Cervical Fusion (Prayers Needed)

Dec 31, 2020, 9:17 PM

Afternoon Tiger family. I am having a 3 level cervical fusion in a few weeks and I’d like to hear your experiences or thoughts (if any) if it’s not too much to ask.

I broke my neck and damaged my back in Afghanistan back in 2006. I had lumbar surgery in 2012 and now need a cervical fusion. Also, prayers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!

Go Tigers!

Not the answer you’re hoping for but two close friends both had cervical fusions and they both have said the pain is little to not any better but now have loss of motion to add to it. One had an accident in Afghanistan while on deployment and the other is now an addict to opioids. Be careful best wishes and prayers to you.

I came out of it much worse than I was before the fusion!!! I regret everyday of my life that I let them fuse my vertebrates together!!! But I have talked to some folks that said it worked for them. But more have said they're worse!!! You do have my prayers.

I am not a religious individual so prayers will not help from me. But I will wish you all the best. I am sure you are in great hands with the doctors, nurses and therapists. Work your butt off in rehab, stay determined, stay positive and you will come out of it great.

You will always have my support.

Prayers given. My mother had a pretty major C3-C7 fusion in the neck. It sounded scary as hell at the time. It ultimately improved her quality of life beyond what she expected. The devil’s in the details in terms of your own situation. I can tell you that the surgical techniques and procedures are incredibly advanced in this area with high rates of success.

I wish you the best of luck, and thank you for your service.

I had a 4 level c3 to c 7 fusion approximately 3 years ago due to stenosis . My experience has been to date a good one. You lose mobility but the pain has been reduced. My stenosis is in my entire spine and I had lower spine fusion 18 months ago. It is a tough recovery and I am 63 years old. I have some soreness and stiffness every day. I have seen where everyone’s experience is different. My only advice is use an experienced neuro surgeon . Good luck and god bless .

I had L3 l, L4 and L5 fused. Huge improvement. Plenty of opportunities to live on pain pills, but I’ve avoided that.

My only suggestion is to keep in mind that medical practice is part science and part art. You know more about your body than the doctors. In the course of working with doctors, surgeons and physical therapists, if you are not getting the information or results you want, do not be shy about going for 2nd,3rd, 4th opinions until you are comfortable you are getting the best possible advice. I had to become very proactive in seeing multiple docs until I found the right ones with respect to 1) them taking the time to effectively communicate 2) finding the best diagnosis / remedy.

I found I could see six docs and get four different options. They aren’t bad people. They just have different subjective opinions of the same situation.

Sending prayers for the best possible outcome, and I thank you for your service.

Nearly 20 yrs ago I had radial brain surgery, my outcome was good, and I'm grateful. However, after my surgery a few red flags arose and I went to UVA for followup. I should have gone to UVA to start with. I believe I would have had an even better outcome if I had gone there first.

So I echo the suggestions of others to seek the BEST surgical team you can find. Good luck !

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I had it done 10 years ago. I was in agony with 2 ruptured discs

Jan 1, 2021, 1:28 AM

I had the surgery and woke up pain free.
Ive noticed a slight reduction in my range of mobility in my neck. I can still pretty much turn it the same as before but I can feel my neck muscles tighten as if to try and stop it. Might be because I have a 21 inch neck. I notice when I look up to the sky as well.
I do regret I haven’t stretched my back and neck more all these years. And I could stand to lose some weight.
I agree with another poster that an experienced skilled neurosurgeon is what you want. Mine was outstanding. His name was Dr Kanos with Southeastern Spine.
I am grateful that I had the surgery. Nothing else worked and that immediately took my pain away and restored my life back to normal.

I injured my neck in Iraq in 2006 too. Had a ACDF in 2011. Dr Gardner (Greenville, SC) is the best and did a great job! About 3 weeks of recovery. Not a bad surgery!

My brother-in-law had that surgery about 2 years ago. He is doing much better. Only thing is he had to give up driving since he can no longer turn his head from side to side, he has to turn his whole body. To me, him having to give up driving was the best part. Wasn't a good driver.

In early 2009, I had a single fusion w/in a full cervical decompression. This was to correct a congenital problem that wasn't discovered until an injury revealed it after USAF flight school. When I woke up in recovery I initially thought, "What have I done?" But after a little while, the pain subsided, neck to left shoulder is kinda numb, but I have full motion and life is still good at 72. Here's hoping you'll be fine too.

Cervical Fusion done in ‘94

Jan 1, 2021, 2:29 PM

Fusion was fine after a couple of months and solved unbearable pain in any position 24/7. Had the throat cut, bone fusion procedure.
But, back then they used a diagnostic procedure called a Myelogram. Avoid that procedure. It was one of the worst experiences of my life. Hopefully there are better diagnostics now

Re: Cervical Fusion (Prayers Needed)

Jan 1, 2021, 3:53 PM

Here’s a couple of less invasive procedures that have helped with my lumbar & cervical disc issues. First of all, my situation hasn’t been at the point of requiring emergency surgery yet. One disc was close but the partial numbness subsided following corticosteroid injections & it hasn’t returned to a dangerous point since (6+ years).

Anyway, here’s some things that have worked for me & allowed for surgery avoidance (at least temporarily). They may also provide some post-surgery pain relief options for you if your fusion isn’t as successful as you hope.

I had a neurostimulator placed in my lower back 2.5 years ago & it’s helped reduce my pain levels by at least 50%. Neurosurgeons can perform the surgery & some pain management physicians can as well. I was told for several years that I couldn’t get a neurostimulator unless I had a failed back surgery. That was eventually changed & I’m very pleased with the results.

I also have a neurologist who does Botox injections (every 3 months) down the back of my neck & into my shoulder blades. It has worked very well in relaxing the neck muscles & I haven’t had any side effects. I was initially referred to this neurologist for chronic migraines but he’s been able to kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

Best of luck & Godspeed to you
