Dabo and the portal. This might be an example of good guys

finish last. Most people do not realize that football scholarships are renewable annually. A signee is not guaranteed a full four years. However, Dabo tells recruits and their parents, “if you commit, obey our rules, and constantly continue to improve yourself, you will not lose your scholarship. We want to give you an opportunity to excel but mainly to get you a college degree.”
At the current schools that have had instant success with the portal, Colorado, FSU, Miami, GA to a lesser degree, does the head coach tell recruits, “we really want you, otherwise we would not be offering you a scholarship. However, though you might have a good year as a freshman and show a lot of potential in the future, there’s a guy in the portal who has proven to be better than you so we will not be renewing your scholarship.

It is. But in this situation, being the “good guy” doesn’t really hold value. This is a cutthroat industry and has become even more cutthroat at the urging of the players themselves. I’m not going to cry any tears for people who want to get paid (at times large sums), but then complain about the side effects of that decision.
As far as the coaches are concerned, they also made this mess. Dabo had no problem expanding his income and lifestyle to epic proportions, but then complains that he is held to a high standard.
As for the other schools they’ve used the portal to fill holes. UGA lost four receivers to the draft. You can’t replace that with a 17/18 year old and expect to be successful. Especially since they may be defended by a 22/23 year old. But what you do is tell that kid out HS, we really want you but you will be sitting behind this guy from the portal while you develop. And if you’re winning they’ll buy in. If not they’ll go elsewhere.
You also hire the best coaches you can afford to develop these guys not your second cousin’s hairdresser’s cross-eyes nephew.
