a hunter near where I live on Lake Greenwood who walked up on 10 coyotes feasting on a deer and 3 of them charged toward him (lucky he wasn't just some person walking along without a gun to scare them away). Also , the same article reported that the nationally shown video of the man grabbing the coyote that got into his backyard and was attacking his dog, and putting it in a dumpster. I didn't realize that this happened in SC too or that the coyote did test positive for rabies. This will make me think differently when I hear them howl near me when I am in the deer woods next Fall - maybe some night hunting for them in the meantime will help. The article says the deer population has dropped 30% in the state in the last 22 years mainly due to coyotes eating the fawns.

Incorrect. There is no bounty. SCDNR releases a number of tagged coyotes each year. If you harvest one you can turn in the tag for a reward. There is no $75 bounty.

I think the article says they trap and release 4 per year in each game zone. Might be worth stopping to check road kill for tags - don't see many hit by cars .

at times when other seasons don't put you into the woods. They neuter them before release so they don't multiply further.

Probably studying habits and movements. Sounds like they are trapping them then tagging and releasing. Not adding more.

Said they have tagged 112 in the last 7 years and just under half have been reported taken. So there could be as many as 60 or so running around with tags.

Know anyone with a lot of land right on the NC border named Plyler (not Mickey)? My dad and brother had permission to hunt there years ago. One field was partly in each state and my brother didn't even know which state he shot a deer in.

one on the table. I usually get 1 or 2 each deer season - got 4 the same morning a couple of years back - so close to Saluda town limit that I could hear (loud)people talking in town.

Population of SC deer has decreased from around 1.2 million to around 800,000 since the 1990s. A study performed at SRS a few years ago by the Ecology Lab found that of about 30 fawns that were tagged at birth, none survived. Collars were found later. Predation accounted for all the kills. Then heavy trapping was performed in the same area sometime later and predation on tagged fawns fell below 50%.
January and February are legal trapping times. SC has now allowed night hunting of coyotes on registered land. I suggest using those legal methods to reduce their concentration in your area.

I’ve quit taking does. It seems the only thing to stabilize the population is increasing the number of fawns. Coyote control has not been effective yet. It works in some isolated areas of heavy trapping and night hunting but others move in to take their place quickly. Unless it is state wide including urban areas, it’s a losing battle. Remember these are invasive animals that were brought into this area by humans.

I'm in the suburbs just outside of Atlanta and there's been at least one pack of coyotes in our neighborhood recently. We don't have any outdoor pets so it's not really an issue, but we sure hear them howling every now and then.

Unfortunately for us, SCDNR looked the other way when owners of fox pens started bringing coyotes in to their fenced areas so deer dogs could be trained and kept in shape for hunting season. And, of course, many escaped and started breeding. We now have a major problem on our hands that has no solution. They have been trying to rid themselves of coyotes in the mid west for years with little success. We are stuck with them and they are very harmful to nearly all wildlife. There are a lot of them where I live and the deer, turkey, and rabbit population has suffered because of it.

I’d be up for some coyote hunting. I probably don’t have the right weapon for it but it might be an excuse to buy some new toys.
Saw a post the other day from a guy that said last year when he was turkey hunting he never saw a turkey but had coyotes come in to his turkey call every time.

turkey hunting and thought it might be a turkey so I didn't move so I wouldn't scare it. It was getting so close that I got nervous and rolled over and swung the shotgun around - it was a coyote about 10 feet behind me - don't know if I was more shocked or he was. Darn thing ran away with a tree trunk perfectly positioned so I couldn't get a shot. I wasn't even calling turkeys at that point, he was just passing by and had no idea I was there.

I had one come up behind me when I lived in PA. There were always chipmunks playing around behind that stand and I thought that’s what it was so I didn’t immediately turn around. Then he walked right under the stand and directly away from me. I had a crossbow but didn’t shoot because it would have been straight on at his backside. Had another one on that property one time that came in walking on downed logs and didn’t make a sound until he was about 20 yards away. Was waiting for him to clear a tree to get a shot and as soon as his head cleared the tree he saw me and ran off. Had a crossbow that time too and by the time he stopped he was well out of range.

and since the previous owner passed away. I need to find out the new owner name to get it done. I have a thermal scope on an AR -15 .308 so I can take down hogs easier. Need some kind of predator call like a rabbit in distress to get them in - don't think I could call them in with howls or yips without electronics.

