Yep, you're one of those that hasn't watched much softball.
I just remembered something a friend whose daughters play softball told me......if you look at the girl's hair the phrase to remember is "no bow lesbo". That sounds politically incorrect but it just lets you know the cuter girls tend to have bows in their hair.

It's 6:25 and Zona is playing LSU on ESPN. It's almost over but if you get a chance to look at it you will see there are obviously tons of cute girls playing D-1 softball.

I'd say money is the issue. Women's fast pitch softball is much less boring than baseball.

So you say it is as boring as watching paint dry. Well this past weekend, my daughters team was involved with a tied game that went into 3 international tye breakers. A game that had grown men pacing and sick. so why is it boring? have you ever attended a game?

Won't happen. Women's sports don't make money...

So rather than spend a ton of money on a new facility for a sport that will lose money, they invest into facilities that both men and women's sports can use. It cuts down on the overall spending and loss. I think the only sports we have for Women that aren't duplicates are Rowing (needs no facility), Volleyball (use Littlejohn), and Diving (used to have a Men's team). That's why adding Women's Golf this season made sense.

Without a doubt. Even when our baseball program was selling out and having huge crowds, they were barely breaking even once you think about all the expenses: coaches, facilities, travel, food, hotel, marketing, bids on post season, recruiting, etc. Traditionally the only sports that make money are FB and BB. And basketball doesn't even make money for everyone.

I don't think so. The games that I see are all packed. I think it's really catching fire these days. My friend at work has her daughter playing now and she's pretty far, good. They are CU fans and would love to see a team in place by the time she's in college. We'll see. I'm all for it.

If we add softball we would probably need to add a men's sport to stay in compliance with Title IX so you are really talking double the cost.

I don't understand your point. Your post sounds like Clemson only has some women's athletic teams because it is required......you're saying Clemson only fields the cheapest women's sports.
Why are schools that have significantly smaller athletic budgets than Clemson fielding softball teams? The women's teams you mentioned that Clemson does have will probably never attract the number of fans IN TOTAL that a successful softball team would attract.
Softball is getting bigger east of the Mississippi. The western schools have ruled the sport for decades but it is really growing around here and numerous schools east of the Mississippi are spending money on the sport. ESPN would be televising women's rowing if there were more interest in that than softball.
And to those saying watching softball is boring and akin to watching women's basketball vs. men's basketball, you've missed something about softball. I can certainly see why women's basketball is boring compared to men's, it's the same game with less talented players. But softball is almost a totally different game from baseball....the two are totally different when it comes to pitching and hitting and that's more than 50% of the game.
Hey, is it more exciting to win a NC in women's rowing (comparable to SCAR's equestrian NC) or to win a softball NC? Why not field teams that at least some have an interest in watching?

Oh, and to those that think it's boring.....some of these teams have some really cute girls.
I remember watching the entire national championship series several years ago between Arizona and Tennessee. Most of the UT girls looked like female Phil Fulmer's but there were several Arizona girls that looked like supermodels. I remember Arizona's catcher was covered in dirt with her mask on and when she'd throw her mask off for a popup it was like whoa!!! And it was funny to me Arizona's catcher would be in the dugout applying lipstick and such when Zona was up to bat.....all that femininity but still throwing herself around playing catcher.

I would love to watch a Clemson Softball team. Just bc it would be the most popular women's sport at Clemson doesn't mean it would make money. Clemson is top-10 consistently in baseball attendance. We're on ESPN, and you can watch us online. All that considered our baseball program lost 800,000 more than what it brought in 2010, a year we made the CWS. We took an 800,000 dollar LOSS that year.
Softball has many of those same expenses. Softball would be popular, but it'll lose money. Look at our athletic budget online and please tell me where the millions are to invest in a new facility for that sports.
An option would be to eliminate a couple women's sports and take those budgets to pay for softball, but then you're not in compliance with Title IX.
No matter the popularity of Softball, it'll never make money. The SEC gets to have softball bc they have budgets of 80 million, compared to our 60 million.

Those are cheaper sports to start (Riggs Field is perfect) and the interest is there. Plus lacrosse is a natural fit in the ACC.

Leave the state to go to a school that has a decent program. Most of the ACC schools have a program and its big in the SEC. I'm sure there's some donor $ out there, the administration just needs to open there eyes.

Re: When is Clemson going to get a women's softball team?

Here is the break down from a softball mom/ Clemson Fan. My daughter dreams of playing D1 softball and puts in the hard work and dedication to do so oneday. But guess what, she can not count her favorite team in the pool of schools to be interested in b/c the program does not exsit there. If Clemson would start a womens softball team so many girls could stay closer to home while also supporting their team they love and playing the sport they love as well. For those that say Clemson would lose money, how? Attendance at the school would go up since more girls would be able to attend to play softball. Most women who play sports in college do so with an Academic scholarship "so no money lost there either". BC other athletic scholarships are used by football and other male sports. No money lost there. Yes to initially build a field does cost but over time the school would make their money back.
Womens softbal is one of the fastest growing sports along the east coast. On an average spring and summer season of softball a parent can pay any where from $2000-$5000 for those two seasons. that is not including individual lessons. If a school provides a program that is good and wins divisions and then soon regionals and world series the program grows and brings in more money. All prgrams have to start some where.
