I see that Wake averaged 5 yards per play last year

and we had 30 penalty yards.
Today we allowed 6.6 yards per play and had 120 penalty yards. 75 of those were from PI where our DBs got roasted and would've given up big gains.

curtain. A football Rain Man savant that had memorized every play he’d ever seen and knew how to defend against anything. Apparently, Wake’s offensive adjustments were otherworldly and a bridge too far.
Simultaneously, it was fun watching our offense go from TDs, to FGs, to punts, to 3-and-out. We are extremely fortunate to come out with the win. DJ played well.

I will say this. BV never got beat by that shovel pass again. He learned from his mistakes. But he has been torched by other teams just not wake. I think our secondary skill/experience is the problem right now. I’m also surprised by our DL lack of pass rush.

^^ Truth. I’m a massive fan of BV but some of the revisionist history on this board about BV never doing (insert hyperbole) or being lights out from day 1 is embarrassing. Those early BV seasons, 2012 and some in 2013, we would get gashed on the reg and struggle to get off the field on 3rd down. People really need to do a little bit of homework or memory before they post.

Pitt, LSU, Bama, USuC coached by Sean Elliott, NC in the ACC Championship game, he had plenty of clunkers not having his two best DB's out for the game.
He was a great coach. But there were plenty of times the offense bailed us out, just like today.

But we have had some other bad defensive performances since then (not including the obvious ones against elite teams like 2013 FSU, 2019 LSU and 2020 Ohio State).

In 2020 his defense gave up over 40 points in two games. Notre Dame and Ohio State. Never is a big word.
