It was pretty solid and then they fired Jim Davis. Then coaching change after coaching change. I think Shawn Poppie has the goods to get it going again

Jim's last few seasons were not that solid. The program slipped. His last season they went 8-20. They did not make a good hire with that Kristi McKinney then it really spiraled out of control after her.

Exactly. Jim did a lot of good here but things were trending the wrong way.

As you said, the coaching hires since left a lot to be desired. McKinney, Coleman, and Smith were all poor hires. None of those three had any real success prior to Clemson, and certainly nothing in their backgrounds to suggest that they would be successful here.
Amanda Butler was a step up, and she at least had high major experience as a head coach prior to Clemson. She had some success at Florida, but not the consistency you would like to see when taking on a rebuilding job like our program was/is.
I think Poppie was an excellent hire. I expect him to turn the program around.
Neff knows what he is doing, and this is yet another example.

I think the Smith hire was the worst of the bunch

Because at least with Coleman you could see the vision with the Clemson ties and the idea that she was maybe an up and comer.
Smith had an entirely mediocre record at UAB for many years. So not sure why anyone thought she could turn from mediocre to a winner in the ACC when she couldn’t at UAB’s level.

You're right coach Davis' in 2 of his last 3 seasons the program was slipping with 2 losing seasons and those were the only 2 losing seasons he had in 18 seasons while the Tigers head coach. What I am most happy with though is what he did by making 14 NCAA Tournaments,2 WNIT's,2 ACC Tournament Titles and finished with a record of 355–197 overall 154–124 in the ACC.As for the 2024-25 Tigers, well the season is over with and I plan on not saying anything else but will be pulling for coach Poppie to do what is needed to get the program back to winning once again and hopefully not just 1 season like Amanda Butler did in her first season.

that women's hoops is NOT a priority. Instead of going out and finding the best possible person for the head coaching job, they appointed subordinate ADs to find someone willing to accept the job for the salary range they established which is why we've had a revolving door of coaches for the last several years. That said, I thought Amanda Butler was a solid hire (certainly better than McKinney, Coleman and Smith). I am also optimistic that Poppie can right the ship that has been floundering for so long.

and the goal isn't to make them competitive on a national level (and they haven't been for a long time), then close down the program.

was there anything mutual about parting with Amanda Butler? I find the approach to men's and women's basketball coaches wildly inconsistent. Butler at least made the NCAA once and in six years her results had a consistent pattern of being up and down year to year. Even with those up and downs her overall win % was better than anyone since Davis. Would be one thing if they went a made a splash hire but they ditch the long term investment strategy and grabbed someone with very little track record.

It was not a good game.
Both teams looked really bad including air balls and "passes" thrown to empty seats.
It was a close game we almost and probably should have won.

Kohn was Caitlin Clark lite last night. Big shots. Thought they played good considering Louisville beat them by 20+ earlier in year.

So which tactic does the Tigernet basketball expert cadre want us to employ: change coaches every time you’re disappointed with the result, or stick with someone through the lean times?

Depends on results & what’s going on behind the scenes too.
Many times we aren’t aware of the real reason a change was made other than record.
It was the only thing that saved Brad, he was running a clean program and did the little things behind the scenes.

Thanks to Dabo Swinney. Because of him, I believe many athletics programs at Clemson, including MBB, have turned a corner and are no longer content to be average. I've so enjoyed seeing him in the stands at many of the recent home games. I know his presence is a substantial lift to Coach Brownell and his entire staff. Perhaps he can provide the same type of mentoring and leadership to the WBB coaching staff.
