Seems like this has to be the new reality. We have so many veteran players that are not regular contributors. Here's a list with the year they are entering in 2026:
RB - Jarvis Green, 4th year OL - Ian Reed, 4th year OL - Watson Young, 3rd year DE - Markus Dixon, 4th year DL - Caden Story, 5th year DT - Hevin Brown-Shuler, 3rd year LB - Dee Crayton, 4th year CB - Myles Oliver, 5th year LB - CJ Kubah-Taylor, 3rd year S - Kylon Griffin, 5th year S - Rob Billings, 4th year S - Kylen Webb, 4th year K - Robert Gunn, 5th year
Imagine bringing in 13 transfers to replace them that can actually compete for 1st or 2nd string spots.

If you want to motivate players, then tell them the bottom 10 (or 15) performers will be let go. That also means attitude, legal issues, academics, enthusiasm will also count in their evaluation. I think there is too much complacency among the players and the coaching staff has a lot to do with it. The players see the coaches being held unaccountable. They are not stupid.

I see you making these types of posts frequently. Basically, any time someone has a criticism, you respond "you aren't on the coaching staff so what's the point of making the criticism"
This is a bizarre take. Of course no one on a message board affects coaching decisions. But isn't the point of a message board for a team to post thoughts, positive or negative, about the team? What exactly do you want people to do? Is "be a fan" just code for only post positive, supportive thoughts?
Instead of either moving on with your life or posting substantive points in disagreement, your tactic is going out of your way to tell people their thoughts don't matter because it affects nothing. Just move on or say you disagree. Saying other people dont matter is an equal waste of time to the posts you comment under, ironically.

That's a valid question but other teams are signing 10-20 players a year from the portal. So the kids must know what they are walking into, or more likely they think it is a better situation and they will just go somewhere else if they are not happy in a year.
I know Dabo hates the thought of a revolving door. It goes against all he tries to impart to these players. But, unless we are going to recruit in the top 5 every year like Bama, UGA, Oregon, or Ohio State, we must be willing to bring in 10-20 guys a year IMO.

Portal players leaving after a year if it doesn’t work out. Now a staff has to not only weigh current player vs portal player, but has to weigh current player potential vs portal player longevity. Does our current guy have the potential to be better in 2 years than the revolving unknown.
Again, I don’t know, but it’s certainly no as easy on a staff as you’d think.

If Oregon, UGA, Ohio State, and every other top team plus all those other P4 programs currently kicking our ##### us can manage their rosters in this NIL world, then why can't our coaches?
If they can't, then find ones who can. Our staff is ridiculously over-paid for this current product.

Ohio State, UGA, Bama and Oregon have been consistently in the top 10 in recruiting since 2020. Meanwhile, Florida has also been up there and yet ... just fired their HC.
Point is, portal/roster management is probably quite a bit more nuanced and complex than the "go big" portal theory you seem to espouse. I think Mike Norvell would agree. As would Napier. And, depending on how it shakes out for him the rest of this season and next season, Joey McGuire.

The last time I offered to break down film with a poster, he quit, and wasted my valuable time. The irrefutable fact is we had our largest portal class in history this year, and it coincides with our worst season (to date) in years. If you’d like to pick out bright spots, like Heldt’s play, I’d caution you. Dabo has taken a beating here by posters for doing the same thing. It boils down to wins and losses. We are losing right now. Save the sunshine bright spot orange colored glasses view for a poster who has his head in the sand, but that’s not me.

I mean it's a down year and I'm not running thinking the sky is falling like others are. I also don't attribute our struggles solely to portal usage (or non-usage). However, the portal is simply a tool that others are using that we are not at remotely using the same level. It's not going to go away anytime soon, and you either adapt or die.
Your point was that this was the most we've used the portal, and it's our worst year recently. But that is classic correlation and not causation. Look at the stats, watch the game, or reach analyses, whatever you want to do, and there is no way its is legitimately arguable the players we picked up in the portal are the cause of our struggles this year. That's what i disagree with you on.

This right here goes along with the philosophy change I would like to see Dabo put into place. So when I talked about major changes, this is part of that.
Almost every school out there processes players. They don’t use the word cut or whatever. They just highly recommend that they transfer. Probably even help them get a soft landing spot.
This is why I don’t think Dabo will ever make the required changes needed to get back to the top. Can we honestly see him process players? This has been a recruiting pitch for years. Until graduation do we part. He has said it 1 million times. If they miss evaluate a player it’s their fault. So they keep them regardless. Wow that’s all fine and dandy when we’re good. Not so much when we’re bad. Also, the crappy players didn’t matter as much when we could stack talent. We had tons of depth during our run.

But I also don’t see any other way we legitimately compete for championships without doing so.

Scholarships are one year renewable contracts. Why should Clemson be locked into a 4-5 year contract, regardless of how a player is doing, while the player can leave anytime he wants?
We have to protect Clemson, and sometimes that might mean letting a guy go. It isn’t easy, but it’s not like we are telling him that he can’t get a college degree. He can - he will just need to transfer elsewhere as a student-athlete or quit football and be a regular student like everyone else.
Some people seem to equate Clemson deciding not to renew a scholarship with us preventing that person from playing football or getting a college degree. We aren’t his only option for those things.

