wondered the same, my best guess is we did not need the points, but the coaches wanted to see how they would respond under pressure.

My guess: Trying to get closer for the FG try. It ended up being 50 yards even after the gain.

I thought the same but the FG team was in place and ready to go as soon as ball was placed ready for play.

They did it to test the team, but more to make sure they didn’t get an offsides or something that would have messed it up if they tried to spike it etc…..

Also, Clemson did not know how much time was going to be on the clock, so they didn’t know if there would be enough time for a spike to stop the clock with time left. I think the coaches did good.

I would say the team had no way of knowing exactly how much time would be given on the clock and instead of risking the clock reset at say 3 seconds which starts at refs whistle (not the snap) it could have expired during a spike. So instead they just ready the field goal unit and could be ready with as little as 1 second on the clock.

OR, maybe they are smart enough to know they

Are dealing with ACC refs who already tried to screw them out of even attempting a FG and weren’t sure they would have even a second left on the clock, which wouldn’t be enough time to clock it.

"The one who thinks we can and the one who thinks we can't are both right! Which one are you, son? Which one are you, son?"

I think the cutoff is 3 seconds required to clock it so

legitimate concern how much time they were putting back on and just went ahead with FG unit on the field

Have you not yet figured out that our coaches are not good at coaching football?
