Can physicality be coached

Can being physical be coached up ? They say you can’t coach speed you can get faster with training but being naturally fast is just different. Brown seems to be the only consistent aggressive physical player on the defense. Bouleware Skalski Simmons Kirkland Wilkins brought it with them.

The world was a different place back in Danny's day. I remember many times a player would come off the field and Danny or one of the assistants would grab the kid's facemask and chew on some rear end. Being physical is a decision the players have to make.

I don’t believe so. You either have a love of contact or you don’t. If you love contact you sit and dream about situations where you get a great lick on somebody and you are always looking for that. It is not normal to want to run full speed at another human being so I don’t begrudge those who don’t enjoy it, they just shouldn’t be playing high level football.
Coach V used to say you can tell whether a dog will bite when talking about defensive players. I think people who crave hitting can smell hesitancy in those who don’t.

I'd say yes but more in the sense of it's a mindset that goes into how you practice everyday. Look at Oklahoma's defense now versus where they were pre-Venables. Similarly, look at how consistently awful Lincoln Reilly's defenses are no matter where he is or what DC he has.

Yes, Dabo proved that back 2014(I think) before we played LSU he had 1's go against 1's and it helped. The challenge today is they are limited to how much full contact they can have at practice each week. Coach's mindset also has a big effect on players IMHO.

Yes but to a point. You can get someone to be more physical, but there's a limit to how physical someone will ever be. A big part of that is mentality. You still need to have the necessary strength, etc., but the mindset is a vital component. This is where I think we're hurting the most. We don't have enough "football guys."

This 100%. There are no Alpha Males on this team. It’s just as much a mental thing as a physical thing. Take a look at our coaching staff and assistants tho. It explains a lot.

Another key aspect of highly physical players is their ability to play all-out even when suffering from severe pain from non-debilitating injuries.
I believe that coaching can improve a ‘be tough, be physical’ mindset in a player, but the natural attribute of a person who is less affected by pain (compared to most people) cannot be coschrd.

Being physical is definitely a mental makeup. No matter how much you challenge some players, they are always on the receiving end of a man on man challenge . It can be brought out of some players by continuing to challenge them each day and they decide that they are going to be the hammer instead of the nail. My son was always considered a gentle giant until he had his helmet snatched off during a JV football game his freshman year. After that play he proceeded to beat the crap out of the guy that snatched off his helmet. He was never the same man on the football field after that game. Sometimes coaches are mesmerized with a player’s size and are sure that the physicality will eventually come. Sometimes that doesn’t work out.

Yes physicality can absolutely be coached bc it’s a mindset.
If your coaching is constantly preaching physicality and holding players to that standard otherwise they don’t play then yes.
It has to be part of the mindset of your coaching staff and that should fold into the team.

It can but 50% of it is strength and conditioning in my opinion. You can coach it but if the S&C isn't there it won't matter much.

Excellent point. Highly developed musculature provides extra dimensional stability to joints. Damaged joints really hurt; furthermore, damaged joints physically impair the ability to play regardless of the player’s toughness or highly physical nature.
