Best Scenario for us to get BCS game
Oct 28, 2012, 11:56 PM
|
|
1. We win out 2. Alabama or K State lose once 3. Notre Dame wins out and gets to title game (doesn't take BCS spot)
There are other ways we get in (Fl State loses another ACC game the most obvious) but I see this as our best shot.
Arguments?

Because if they don't ND will not get in the title game but will be ranked in the top 8 and therefore take an AQ for one of the 4 BCS bowls.

Another thing to take into consideration is...

Boise St will more than likely win out, be in the top 16, and be higher ranked than a conference champion (B1G) Nebraska is #20 right now, and will probably lose again. Boise is #18, so they only need to move up two spots to get an automatic bid.

Boise shouldn't be a problem bein a NQ.

They lost early. They haven't been the media darlings of years passed since they lost early and play in such a weak conference.

3. The champion of Conference USA, the Mid-American Conference, the Mountain West Conference, the Sun Belt Conference, or the Western Athletic Conference will earn an automatic berth in a BCS bowl game if either:
A. Such team is ranked in the top 12 of the final BCS Standings, or, B. Such team is ranked in the top 16 of the final BCS Standings and its ranking in the final BCS Standings is higher than that of a champion of a conference that has an annual automatic berth in one of the BCS bowls.

1 and 2 are also from the same Conf. We can still get in if ND isn't in the title game. Just makes it a little easier is they are. I think the ideal situation would be Alabama and ND in title. That would leave 2 at large

LSU might lose to Bama and Ms St.

But even if they only lose to Bama, they'd have two losses and might not be picked for a BCS spot over Clemson. Also, I think FSU will beat UF and keep them out of a BCS game. So it's not necessarily the case that there will be two SEC teams in the BCS.

There's 10 spots...
Oct 29, 2012, 2:55 AM
|
|
8 of them are already decided with ND all but assured of being in the top 8 and Boise State likely making it because they'll be in the top 16 and finish ahead of whoever the sucky Big 10 champion ends up being.
The final 2 spots will likely go to an SEC team and hopefully Clemson. The only way I would see us coming up short is if Oregon were to lose in their conference championship game or to either Stanford or Oregon State, and Oregon ends up 11-1 and not making it to the Pac 12 title game. An 11-1 Oregon team would likely be selected ahead of us. Oklahoma from the Big 12 is the only other team that seems in contention since they could be 10-2 with their only losses coming to Notre Dame and Kansas State. There will be no Big 10 or Big East #2.
So basically, just cheer for Oregon and against Boise State and Oklahoma from here on out.

And nd will take a slot regardless, you are just moving chairs around the deck. There are 8 slots out of 10 that are for sure right now. 6 conference winners, nd, and a second sec team. We would have one of other two slots if we won out because we will skyrocket in the bcs over the next 4 weeks if we go 11-1.

Nightmare Scenario:
Oct 29, 2012, 3:24 AM
|
|
In no way do I think this will happen, but it is a remote possibility, and why you can't say if we go 11-1 we will definitely get a BCS bowl.
If Oregon loses the Pac-12 title game to USC they will be 11-1. USC automatically goes to the Rose Bowl, while Oregon remains in the top-5.
If Boise State goes undefeated, they will likely get an automatic birth as a top-16 non-AQ that finishes ahead of the Big 10 Champion.
Florida beats FSU and finishes 11-1.
Notre Dame finished in the top 4.
Now you have for the
National Championship Game: (13-0) #1 Alabama vs. (12-0) #2 Kansas State
Sugar Bowl: (12-0) #3 Notre Dame (Replacement Choice #1) vs. Louisville (2nd Pick)
Fiesta Bowl: (12-1) #5 Oregon (Replacement Choice #2) vs. (11-1) #4 Florida (1st Pick)
Rose Bowl: USC (Pac 12) vs. Michigan (Big 10)
Orange Bowl: FSU (ACC) vs. Boise State (3rd pick)
Unfortunately, 1-loss Oregon and Florida teams are more attractive than Clemson, and they would both finish ahead of us.

Not sure why I put Michigan there for the Big 10....should be either Wisconsin or Nebraska.

Something to watch out for though, if USC loses to Oregon
Oct 29, 2012, 3:51 AM
[ in reply to Nightmare Scenario: ] |

this weekend then watch out for Arizona to win that side of the division and go to the Pac-12 CG.
Standings Pac-12 South: USC 4-2 UCLA 3-2 Arizona St. 3-2 Arizona 2-3
Zona's remaining schedule: @ UCLA (week before USC-UCLA game, trap for UCLA) Colorado (1-4) @ Utah (1-4) Arizona St.
I think it's perfectly likely for Arizona to win out, and for Oregon to beat USC this weekend. However, if USC upsets Oregon this weekend no way Oregon loses again in the Pac-12 champ.
One other thing on the Pac-12 though, they still have 3 teams in the top 16 (4, 11, 14), although I think Oregon St. loses to Stanford and Oregon and Stanford also loses to Oregon.
