BYOB - Bring your own Biscuit

My grandmother died when my mom was only 7. My grandpa wanted biscuits everyday so he took my mom at 7 years of age and told her there is flour, buttermilk and shortnin' - make biscuits. She never learned to measure formerly she just worked it out by feel.
And so, she made biscuits every day of her life. At first they turned out dry and hard but gradually they got better. Grandpa would tell her everyday, "you're gettin there Doc, you gettin there" (Doc was my Grandpa's generic name for anyone at random)
By the time she married my dad, she was a biscuit making goddess. My grandmother on my dad's side said to me once: "I always thought I was good biscuit maker until your dad married your mom, now she makes a biscuit." Pretty strong compliment from a Southern mother in law.
So when I was growing up mom taught me and my sister how to make biscuits. My sister is doing pretty good with it. For me I make them pretty good, about one out of 5 batches turns out a little less than what I am shooting for. But its mainly because of lack of doing it. Just something that has to be done regularly to keep the feel.
Back in the day mom would bring a mess of biscuits to tailgates before the games. My buddies liked that and a few to go as well.
Self rising fluor, crisco shortnin, buttermilk. Have at it and see if you can find the feel for making a good biscuit.
I stumbled upon this ladies two ingredient recipe and tried it - they were pretty good but not like my mom used to make! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k4krDR2dtow&t=406s
So what's your biscuit story. Better get ready its a early game and if you BYOB its about time to make biscuits.

My grandmother's recipe for biscuits....

Not only did she not measure anything, she never wasted anything.
She would pour flour into a big bowl. Way more than she would use. She would hollow out the center of the flour, making a bowl within the flour. She would add the ingredients, butter and milk, and just work it into the flour. By feel, not by measuring. When it got the right consistency she would pat out a biscuit by hand. If she needed more biscuits, she would just add more milk and butter. When she had enough biscuits she would just pour the remaining flour back in the big container where she kept the flour.
I don't think she ever had "whomp biscuits" (biscuits in a can that you had to "whomp" on the corner of the cabinet to open) in her house.

Seems like our preceding generations had a better view of waste not want not in life than now.

That is a great story. My mom used to make the canned biscuit type - lol. She was an awesome cook but spent her time on making the main meal which was ALWAYS excellent. With my dad and three sons she figured it was easier keeping us full with the canned ones because we could put them away - lol. When I moved out on my own I decided to learn to make them from scratch. The job I had was in a rural area with some good ole boys that had a fish fry down by the river at a camp they had on Thursday nights. I would always make biscuits and take them. They ranged from hard as rocks to a perfect fluffy biscuit but I never had to throw even 1 out so I guess they were ok LOL. Its been many years since I made them but I never perfected it as I didn't make them every day. It is a nice memory to recall so thanks for posting your story. I wouldn't have remembered those fond days if you hadn't.

you reminded me of what to do with hard or dry biscuits!
Split in half and lather with butter (no not margarine - real butter) and toast in the oven until browned. Then take the toasted biscuits and crumble them into a bowl and pour Karo corn syrup over them or honey if you like it. Dang that is good. Pure comfort food. If you have grandkids or small children give them some of that mixture and they will think they ask for it every time they come over. FWIW - good biscuits work for this too!
I sometimes save a biscuit or two just for that the next day.

The best biscuit makers measure nothing. Big ole bowl of flower and they work Crisco or lard into the middle.
