Coach Batson

Nov 3, 2023, 9:40 AM

I met him in 2004 when I had a meeting with Tommy Bowden and Andy Johnston about walking on as a OLB.

They sent me to Jervey to get my diet plan and off season workout book from Coach Batson. I played my senior year of High School football for his brother-in-law so he had a little info on me and was very high-energy and excited to greet me.

I like him a lot and I think he has been a great S&C coach and a great man in general.

Having said that, it’s time for him to retire.

We need to throw the wallet at Georgia or Bama’s S&C team and get the tigers swole again.

I believe that is a big problem with our OL and the slight regression in the DL that started around the time Batson was having his heart issues.

I know absolutely nothing about strength and conditioning for football. What does Batson do wrong? What are other s&c guys doing that Batson doesn't do?

S&C coaches are usually the most insane guys on the coaching staff. Ideally you want high-energy, aggressive personalities that also know the science behind it. They have to be there all off-season making sure the guys are actually showing up and not cutting corners on their workouts.

Also, the coach should have a specific workout plan for each position group so that we can get their body types to fit their role in that offense. Every player doesn’t need the same thing.

I don’t believe Batson still has it in him to put that much intensity (like he used to) after the heart issues, and how long he’s been here.

Have thought the same thing. It seems we have more injuries than before. This could be just a coincidence. Our guys did not seem to be in the best shape in the first game and they wore down in the 4th quarter of Miami game. This could have been offense let them stay out too long.

In high school we had an amazing S&C coach until my senior year. The new guy that came in cared more about “lean muscle” instead of maximizing explosiveness and flexibility.

Not many people know this but increasing your flexibility also builds speed. I wasn’t a very flexible guy as far as a starting varsity player goes until our coach personally met with me 4 days a week and had me doing a mix of Bama and Oklahomas S&C workouts.

In the off-season between my soph and Junior years I went from running a 4.9 to a 4.6.

When the new Strength coach came in with all the “lean muscle” vs what we used to do, our players looked smaller, we were slower, and had more injuries.

I was talking about 20 years ago. We were not able to whip those teams then.

Yea that was with guys that came to Clemson ready to play day 1. Dexter Lawerence, Wilkins, Ferrell, Simmons, Etienne all freaks of nature who did not need a ton of physical development or speed development.

You know what weakest part of the team was that year though? The OL the position where it is extremely rare to get guys out of HS physically ready. Syracuse slapped that OL around much of the game. TAMU dominated them much of the game. Batson is not the guy in this era.

That’s because Alabama didn’t want to be there.

They were too tired from a hard season in the sec.

Because minus the heart issues narrative this is the same ######## that people were convinced was one of the major problems with our program early in Dabo’s tenure. The desire to latch onto simple explanations is seemingly irresistible. If Batson has reached the point he needs to step down I’m quite sure Dabo can and will make that call. All these narratives are absolutely idiotic. We are 1 full season removed from both Venables and Elliott leaving the program. Dabo had a plan in place and it was utilized for 1 season before he changed direction with the OC - which in hindsight might have been the biggest mistake Dabo has made. Hard to believe Cade and our RBs would have been worse sticking with what they knew. The DC has done fine. The defensive stats when adjusted for time of possession and field position are better now than they were in Venables last year. So many feel some need to #### on the program and believe they’ve figured something the staff hasn’t. Get over yourselves. It’s a bad year. They happen.

I didn’t say anything other than how much I liked Batson, but he’s getting older and been here forever. I guess you want him to coach until he’s 100?

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No.

He said the head coach (or Batson himself) will make the decision when it’s time.

Listen man just bc we think improvements can and should be made does not mean we want Dabo gone or are taking a "$hit on the program". I think Dabo has made mistakes and you know what that's fine, he's human. Most of us believe he will fix those issues especially the on field coaching, as needed. S&C has been a pet peeve of mine it's the only area it seems like Dabo does not look at under a microscope. There's been what 3 OL coaches under Dabo now, every OL has had the same issues that stem back to fundamental strength. 0 shot Dabo missed on all of those 4 star guys on the OL and 3 coaches.

especially when we're not winning.

But I agree with you. Strength coach gets more time with the players than anyone else. He's been there 38 years. That being said, it would take the National Guard to steal Scott Cochran away from UGA.

I do think the issue is an overall talent and speed issue more than S&C though.

The dline is elite. Oline isnt playing good due to coaching issues

Nov 3, 2023, 10:28 AM

This was a conspiracy theory brought up by the trolls like 11 years ago and was disproven back then. The trolls stopped bringing it up when we it in the six year playoff run and gave only recently brought it back up this season

Re: The dline is elite. Oline isnt playing good due to coaching issues

Batson has never been good and you can tie combine results, OL performance, and injuries right back to him. This is not a conspiracy theory Clemson was recruiting absolute freaks during their run. Dexter Lawerence, Christian Wilkins, Simmons, Etienne, Ferrell, etc all came in physically ready, . Powerlifting is not conducive to explosion on the football field.

Joey Batson is a great strength coach. However, he's had some

2

turnover on his staff with guys that TE and Venables took with him. He still has a big s&c staff and I am wonder how hands on he is now. I think he stepped back a couple of yrs a few yrs ago and let the guys on staff handle most of the day to day stuff with players.

Yeah, I’m not privy to how everything is handled now. When I was at Clemson he was in the middle of the weight room firing everyone up and yelling.

These dudes don't get the importance of staying up to date on training. What worked 20 years ago is not going to keep up with modern and innovative training now. The OL is the biggest indicator of S&C falling behind other major programs. They get 4 star guys that never get better or get push on short yardage downs. OL is not the same as DL or LBs they don't come in ready for college ball. Another key indicator why is it every year some freshmen out of HS is the strongest dude on the team? And my last point is injuries and players gassing is not a scheme problem.

Batson has been serviceable but it's time for that man to retire and to go find someone up to date.

The amount of injuries really raises a red flag that something is wrong. The amount of 4 star O linemen who aren't developing is another red flag. Now we are seeing the D line get pushed around. There's something wrong.
