College Football Power Map

I've posted this elsewhere but thought it might make more fodder for discussion while we anxiously await more developments in conference realignment.
This is a map of all FBS football programs over the last decade. The 'dot' size is equal to football strength over the last ten seasons based on end-of-season Saragin rankings. The system is weighted for the following:
- The more recent the season, the more the weight. This is a what-have-you-done-lately for me world. A big season in 2003 is nice and counts into your score but if you've been sucking the last 5 years, it's gonna show.
- Teams not in an AQ conference are weighted less. This is to prevent, say, Boise State, from having what would otherwise be a Top 8 or so program in the country. Their success is well-deserved and they still place highly but this somewhat balances their success with not being in a power conference with that level of competition. It's based by season so TCU has likewise been weighted similarly even though they are now in the Big 12.
- Higher rankings get exponentially higher scores. It's based on a curve, not just one point more for each higher ranking. This really allows you to separate elite seasons from merely good ones or average ones. There is also a bonus modifier for winning the BCS title as it is a huge prestige booster.
I have the data in spreadsheet format as well if anybody is curious as to the specific ranking of a team.

Try adding some depth to that.... a single season snap shot doesn't cut it....

It's not a single season, it's ten years of data, compiled and weighted, as explained in the original post.
I'm not trying to force any conclusions - I'm just trying to pain a historically relevant picture of the current landscape.
It obviously does not take into account long-term historical reputation or 'TV market size' or anything like that so it's really just about what's happened on the field. You'll have to add your own weighted judgements for those other factors.

The way I see it is that we should stay unless FSU leaves, then we should consider.

Really, Clemson and GT should be in the SEC

We are both surrounded by SEC schools, and my spider senses say looks like a natural fit. From a money point of view, I am sure the SEC would love to have the Atlanta Market. And Clemson adds the top 10 fan base that has been well documented. The ACC would basically stop at the NC/SC border with the exception of the Florida schools, which is ok, because much of Florida has more in common with New Jersey then the rest of the "New South" see "Sopranos", see "Magic City", see "Miami Beach"

there are more UGA fans in ATL than GT fans by far and away....plus you add in the UF, Auburn, UT, and Bama fans and they outnumber GT fans 20:1.

Don't you know your history? GT left the SEC because of the way member schools recruited and the low academic rigors. They won't go back....

4 yr scholarship was a big reason Dodd pulled them out

he wanted the schools to honor a scholarship for all for yrs...the SEC membership didn't and he pulled out. Probably one of the dumbest moves ever considering how they performed until they joined the ACC.

The map is interesting, and from those numbers it just proves that the Big 12 is a stronger football conference. Clemson needs to leave the ACC while they still have a chance because in the near future the ACC is going to be considered in the same group as Big East, C-USA, Sunbelt, WAC, and MAC. We stay in the ACC Clemson’s football will suffer in every way possible

Some random observations
May 30, 2012, 3:07 PM
|

Yes, the Big 12 does rank second amongst conferences and yes, the ACC is a distant 5th. I will point out however, that aside from Duke (practically non-existant) and Syracuse (absolute doormat these last ten years despite talent) - the ACC does have a deeper set of mid-level teams as constructed. Now part of this is also due to the fact that there are simply more teams but one can make a pretty solid case that there are less bad programs in the ACC than even the SEC for example. If you are looking for some pro-ACC strength of conference arguements, that's a good place to start.
The Big 12 is decidely stronger at the top with 5 teams ranking in the Top 20. Add in FSU and Clemson and you are looking at a conference that has 7 of the top 25 football programs in the last decade. That can give the SEC a legitimate run for their money.
The SEC does have the top 3 programs in the country (#1 Alabama, #2 LSU and #3 Florida) over the last decade as well as #9 Auburn, #11 Arkansas, #18 Missouri and (close your eyes), #19 South Carolina. That's 7 of the top 20 and a big difference with the SEC teams is that they win national titles.
