This is Tim Bourret quality research, here!
While we have had great players and NCAAT success in the past, I’m thinking this is the best team ever. May be too soon to make that call, and perhaps I’m still on the ‘post game high’ from last night’s win, but there is no denying this has definitely been one of the most fun basketball seasons - and Tiger team - to watch in quite some time.
GO TIGERS!

The 89-90 team will always be tough to beat for me.

Elden Campbell, Dale Davis, Sean Tyson, Marion Cash, Derrick Forest and Kirkland Howling were monsters. Even David Young and Wayne Buckingham off the bench were top notch young bloods on that team! Hated UConn ever since that year. I overreacted to their opening kickoff against us because of that tourney game.

Don’t forget about #54 Horace Grant.

No I was just mentioning great Clemson players from those years in the 80’s. Kind of went off topic regarding the best team. ??

'Most successful' doesn't play out this year. I'd be overjoyed to label this squad as such. Best is subjective and ignores the competition of the day...in many instances.

The Ellis team that won regular season Champ in 90 was really good. I remember being at the game when we beat Duke to clinch. Place was full. People sitting in the aisles to watch the game. As I recall Fire Marshall was pissed at The University. That particular Duke team might have been one of the greatest basketball teams ever assembled and we took them down.
I would also put some of Rick Barnes teams ahead of this team. My junior year we ascended to a top 5 ranking. That team was talented across the board. ACC was so much tougher.
This team is good but the quality of basketball in ACC has fallen of some. It’s just a fact.

This team is better than Barnes’ ‘96-‘97 team IMO.

Buckner, McIntyre, and Christie were great, but I’d put Hall, Tyson, and Chase ahead of them in terms of being a talented trio.
Of course, this team needs to prove it in postseason play. I believe they will.
Our Sweet 16 team from ‘17-‘18 was really good with DeVoe, Thomas, and Mitchell. It’s too bad that Grantham got hurt, or that might’ve been our best team ever.

There will be no way of knowing that until we see how this team plays in the post season. It isn't bashing the team to point out that it is the worst strength of schedule Clemson has played since Brownell became coach. It certainly isn't the players fault that the conference went to crap the same season we had a particularly weak non conference schedule. But, it is the worst strength of schedule since the 1967-68 season. It is the worst strength of schedule we've faced since Division 1 had more than 200 teams.
An easy, at a glance, look at our sos over time can be found here:
https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/schools/clemson/
If you want to see where the corresponding SOS ranks us click on the season on the far left of the table. We've currently played the 101st hardest schedule this season. In 1996-97 and 97-98 we played the 8th hardest SOS. Barnes got us to the tourney, back to back, against two of the three toughest schedules we've played in the history of the program. Purnell, in his first season, had the misfortune of playing the hardest ever.
Hopefully this season will allow our team to be confident going into the postseason. There will literally never have been an easier path to the ACC post season title. Regardless of the SOS, that would be a tremendous psychological hurdle for this team to clear. After that, it is likely each game in the NCAA tourney would progressively be the toughest team we will have played this season, regardless of seeding.

One thing I will say is we are peaking in the perfect year with the rest of the acc being down.
I’ll take lucky and good any day of the week!

The 2017 team was doing great things until injuries slowed then down.
Still reached Sweet 16 and played a tough Kansas team really strong.

89-90 team. That team was awesome and played in a loaded ACC. Unless his team makes a monster run this isn’t event debatable.

79-80 final 8 team was the best I saw although I loved the 89-90 team. Tates Lock had some good teams too. The 79-80 team was undefeated at home with Moose Campbell 6-10 center, Horace Wyatt 6-10 F, Larry Nance 6-10 F, Billy Williams G, Bobby Conrad PG. Nance and Wiggins of that team played in NBA.

The team that had Horace Grant and Grayson Marshall on it was awesome-they were #1 seed in Acc Tourney. We lost to #8 Wake Forest because of Grayson Marshall's injury and we could not advance the ball up the court thanks to that pesky Mugsy Bogues.

Pretty sure we’ve only won the ACC regular season once (1990) and that’s how you earn the #1 seed in the tourney.
I believe the team you’re citing although tremendously talented, was #2 or #3 seed.
Horace Grant won our only ACC POY that season, but Marshall’s injury was devastating.
