Clear Path to Playoffs

Nov 15, 2022, 12:49 PM

I don't post often on here, but I do think there is a very clear path to the playoffs for this team. And it follows a pretty clear logic...

1) There are only eight teams left who can legitimately make the playoffs (Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Ohio State, Michigan, TCU, USC, and Clemson).

2) If the Tigers win out, then there will not be a place for 3 SEC teams in the field. So, in effect, if we win out, there are only 7 possible teams that can make it. Hence, we are 7th at worst.

3) TCU needs to lose, making us 6th.

4) USC needs to lose, making us 5th.

5) Michigan needs to lose at Ohio State. If they beat OSU, then OSU likely gets in over us with the common opponent of Notre Dame going their way. But a Michigan loss would give us a much better chance to jump the Wolverines than the Buckeyes.

I really believe that us winning out, combined with losses by those three teams puts us in the field. And it is more likely than not that TCU loses. It is more likely than not that USC loses. And it is more likely than not that OSU beats Michigan. For all three to happen, it's probably a coin flip's chance. But at this point in the year, given where we are, I think this path forward is clearest for the Tigers.

Take care of business the next three weeks, and let's see what happens!

Clemson Tigers can only look forward to the next game and winning it. Miami and SC may not appear to be obstacles but a win over Clemson would make their season. And then the UNC group is our next game and they are tougher than they were in early season games. D. Maye is overwhelming the opposition and will be a tough out if we miss tackles and over pursue like we did at ND and have had a few lapses in other games.
Hoping Dabo has a staff member creating a plan that contains QB and the Tar Heel offense. If we miss the playoffs, we let it happen in South Bend. The lack of execution in that game should never have happened.
Go Tigers and win out.

You seem to be in a lapse about Maye...he has not had any pressure like Clemson will bring and when he does he will make mistakes...a great QB but we can pressure him like nobody else he has faced! We have a great running game and UNC cant stop the runs with two gallons of Kaopectate and a #6 cork! Shipley and Mafah will both get multiple 100+ and we will not have to worry about DJ passing! UNC will have to wait to get back at Clemson!

I use to do that type post during the Bowden years...

Nov 15, 2022, 1:08 PM

but that was about winning the conference so we could make a better bowl game. Dabo said he didn't want to back into a CC title he wanted to kick the door down.

I want to see Clemson return to kicking the PO door down and stomping into that playoff with authority not getting in because someone else lost. This is bullchit and I ain't happy about it!

Ha, ha, I remember having to play that game in the Bowden

Nov 15, 2022, 8:11 PM

Years. Scaring me a bit that we’re starting it again. I hope I don’t start seeing posts that Dabo is a “a good Christian man”, then I’ll know we’re doomed.

This, and....

Nov 15, 2022, 1:14 PM

Beating Miami by 35 points, and SC by 35 and then UNC by 21.

Regardless of whether we get in or just miss out, I hope we go on the war path these next 3 games.

Would love to see us jumping up on people 28-0, the offense clicking and hitting some big plays and the Defense attacking (like we saw last week).

I don't see a path for 3 teams from the SECheat making it anyways. If LSU wins the conference (Doubtful) by your assessment, then we are ahead of them because of our common opponent of FSU. I think a 1 loss conference champion beats out a 1 loss non-conference champ (Tennessee) Not Georgia. regardless of conference.

As bad as i dislike OSU it appears them or Michigan goes undefeated and make the playoffs.

At least 1 SECheat team makes the Playoffs not LSU or Bama.

TCU will only make the playoffs if they go undefeated.

USC still has to play UCLA, Notre Dame, and then probably Oregon or Utah. So they've got the hardest schedule remaining and if they go undefeated in the last 3 games have a good chance to make the playoffs.

there's no path for 2 teams from any conference except the SECheat making the playoffs and i don't see a chance unless a total meltdown in the final 2 weeks of 3 teams from the SECheat making it in. I know ESPN has been pushing this crap since Tennessee beat Bama but I don't think the Playoff committee buys into their crap. Just look at their first week rankings to see that.

well i believe Tenn will get in over us, even if we win the conference, because of their win over bama, and LSU,the committee has awarded them the number 5 spot currently, if one or two teams ahead of tenn loses, i expect the committee will put tenn back in, just my opinion.
i feel like if two sec teams get in they are happy to oblige and leave other teams out.. Clemson losing to ND badly is hard to overlook for any committee, Let me say i don't agree with putting a one loss non champion over any undefeated or one loss champion, those should get the first consideration , but ultimately the committee is suppose to put who they think is the 4 best teams, not what conference they belong to.. almost takes a full meltdown by other teams for clemson to slip in.. I'd love to see Georgia fall apart at Kentucky ( not much of change in snow ball you know what that will happen, and then lose to 2 or 3 loss LSU(LSU still plays texas am on the road, they look horrible, but i won't be shocked this is one game the Aggies play well).. it would make the best playoff scenario if the almighty Dawgs collapse those two games..
Georgia is by far the best team in the country and i think they will win the Natty again, they are playing at a level above everyone else right now.. but one Tiger fan can dream, lol.. Tired of the dawg fans at work saying how bad clemson sucks..

A team not winning a division shouldn't get in.

Nov 15, 2022, 10:39 PM

Losing a conference championship maybe, but not when you don't even play in the game. Plus then would have an extra week.

Win out, and our SOR raises. It may be enough to vault a non-division winning team.

Don't forget LSU

Nov 15, 2022, 10:49 PM

LSU has a good chance of beating Georgia in Atlanta. Why? Because Georgia is already in the playoffs. They don't need to win. I'm not saying they will throw the game, but they will likely not play all out. Look at last year. Georgia was light-years better than Alabama. But they got killed. Because they already knew they were in. This is my problem with non champions getting in....they don't have to give it their all in the championship game. In Tennessee's case, they don't even have to show up. If LSU beats Georgia, and TCU and USC loses....there WILL be three SEC teams in the playoffs. They will not leave an SEC champion at home, even with two losses.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I few problems with your scenario...

Nov 15, 2022, 11:05 PM

While I am confidant USC will lose, and TCU may lose as well! But...if TCU's loss is a close one in their CCG, they will have already beaten that team earlier! I'm not sure such a loss would drop them below us.

I agree we won't jump OH St, if they lose a close one to Mich, but I'm not sure if we would jump Mich either, if they were to lose a close one at OH St.

But, considering the way we have looked for most of the season, I won't be too disappointed to be 12-1 after beating UNCheat! Even if we don't make the playoff!

Great post and your scenario makes a lot of sense. I have a feeling it may come down to the committee deciding between us (having won out) and Tennessee. Yes, we will have a conference championship, and they didn't even win their division. However, it will be hard for the committee to overlook their two big wins (AL and LSU).

Nov 16, 2022, 12:18 PM

TN has passed the eye test and the committee seems very impressed with them. Assuming they smoke SC & Vandy, I really don't see them being excluded, regardless of the fact they won't participate in the SEC Championship.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The best chance of TN being left out is for USC to win out..

Nov 18, 2022, 8:01 AM

They are right behind Tennessee and LSU now, and LSU will likely lose to UGA. If USC beats UCLA, Notre Dame and then Utah or Oregon in their CCG, they would very likely, and should, vault over Tennessee!

Nov 18, 2022, 11:13 AM

I'm just curious about your thoughts on this. If you throw out everything else and just look at the way both Clemson and Tennessee have played, do you think we are better than Tennessee?

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I haven't watched but a couple Tennessee games, but I think

Nov 18, 2022, 8:40 PM

we would have a hard time keeping up with them! We would have to play better than we have all year!
