CBS Sports: Clemson is not developing its top offensive recruits

CBS Sports turned to 247Sports Director of Scouting Andrew Ivins for some points on Clemson football out of the 34-3 loss to No. 1 Georgia. Some selections from it:

Anyone who turned in over the weekend to watch Clemson in the first mega showdown of the college football season likely left with two takeaways before changing the channel in the second half and finding another game.

-The defense has the makings of a very formidable unit
-The offense leaves a lot to be desired

When Clemson was at its best and regularly playing for national titles, the offense was full of future pros. It was a system that five-star recruits wanted to be a part of and one that constantly lit up scoreboards. But things have gotten stale on that side of the ball the last few years.

In the loss to the Bulldogs, the Tigers produced just one play that went for over 20 yards. That comes after ranking 12th in the ACC last season in explosive plays. Gone are the days of boat-racing opponents. In are the days of low-scoring dogfights...

Over the past five recruiting cycles, the Tigers have brought in close to 30 blue-chip offensive high school recruits. So far only one player from that group has made his way to the pros in running back Will Shipley (a fourth-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles this year) and there might not be many more that join him.

According to NFL Draft evaluators, running back Phil Mafah and tight end Jake Briningstool are the only two upperclassmen at this stage that really have a chance to be picked in the second or third rounds of the 2025 NFL Draft and their ceilings vary significantly with some scouts believing they will likely go in later rounds. That's alarming for a program that produced 15 offensive draft picks between 2017 and 2021, including four first-round selections...

Clemson's season is far from over, and there's a chance that the Tigers could still make the College Football Playoff if Klubnik starts to figure things out, but the next time Clemson falls flat don't just point to the lack of transfer portal additions as the reason why the Tigers have regressed because the offensive staff doesn't appear to be getting the most out of the talent they already have.

I hope Dabo stops the bleeding as soon as the season is over. National media slamming player development will seep into HS recruits heads, no NIL and no development will kill Clemson on the recruiting trail.

That’s BS. Plenty of good offensive players from Clemson. Problem is Cade tips off whether the play is a pass or a run before each play with his stance. Defense doesn’t know the play only if it’s run or pass. Staffer picked up on it and it held true.

Any pictures or analysis to back up that assertion?

It already has my friend. Dabo need to hire a good receivers coach, and quarterback coach.

This part was hard to read...

"Over the past five recruiting cycles, the Tigers have brought in close to 30 blue-chip offensive high school recruits. So far only one player from that group has made his way to the pros"

Makes me want to vomit.

Most of those recruits haven't been in school long enough to be drafted yet.

The 2020 offensive class was a bust, but 3 of those classes haven't been in school long enough to go pro yet. Briningstool and Tristan Leigh from the 2021 class will hopefully make it to the NFL eventually.

I absolutely despise people who will say things like that bc of his dislike or whatever toward Clemson. Even at my age and my disability, that SOB wouldn't get away with saying something like that around. I would love to take my oldest grandson with me wherever he is speaking at and question him about that comment, and Have my grandson ready to fire his A$$ up the very second something like that came from his mouth...

;) My oldest grandson is much like his grandpa was at his age I would swing on a polecat in an instance if they came out their mouth the wrong way about the people that I loved, and I would keep that fire hot until they couldn't say another word about my family, friends, and Clemson in an instance like this one bc there is love in my heart for Clemson!!!

Tough article on Clemson but if you look at Dabo’s hiring early as a head coach up to 4-5 years ago there is some logic. Dabo tried to hire the best and most qualified coaches he could get early. He did a great job with that. Morris was a stretch but it worked, Venables was a home run, Brooks, Reed, Hobby, and others all had tons of experience. Scott and Elliot were home grown and we obviously had great success with them. I believe Dabo felt like he could bring them along with his own experience as a position coach as well as Morris’s recommendations. Once there was some turnover he went completely internal and hired former players and friends that he played with as assistants.

The last hires he made tells me he recognized the mistake. Riley, Luke and Rumph were all in high demand and have the resumes. Hopefully those changes and some additional ones in the future get us back on track. It’s hard to argue that we have developed players at the same level the last 3-4 years compared to previous 10.