If you don’t perform to a certain standard in the classroom, you’re kicked out of school. By extension, if you aren’t performing to a certain standard on the football field, you’re off the team.
If Dabo really wants to prepare these guys for life, teaching them that they have to perform or else they might lose their job is excellent preparation for the future.

Dabo can help them find a great program to transfer to as well. Like when your company has to let you go, but assists you in finding employment elsewhere.

But if Brownell caused the kind of decline Dabo has over the last five years he wouldn’t have a job.

Brownell's been consistently average without teetering entirely into tire fire for 15 years, and at Clemson, in basketball, that's good enough. Thank you for validating my initial post.

It's just NFL light at this point. I never thought I would lose interest in College football but that is what has happened with NIL.

Maybe a good start is being “all-in” and recruiting at an elite level for top ranked high school kids. Not good…Elite. If you have chosen not to be elite at portal, why are we not being elite at high school recruiting?
Maybe offer just a few more kids (doesn’t have to be 400, but certainly more than 65 or 70 ) so that you give yourself more margin for error so you’re not always scrambling at the end of the cycle when a top target, the only one you have offered, has chosen some other school. I mean …that that’s like common sense right????
Maybe instead of paying third string guys who hardly play $400,000, use some of that money for the five star kid you really need. While it is admirable to take care of a kid who has done everything you have asked him but hasn’t contributed much, we can’t afford to let that impact our ability to sign more different makers.
Roster management, resource management and money management.

the possibilities of a significantly larger TP class from a positive & realistic perspective. The problem is change here occurs in small increments, at a snail's pace and requires everything just short of a court order to force the hand of the 2x Nat'l Champion HC that led Clemson to 6 consecutive CFP appearances, 7 in total. This significant change in approach to TP acquisitions while warranted would be out of character and highly unlikely. The changes(staff, TP philosophy, etc)made over the last 4-5 years have been largely involuntary which is why we are in for a slow bleed, unfortunately. Knowing/believing this, still couldn't support firing him not yet maybe a year or 2 down the road-

Is it cutting players or cutting employees (many with degrees)?

Are these guys working diligently towards degrees and training & working hard on the field and weight room? If yes, there is at least an argument they deserve not to be cut within 5 yrs. If they are not contributing, working hard, advancing towards a degree, or have already achieved a degree, Clemson has met its obligations.
It's not a cut at that point; it's a parting of ways LeonTrotsky

Agree. If players and agents are gonna make it a business, coaches and admin. have to start operating it like one. Feel bad for these guys because before the game was ruined they could do their duty on the scout team, get their degree for free and enter the workforce. Everybody loses with this new model except agents and 5 star egos. 98% of whose production will never match their bank account (Clubnik, Parker, etc)

With the additional scholarship allowances you don't have to "cut players". Just eliminate any NIL opportunities for them but allow them to remain on team if they choose to.

Just curious ..... how many teams do you know of that have players who in your words "do not contribute". I suspect that you know scout team players also contribute ...... and most portal players are not looking for places to go to be back ups.

My take is the top teams including Ohio State, UGA and Bama do not have a large "second tier" of walk-ons and walk-ons-given-scholarships (e.g. Dabo Swinney at Bama).
The back-ups and practice players at these schools are true freshman & injured redshirts who are seeking to play NFL ball and a handful of legacy players whose fathers played for their schools. It is remarkable what Dabo, BV, and star players accomplished from 2011-2020 with such a chasm in talent between Tiger starters and backups.
Talented FBS and Div. II players and portal transfers are seeking to compete in the big time FBS level. There are no promises. They have to compete.

existing walk-ons are being grandfathered out and there are no new ones. ncaa says all players must be on scholarship. it went from 88 scholarships to 105. It doesn't matter if you pay your own way to school and want to see if you can be developed, no dice. you have to be a scholarship player.

We are going to have to do more than cut a few players.. We need to get the portal players that the best teams are getting not just any portal players. We took Alexander out of the portal but it pretty clear why he sat the bench at Bama. If we are getting back on top we will have to outbid some of the richest schools in the country and that will not be easy. The one thing we need to do is compete for the top HS tallent and pay them whether Dabo likes it or not. I had hoped his philosophy would work this year and prove the other schools wrong but that did not work out to well for us. If you are going to get the best tallent we are going to have to tamper like it or not.

My understanding is that scholarship players never get cut for not being as good as the coaches thought they would be. They just end up as backups to backups. To get cut you have to do something really wrong....like point out the nepotism problem with the coaching staff or something.

And possibly ruining their chances to get their degree? That’s pretty evil right there. Just to win a football game. That’s the dilemma for Dabo. I’ll tell ya right now, he won’t do it. He’ll quit before he lies to these kids like that. I would too.

This is never going to happen while Dabo is our coach. I am not sure that is a bad thing. Winning at any cost is not worth it.
