NBA to retire Russell's No. 6 for all 30 teams
The NBA will honor 11-time champion and all-time great Bill Russell by retiring his No. 6 throughout the league. A commemorative patch on uniform and a logo on courts will also be used leaguewide next season.

I agree that it is rather meaningless now that Bill Russell is dead.

I also think retiring his jersey for all teams is total overkill. What about retiring 23 for the GOAT? And many in the 60s thought Wilt was a better player than Russell.

After someone dies, the media makes then a god. As much as I admire and respect Bill Russell, and I really do, I think this is very much an over reach.
