in these primaries/caucuses?

I assume it’s because they truly like him and think he’s the best Republican nominee. He’s crushing Haley and crushed all the other dozen or so candidates when they were still in the race. It hasn’t even been close.

So what is it?

Name recognition?

A belief that the is the most likely candidate to beat Biden?

Is it actually because they have a close alignment with his policies and leadership style?

I’m asking this sincerely, as someone who voted for him twice before and liked a lot of what he did, but now can’t stand the man and would vote for Biden instead of him if they were my only two choices.

I just honestly can’t believe this many people actually like the guy at this point and think he’s a great choice to lead our country.

do not like new blood unless they're forced to elect someone new. That's why republicans have senators that serve into their 90's. Incumbent republican governors/senators/sheriffs/mayors in the south rarely ever lose to a democrat and even less lose their party bids as the incumbent. Blind loyalty is all it is. Straight ticket voters.

With Trump - I gots to admit - North Korea stopped testing missiles; Putin didn't invade anywhere; ISIS was quickly put down. The border was as calm as it could be - at least he tried to do something.

Also, all of these lawsuits (which all waited until he announced he was running) and some states trying to keep him off of the ballot as an insurrectionist only bolster his claim that The Swamp is out to get him. His followers love that poop.

I'll be voting 3rd party - hopefully enough people do that to "make a statement".

Your premises about Trump’s lack of accomplishments re border, RUS / UKR, N.Korea are intentionally misleading.

Trump’s border was infinitely better than Biden’s despite Trump’s border policy objectives being constantly undermined by RINO Republicans and Democrats. Lawsuits out the wazoo … just like today; LawFare has been used against Trump and his policies since his first day in office.

UKR / RUS ‘armed conflict’ was of the skirmish variety when Trump was in office. Full out offensive operations when Obama and Biden was / is in office. Trump used the economic threat of nat gas exports to the EU to keep Putin on a short leash. Obama and Biden signaled openly (via green energy policies) that this most important diplomatic tool of deterrence would not be used.

N.Korea was engaged diplomatically by Trump. Yes, NoKo still kept up with ballistic missile development, but they stopped ‘tests’ over Japan after Trump ‘talked’ to Dear Leader. Enter Biden; NoKo test fired another ballistic missile over Japan.

Let’s face it. Your non-Trump candidates are proven bums. Trump is infinitely better than them; he has a proven track record. Your guys also have a proven track record. Unfortunately for your TDS buddies, their records are terrible.

Crossings at the southern border remained flat from 2011 through 2018. Then in 2019, they tripled. There isn't any empirical evidence that shows the border was any better under Trump. Sorry.

Trump was unable/unwilling to stop Russian aggression in Ukraine the entire time he was in office. Sorry again for the inconvenient facts.

I hope you didn't hurt your back moving those goal posts on NKorea. I'm embarrassed that you actually hit the send button after typing that.

More parsing of statements on your behalf in a desperate attempt to create a fictitious narrative in support of the Democrats. Sorry to be the one to tell you, but it didn’t work.

Trump’s border policies were undercut by RINOs and Democrats; it took them 3 years to defeat Trump’s executive orders -&- his negotiations with the Mexican govt. They largely stopped Trump’s border wall construction. This is why Trump gets the highest marks on border security; he did his best to stop the influx of illegal immigrants that were / are so desperately sought by the RINOs and Democrats.

As for the Russian invasion of the Ukraine, you are really digging deep in a futile attempt to equate Obama’s and Biden’s failures to Trump’s successes. Preparation H should help to ease the pain.

We will build the wall
Mexico will pay for it
We will deport every illegal immigrant in US
He pledged to uphold every US law, unlike Hillary

Reality
Trump built only 50 miles of the wall
US citizen though tax dollars paid for the wall that was built
Obama deported more immigrants each year in office than each trump year in office
He encouraged the largest attempted coup in our country’s history

Trump IS the Swamp thing.

Sadly he could not get major border protection passed when republicans controlled the house and senate. He had his turn. Joe can’t get it done either. Sadly he is even worse than trump.

You're really stretching comparing Putin holding the part of Ukraine that he already had when Trump took office with the Ukraine invasions of 2014 and 2022.

Shirley you remember Trump being fought every step of the way when trying to deal with the border? I know in 2019, he got Mexico to use their military to slow crossing at their North and South borders. He definitely TRIED to do something...

Their political identity is wrapped up in Trump and his fake martyrdom, which draws them even closer to him.

I thought that when he tried to overturn the 2020 election, that enough people would turn against him within his own party to do him in. But I was wrong. The average GOP voter doesn't care about Democracy, and they're willing to throw it away because they hate The Left.

For someone who allegedly doesn’t care about his constituents, Trump has nevertheless won passionate support by millions because of what he had done and what he sincerely tried to do.