The only thing I have in a semi-auto is a .22 with open sights. I didn’t get a shot at those 2 I saw at the end of the season this year because I couldn’t get the scope on them quick enough. If I had open sights I might have gotten a shot at the one I saw at Pacolet. He was the biggest one I’ve ever seen.

also, the SCDNR actually encourages hunters to take Coyotes when there is opportunity because of their overpopulation and detriment to deer numbers!!(as well as other wildlife)

I say blast every one that you see, and if you believe they are on your land, set traps for them and shoot them when you trap them. Most wild animals that can harm a human, they will try and stay away from us, but not wolves or coyotes bc they are animals that love killing, it's been their M O since their beginning...

Currently culling 160 deer out of Tega Cay all on the golf course at night. Must figure a lot of them end up there at night. Guys are sharp shooters with night vision. Cost $94,000. What a gig if you could get it. They had to do something and it should have been done years ago. They are literally all over the place. Never seen that many grey looking deer, which I’m assuming is their age. Need a management system but too many tree huggers over there that don’t understand the need in thinning the herd for the overall health of the deer. As much as I play out there I have never seen a coyote. Guys at work see a coyote it’s dead and pigs. They are currently biotching about the growing pig population.

Kill the hogs and take them down to the homeless shelter, they will be glad that you did. One feral hog will help feed about 30-35 people at the shelter...

Pigs are definitely worse. They destroy the vegetation and it runs pretty much everything else off. I used to hunt near Clinton and that property got so overrun with pigs I went and found somewhere else to hunt. Not to mention they can be aggressive. I was hunting one day there and a guy went beyond where i was before daylight headed to his stand and ran into a sow with piglets and she wouldn’t let him past. He waited a little while til it got light enough to see well and shot her. They were all over that property and I didn’t see any deer the last 2 years I hunted there. Was seeing a lot of deer there in previous years.

SCDNR were actually part of the problem as I posted above. It's water under the bridge now and they are calling for help from the ones they harmed. I'm a supporter of SCDNR but they dropped the ball on this one mightily.

I don't hunt anymore, and haven't hunted for many years, but if you wanted to thin the deer out, wouldn't a better idea be, to extend the hunting season, and issue more doe tags? After reading some of the messages above, it's obvious, I haven't been in the loop for a long time. I always thought it was a very bad idea to bring in a predator like coyotes. There has never been any documentation affirming wolves hunting and killing humans, but there's evidence that coyotes have, and will hunt children.

the claim that SCDNR brought any into the state and I believe that - they worked hard to move deer from the Lowcountry to the Upstate to expand hunting opportunities to do that. They did, however, clip wings of geese so they would have offspring that would never acquire the tendency to migrate back to Canada, and for that they deserve a lawsuit for letting all those nasty birds to over populate here.

I play a lot of golf and geese are most definitely a menace. Shizz everywhere and about eat all the grass on one fairway on a local course I used to pIay. I do like going to different courses and seeing what they are doing around their ponds to discourage them from staying.

We live in a neighborhood with lots of home in Lake Wylie and we currently have a coyote roaming the hood. 8 year old daughter came running in the house two days ago saying it crossed the street in front of her while she was on her bike. Guess this thing happens when they have no where to go but it’s dang scary

about that one around children your daughter's age and would try to take him out if possible. I have shot foxes in my neighborhood after they were seen catching cats, They looked diseased and didn't act too scared of people although they would run away ( but not always out of shotgun range.)

Saw the other day about a Great Pyrenees guarding his flock in Georgia taking on 10 at one time. The dog killed 8 before his owner showed up and ran the other 2 off. The dog was mauled pretty good and lost his tail also. Good news the dog recovered completely and resumed his duties.

I once saw a herd of cows run to the middle of a pasture and form a huddle like I have seen buffalo(bison) do on TV. They then stampeded down the hill in a tight group toward a coyote that was lucky enough to realize that running was his only chance of survival.

Coyotes were coming whether you wanted them here or not. DNR didn't bring any in, some fox hunters did in the past, some fox hunters were prosecuted for doing so, but nevertheless they would still be here.

Just like the armadillos - they worked their way up from Florida and Georgia- First saw one near Hilton Head 25 or so years ago and now they are all around here.
