Clemson's best defensive talent

Sep 17, 2012, 4:56 PM

I will start this by saying that B.V. is infinitely more qualified to make personel decisions than I am. Let's just say for the sake of conversation on T-Net, that you have been hired as the Clemson D.C. and you have all the players on Clemson's current defensive roster available (no putting Peake at CB or S). What would your defense look like? I'm play a 3-4 that looks like this.

DE - Goodman

NT - Reader

DE - Watson

OLB: Willard

MLB: Anthony

MLB: Steward

OLB: Beasley

CB: Davis

CB: Breeland

FS: Blanks

SS: Townsend

I'm not putting much experience on the field, but I'm putting my best athletes on the field and hope that their physical abilities make up for their lack of experience (and size, in terms of the OLB's)

About 3 of those guys cant read offenses, or books, so they couldnt be full time. I like a few of those, but we need more depth.

lol which three cant read books?***

Re: Clemson's best defensive talent

DE - Williams/Watkins
NT - Reader
DE - Jarret
SOLB - Goodman (running downs) Townsend (passing Downs)
JACK - Anthony
TED - Steward
WOLB - Beasley
SS - Blanks
FS - Hall/Davis
CB - Breeland
CB - Robinson

I'd want Townsend rushing the passer from the strongside if we're going 3-4. Blanks has the size to be a good SS, and is used in a similar role now. FS would be tough, but Davis could work there due to his height and athelticism (Taylor Mays?).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You going to replicate Goodman?

Sep 17, 2012, 5:06 PM

That would be impressive.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: You going to replicate Goodman?

Sep 17, 2012, 5:06 PM

edited. Durn you're fast.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm just not sure Goodman has the speed to play LB

Sep 17, 2012, 5:09 PM

Teams would run that stupid play to the TE or RB in the flat every 1st down (not that that's any different than what happens now).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I can see most of that, but ...

Sep 17, 2012, 5:09 PM

Davis and Townsend, really? I'm not sure we've seen enough of those two to say that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I've seen enough of the other guys

Sep 17, 2012, 5:10 PM

To know that it couldn't be much worse.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don't know about that either...

Sep 17, 2012, 5:13 PM

Neither Townsend nor Davis have a single tackle. Not one. It's cool to speculate and all that, but there's nothing there to say they should be starting.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Our secondary is watching the film right now

Sep 17, 2012, 5:21 PM

They still can't find the Furman player slowly loping behind them like a wounded deer. At least I know Townsend will lay the wood (we should probably have Meeks or Hall ready because he will be suspended for a hit at some point if he plays SS).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm sorry, but...

Sep 17, 2012, 10:58 PM

You don't 'know' any of that. Bottom line is, you haven't seen either one of those guys make a single tackle. To project them as starters is silly.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You're right, which is why this is purely hypothetical

Sep 17, 2012, 11:00 PM

and strictly my opinion. However, in my scenario I am the defense coordinator and I do what I want..

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, like i said...

Sep 17, 2012, 11:04 PM

It's cool to speculate and hypothesize, however...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, n, it's cool...no however***

seriously, they need to have a running clock.

They bring experience to the field

Sep 17, 2012, 5:33 PM

Other players are better athletes. If they can't figure out their assignments, we may as well have more athletic players on the filed wandering around.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Halls a good player. FACT.***

Sep 17, 2012, 5:37 PM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hall is a good player 90% to 95% of the time

Sep 17, 2012, 5:39 PM

His mistakes tend to be big mistakes unfortunately. That being said, I understand why he his on the field.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

So yeah, let's bench him for a guy who has yet to make a

Sep 17, 2012, 11:10 PM

single tackle. Yeah, that's the ticket.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You don't understand this game

Sep 17, 2012, 11:12 PM

It is not based in reality. In reality, I'm sure B.V. is playing our best possible players at their best possible positions. In my warped world, I'm putting better athletes on the field. I think Townsend will be similar to McDaniel, not quite fast enough to play safety, not quite big enough to play linebacker, but i want his attitude on the field.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Okay bud. Whatever floats your boat...

Sep 17, 2012, 11:17 PM

For what's worth, I think Townsend will be a great player if he can gain some size and ever learn his plays. Davis, who the heck knows? Regardless, I just think it's kind of funny to say they should be starting based on what you say you've witnessed, when in reality Spencer Benton has more tackles than both of the combined.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Which is why I want to get them on the field

Sep 17, 2012, 11:20 PM

You know, see what happens. I didn't say I was a good D coordinator, but I'm willing to roll the dice based on what I've seen so far this season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I like Townsend's mentality. so we're good there, but please

Sep 17, 2012, 11:23 PM

..tell me what you've seen from Davis. I'm not saying he won't be an awesome player, but really, do you even know his number? For crying out loud, he hasn't even assisted in a tackle.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I know very little about Davis

Sep 17, 2012, 11:31 PM

Other than MaxPrep ranked him as the #3 safety in the nation coming out, espn had him as the 12th best safety in the nation...so I'm curious, and at 6'3 200 pounds, I like his size for the position. I think we might see a Blanks and Davis safety combo next season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Where is Meeks? He produces....***
