn’t throw anything but a deep jump ball in an offense that literally featured a fullback which is a dying position.
As you said J… if he could have recruited 4 and 5 star players he would have won huge but that’s the problem. 4 and 5 star recruits wanted very little to do with that offense.
Not every time but most of the time when GT got matched up against a big physical team with loads of talent on both lines of scrimmage… they got smoked.