Border: Trump did more to try and close the border to illegal immigration than any president since … ever. Despite being blocked again and again on the border wall by RINOs and Democrats, his ‘remain in Mexico’ policy and getting Mexico to rigorously enforce the border … at Mexico’s expense … was the most effective border policy since illegal immigration via Mexico had morphed from seasonal migration (for agricultural workers) to permanent migrants (I.e., voters for the Democrat party).

Fair trade via, among other factors, meaningful tariffs on imports from P.R.China helped to stem the tide of ‘off-shoring’ of American industries. Aside from helping to preserve the economies of several Midwestern states, this move helped the country to recognize the threat to our national security when we become overly dependent on foreign exports for crucial products.

Christians correctly recognized the government’s soft assault on Christianity and Christian values. DEI laws and soft coercion of private companies to force DEI hiring / promotions on their personnel policies and their marketing programs are rightly viewed by Christians as corrosive to American values of hard work and merit based rewards. This is a long topic, so I’ll keep this response short and use it as bait to trigger the TDS crowd. Suffice it to say that Trump supporters recognized Trump’s unambiguous support of policies which are not antithetical to traditional American values.

Thus, for the limited subset of Americans which were positively affected by Trump and negatively impacted by Obama & Biden, the ‘border worriers,’ ‘America first,’ and Christians, respectively, believe they are justified in having Trump’s philosophical + kinetic support has earned their support in return.

Actions vs Speculation (I.e., TDS crowd ruminations about what they want to believe is going on inside Trump’s head).

Action wins. TDS’ers lose.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The problem (with immigration especially)...

1

Mar 4, 2024, 1:20 PM
Reply

is he didn't actually fix anything.

With immigration/border security, just about everything he did was via EO's and, as we have unfortunately seen, they can be easily changed by subsequent administrations. He left after 4 years with no substantial changes to the immigration law or border security.

The one attempt at making lasting change was the very poorly structured RAISE act, which was as much about cutting legal immigration as it was about curbing illegal immigration.

Trump's big campaign pledge was to build a wall on the Southern border and have Mexico pay for it. After 4 yrs, neither happened.

And, please understand, I fully support building more enhanced border wall/fence/security. Trump had party control of both houses of Congress his first 2 years and didn't get it done.

And this is one of the biggest problems I had with Trump's presidency...he wasn't a leader...he wasn't a persuader...he thrived (as still does) on separating and pitting sides against each other. That works to incent both sides of an issue versus making a real case and selling it to the people.

Fair Trade...

He started a trade war with China that accomplished very little outside of feeding inflation. It did not meaningfully slow off-shoring. What it did do is create price hikes...especially in steel. He announced the initial national security tariffs seemingly out of nowhere. The steel industry wasn't ready and US manufacturers weren't ready. Overnight the price of steel jumped 15% plus an import tariff of 25%, for a net adder of +40%. For my company, there is only 1 US manufacturer of the type of steel we use and they already didn't have any more capacity. So, all that happened is our cost of steel went up 40% and the companies we compete with out of Mexico and Canada only saw the raw commodity increase of 15%. Thanks Trump. Years later...the situation is EXACTLY the same...only we have tariffs on all kinds of other things we can't source well out of the US. And, of course, China imposed like-for-like tariffs on US goods, hurting US companies ability to export their product to China.

I was wholly opposed to it, but the Inflation Reduction Act and the infrastructure laws passed under Biden are having a much larger impact on moving manufacturing back to the US due to the Buy America and Buy American aspects of the requirements. Which are a total PITA, but is forcing us to tool up suppliers in the US and pay 4-5 times as much for material to comply with the acts. It remains to be seen if we'll get a selling price high enough to make it make sense...but it dang sure isn't going to reduce inflation.

Inc. apparatchiks) have been left with one of two choices; vote for Trump or the Republican Inc. poster girl of the month. The Republican voting base may not be "all in" for Trump but they absolutely abhor Republican Inc. and that is why Trump is waltzing his way to the Republican Primary win.

I'm sure Nikki Haley is a fine woman on a personal level, but she has always been in the Republican Inc. camp. Her political career is a product of working within the Republican Inc. apparatus and she has truly never left their ranks.

Recently Nikki's been trying to sell the "I'm not the "Republican Elites" candidate but her rhetoric, actions and donor money say otherwise. She completely lost any hope she had of getting my primary vote when she went on SNL (a group that has bashed conservatives for decades) and snuggled up to a bunch of NY Democratic donors in private fundraising dinners. Only a Republican Inc. shill would pull that kind of garbage.

