Louisville qb

Do you think it would be a good idea to have Trenton Simpson spy the qb this game, or is the qb to fast for Simpson to lock down?

I just commented on another post the same thing. They need to have him or Barrett Carter spying him the whole game. As well as the ends taking out the edge. Then TD, Breese, RO, need to lock down the middle and not let a running back get one inch the entire game.

Most NFL and college teams have stopped using a spy as a way to stop rushing QBs, especially when using one player in particular. They are easily picked up by lead blockers, can be picked by a crossing wr, out ran to the corner, and a few other options to make them a nonfactor. Also using one of your best players in Simpson as spy on every play, would be to make him a nonfactor on 80% of the plays (non-qb rushing plays) and have you playing 11-10 on defense. As a scheme idea it also invites Cunningham into the second level of the defense, as that is where they are counting on the help coming from, so if Simpson was to get picked up or miss the tackle it would be trouble.
Most teams now try to contain the pocket, fill gaps, and play lots of zone so the defense has an eye on the QB at all times.

That being said there are still situations to use a spy, but it's not a base defense or something to use on every third down. They are still every effective in shutting down the QB run or clean up a blitz, but if the offense expects it, it is kinda easy to scheme against.

The DE's will have to play containment and not run around him on the pass rush. You play him just like we use to Lamar Jackson, it's all about containment and collapsing the pocket on him.

Watched some of replay of J, Madison VS Cards snd JM had some one in Malik’s face on every play, they kept his running game in check and pressured his padding. Most of their success came against just hanging off to the running back. Got to have someone in his face every down.
