Their field goal unit had to rush onto the field. I'd say that's more advantageous than calling a timeout.

You're right, no kicker has ever made a field goal after the opposing team called a timeout. My bad.

The announcers said they saw GT practice this. They were prepared, but once again Clemson wasn't.

Posted in another thread: it's not only about icing the kicker...if he misses the FG we have the ball at close to midfield with a TO; if he makes it, well, we improbably responded in a similar situation in ACC Championship game. Best choice there is to sub and bleed clock out; next best choice obviously to call timeout
