Clemson fans need to take a page out of Iowas book

One side of my family are Hawkeye fans and it always impresses me how they’ve stuck with a coach for so long. Kirk Ferentz has been the head coach there since 1999. They’ve had their ups and downs. While they’ve never quite reached the mountaintop like Clemson and Dabo has, he’s consistently produced very competitive teams, despite the not-so-fertile recruiting grounds.

His worst seasons are:
1999 1 and 10
2000 3 and 9
2012 4 and 8

So 13 seasons after taking over, the Hawkeye’s had a losing record.

Dabo took over in 2008 and about 17 years later, he’s having his first losing record since year 1. And he still has a chance to finish as good as 8-5.

I compare the two because in terms of “program value”, they are about the same according to On3. Iowa actually has more alumni (300k to Clemson’s roughly 190k). And Iowa has more TV revenue due to B10, but Clemson has a big advantage in location.

I’m not happy with this season or even a couple of the last 4-5 seasons. But Dabo has done it and can do it again. If it gets to the point where Dabo isn’t producing ANY good seasons, then it’ll be his time to go. But it’s more likely that we consistently win 9-11 games a season with an occasional (every 4-5 years) shot at a National Championship.
