Clemson being independent like Norte Dame

1

Why is this not a possibility?

I only speculate (like many do) but I’m not certain that ND can continue being Independent, long term.

The formula for ND to continue to be...

May 19, 2023, 9:41 AM

a lucrative program and maintain independence is based on how often they can make the playoff. The pay is huge for one PO appearance.

Each playoff game brings in 1/6th of the total payoff at this time. A conference with two teams get 1/3rd. If one of them makes the final game the payoff for that conference is 1/2. If both teams from a conference play in all three games the payoff to their conference is 2/3rds and the two teams eliminated get the remaining 1/3rd or 1/6th each.

One sixth is a lotta much money. 2/3rds is 4 times a lotta much. If we played independent during the playoffs which have passed we wouldn't be crying about being short changed.

Great damage would arise if we failed to cut a deal with the PO Bowl system. We'd be living on love so that much be secured previous to taking the independent. ND is included, why think Clemson wouldn't be?

Mercy, not this crap again.

Terrible idea for many reasons.

Just ask those who have been there: FSU, Coots, and most recently BYU. All could not wait to join a conference. No, we are not Notre Dame. The Irish might be able to pull it off but not many others could and be better off. Not to mention, where we park all our sports other than football.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Because we don’t have nearly the national appeal that Notre Dame does

3

May 18, 2023, 8:52 PM

and thus wouldn’t get the type of contract with NBC that they have.

I beg to differ.

There are two reasons to track a team and watch it play. Love and hate. While most of ND viewers are haters the hate or love to see ND lose is much less these days than the hate for Clemson.

Remember those wonderful days when Clemson won games that most American watched to see us because we were playing teams which were hated, Bama and the many dwarfs of the SEC? We were America's darlings because they saw us rise of national obscurity and unseat what was generally considered the best of the best?

Imo, folks across the land dreamed that if Clemson could rise and take down Goliath the perhaps their favorites might have a chance to rise to the top. That newness wore off and now those fans are jealous that we are ranked top ten because of our reputation.

We might not get a ND type TV contract but a playoff seed would compensate for that. The committee has done a very good job when seeding the playoffs. Even with the expansion the ACC continues to fall short of getting an equal share of the PO money. Clemson is losing on both fronts so IMO, independent would be much better.

We wouldn't be burdened with 'No reason to watch,' games like Duke, Wake, Cuse and VT. It might be possible to schedule more home games too.

I don't think the average college football fan regardless of coast hates Clemson, certain pockets Chapel Hill, Columbia, Athens, Tuscaloosa then yes. Beyond that, I think it is more neutral.

Unless Notre Dame wins a Natty real soon, given the changes to the power 2 conferences, they are going to struggle to get a TV contract anywhere close to the last NBC deal they got.

Just my two cents.

Hate is a strong word, perhaps jealous might be...

more applicable. You must admit that our popularity sprang from hate/jealousy/envy of Bama and now certainly UGA has merited envy. Who isn't covetous of two NC in a row? Maybe covetous is too strong and envious might be more to your taste.

The sentiments are close enough to be understood.

Just leave the ACC, go independent for a while- then let the SEC and BIG fight for us. =)

Good morning, lucky Friend! (Jealous of your

great lifestyle.)

I believe the admin feels safer with the numbers right now, meaning we have some sort of bird in hand via the ACC, albeit a puny one. Independence without the aura ND has long enjoyed could quickly result in the two in the bush, so to speak. Thus, alliances with programs like FSU, UNC, Miami, UVA, etc. offer an avenue toward bigger and better things...kind of the old strength in numbers mindset.

We have to remind ourselves that although we have built a prominent football program, we are not Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Southern Cal and others, all of whom have been among the most prominent for many years despite whatever current status they possess. That means while we have clout, that clout only reaches so far. No one is prouder of Clemson than I, but I've lived long enough to witness programs rise and fall in the public eye, said programs not having the clout of most of the mentioned schools.

Honestly, that is precisely why FSU outranks us in preseason polls, as do a number of others. Thus, we have to continue the building process...one that will require many more years of excellence in our athletic programs.

Best wishes to you.