I personally don't like Trump and don't want Trump but will not vote for another Republican Inc. candidate so long as I have a choice of other Republican candidates. And before you anti-Trump headcases sound off - I cast a meaningless vote for DeSantis in the primary because he was the candidate I liked most and was still on the ballot even though he dropped out of the race. But yes - if (more like when at this point) Trump wins the Republican nomination I will vote for him in the General election because to vote for ANY Democrat for Federal office, in this day and age, is to vote for policies with which I disagree with some being outright insane.

Maybe even the same in 2020.

But it's different now. We've seen the corruption of Trump. We've seen the multiple felonies. We've seen him try to overturn an election. And he's said himself that this 2nd term will be about revenge.

So, while your explanation explains YOU, it doesn't come close to explaining the vast majority of the Red Hats.

then we simply will never see eye to eye on things. The Democrat rot and corruption runs just as deep if not deeper because they have spent years constructing and running the majority of the DC eco-system with the assistance of Republican Inc. The current DC eco-system, with it's politicization, propaganda, and red-tape grip on everything it touches is among the most corrupt in our nation's history.

That being the case, I'm of the opinion that anyone who votes for a candidate based on ANYTHING other than a candidates stated and/or observed policy positions/implementations is a moron. To think ANY candidate for the Presidency, particularly in this day and age, is some paragon of moral virtue that is beyond the crooked games it takes to make it through the ranks of today's two Party DC eco-system is to be greatly deceived. In the words of Pappy Boyington - "Show me a hero and I'll show you a bum."

Those who vote for Trump based on his cult of personality are stupid. Likewise - those who vote for Biden simply because they hate Trump are every bit as stupid as the Trump drones you like to disparage.

If you agree more with Trump's demonstrated/espoused policies - let that be the reason you vote for him. If you agree more with Biden's demonstrated/espoused policies - let that be the reason you vote for him.

But if you aren't making voting decisions based on actual policy - then you are buying into the very deceptive tangential issue BS the establishment Political eco-system has been selling for years that has gotten us into the financial/over-bearing central Government controlled shidhole we are in today.

He hasn’t been convicted of any felonies, other presidents have questioned elections and asked for recounts. He was way more vocal about it. With good reason. I go to bed at 2am on election night and Trump is firmly in the lead for Michigan, with over 90% of the vote counted. Then wake up the next morning and Joe Biden is winning by almost 3%. So the election workers pulled an all nighter? Never heard of that. From 2am to 7am, somehow Michigan found enough votes for Biden to flip the state. I have never seen anything like that in any other election.

He has openly admitted to felonies, but claims the immunity of a dictator. There is no disputing he’s a criminal.

For the bird brains, there might be a debate on if he’s a traitor to the country. Anybody with an IQ over 70 knows he is a traitor, and those who still choose to vote for him must be the worst kind of trash. If you have some idiotic, shit-eating argument that “the democrats are just as corrupt,” do yourself, the country, and the rest of the world a favor by not voting. A vote for Trump is a vote for Russian hegemony, an end to NATO, and the end of America as a democracy.

The same question could be asked of the obviously intellectually superior Biden voters?

Dems have another choice in Dean Phillips who is well spoken, young and without a doubt mentally competent.

Nonetheless, Dems are overwhelmingly voting for a man who is obviously not on his game, who is told who he can take questions from and when he can answer questions.

So bask in the intelligence of supporting Biden over a capable center left person who is his own man.

Bask in choosing unknown people behind the curtains to run the country.

You are a very rare case. Overwhelming majority of the country is financially better off now than they were four years ago under Trump or eight years ago under Obama. Just an obvious effect of growth since the great recession and the very, very liberal policies of the Fed regarding the money supply.

If you have a 401k with any substantial balances then I agree that you're likely better off than 2020 and MUCH better off than 2016. However do you know that most people have either no 401k whatsoever or a very modest balance if they do? Those people are indisputably worse off than four years ago due to the rampant inflation, with which their wages have not kept pace. Now I do agree you can't lay all of the inflationary woes at Bidens feet but we can't pretend they don't exist for many poor and middle class people who aren't enjoying the stock market rise.

You, dear lady, are very, very wrong. Wage growth has exceeded inflation for the last three years. Even with the high inflation in 2022. Social Security increases are based directly on the CPI, so they have at least kept pace.

Very very really? Perhaps, but if you think most hourly (poor) peoples raises over the last three years have outpaced inflation then you're mistaken. And as far as that goes, try asking some old people who are living entirely on SS if their benefits have kept pace with actual inflation, not the CPI fantasy we all hear about. Good luck finding any poor old people who have more disposable income than they did three years ago although I will grant you they have fared better than the working poor who, believe it or not, don't get CPI adjustments every year.

To be fair, if you choose the middle of 2022 as a biased basis, it looks like wages were not keeping up. That's because wage increases lag both inflation (indirectly) and the the labor shortage (directly). Wage increases in late 2022 and 2023 were large in order to get people to take or change jobs in a very tight labor market.
