Can't outrun your past...

So, Castellanos gets benched at BC...takes his toys and schleps off to FSU to be a star. FSU will return to glory with him pulling the trigger. He was 4-4 with BC before the benching...now 3-3 with 'the 'Noles'. Perhaps, he is what he is.

The 'Fighting Mercenaries' have now lost 8 straight conference games. Exactly WHAT is Mike Norvell supposed to be exactly? Perhaps, he is what he is.

Anyone see the brutally honest assessment of Norvell's program last night? Essentially, how is there a culture, when the roster consists largely of guys who've come from other 'nations'.

I guess...and it really is just that, a guess...but it would seem the litmus test of a program's culture is, how do the 'paid players' respond after a loss? FSU and Penn State seem to show serious flaws. Oregon is the next one sitting for the test.

Castellanos seemed like a good get. I did not watch much of the game, but the kid is a winner. I'd say the Portal Has helped the ACC close the gap, GT and Pitt are legit teams, as are SMU and miami. It has been a while since we could point at 5 teams with a shot at the ACC Crown in one season.

He's okay, not great. His best skill set is running ability. He's a little less skilled at passing.

He’s definitely elusive. Not the best passer though. Kind of like Sellers, if you can bottle him up, you can beat them.

Even his TD passes yesterday required great plays from the receiver to haul in. He is a gunslinger that probably takes too many risks with the deep balls to keep his INT count low. His legs are his asset and that is enough in college if you have enough talent around him. FSU looked unbeatable for a couple of weeks but are now in free fall. Parity? Culture? Or did teams just get enough tape on them to shut them down?

I view him like you. He could have stayed for the season and transferred. Not a fan of his antics

My opinion.
When the portal is used, you have to have a plan in place as to what you want. If you’re going for broke, Championship or bust, you run the risk of mutiny when your losses put you out of contention. This happened with several teams with opt outs in bowl games and preservation of eligibility.
Option B is using the portal as a supplement to your current roster. Fill in spots of need with players that fit your desired culture and integrate them with your incoming HS recruiting class.
I believe option B is what can be used at CU with great success if used more often.
This of course means getting rid of some players through graduation or attrition. Some hard decisions will have to be made about some of the players on the roster that should not have a scholarship.
This is what a HC and his staff are paid to do.
It’s hard and not pleasant.

Growing Pains managing a for-pay roster - do NFL teams have a CULTURE?

College (why do we keep using this term is beyond me) football’s professional for-pay roster is NEW, and athletic departments are still figuring out how to structure their contracts properly to get the right player incentives to perform at the highest levels.

The contract structure is HARDER at the “college” level due to the transfer portal. All contracts have to be structured around 1-year deals, due to the yearly revolving door of the portal.

Most players don’t have past seasonal resumes like Carson Beck, so it is hard get players properly valued and then subsequently properly incentivized to perform in accordance to their contract markers.

Some teams have $150M-$20M as their slush funds to see if players will pan out.

It is still early in the process. Give FSU some time, and I think they will figure it out.

Right now, I would say that FSU is further along with the college pro model than Clemson is. I think Clemson is probably 3 years behind and $30M short.

As far as culture goes, do NFL teams have a culture?

Not really. NFL team culture sort of follows the owners of the team, e.g., Jerry Jones and the Dallas Cowboys. In the new college model, if you’re goal is to win NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS, then, I’m not sure that culture really matters anymore.

Having said that, NO ONE does a better job at fostering a old-college model culture than Dabo Swinney.

I think the evidence suggests your premised is flawed. Pitt, GT and Miami used the portal very effectively.

"Dabo doesn't want to use the portal. We should just stop saying that he does". ~ Judge Keller

Whose premise are you challenging?

No premise was made regarding specific portal use. My points were:
1. FSU was crowned as returning to glory with a QB who was .500 at his prior stop...and remain .500.
2. Norvell has gutted FSU's program via the portal
3. Leaving them with a 'culture', as it were, that appears to be failing. That was discussed last night at halftime of the Tiger's game.
4. Since money is the apparent driver behind much portal activity, a litmus test was offered up in the form of, how do the 'paid' players respond to a loss and cited a couple of programs that, by all metrics, pay for a lot of talent.

The portal is fine and there's little doubt Dabo will use it more and more, but making wholesale use likely isn't his style. To the extent possible, he will remain wholly 'culture-based'.

You have to compare him to whomever they might have had at quarterback otherwise. Obviously this whole system isn't working out for FSU right now. Are we doing so much better?

Jimbo the Fisher and Willie Taggart left that program in a shambles that will take years, maybe decades to get back on consistent winning ground. Everything the "Old Man" built there has been torn down and destroyed. It is a shame, really. They were the crown jewel of the ACC for a long time and whether Norvell can fix it remains to be seen.
