Why did we hire Brownell?

He only made it to the playoffs his first year at Wright State, a first round exit. The next three years, he missed the playoffs.

He was cheap and Brad understood it would be the best job he’d ever get offered. I’d guess Wright State was as surprised as Brad when Clemson reached out to him

his players find out on Twitter?
It was a business decision he had to do then because he was offere at the Final Four. He had to fly into Chicago then to take the offer. He couldn't fly back to Clemson firstborn, but did come back the next day after his press conference. I saw a video where he was at a meeting with former players and hugging Jerai Grant and Demontez Stitt letting them know he had to take the opportunity because Terry Don Phillips and BOT were slow balling him on new renovations for a bigger Practice Facility and a better contract. Remember this was the days before Zoom calls, and Wifi. Also, all the major coaches who would have been interested in Clemson at the time saw how Clemson was not taking basketball seriously by not handling things correctly with Oliver Purnell. That would not have been the case with Graham Neff or even under DRad.

to keep him, but low balled him with the rationalization that the cost of living was lower in Clemson than Chicago.
That doesn't sound like an AD trying his best to keep a coach around.

Low ball?
DePaul made him a top-10 paid coach at 2.2M.
Depaul gave Oliver Purnell Rick Pitino-level Money. 2.2M per year over 7 years. 2.2 was what UofL was paying Pitino.
OP was paid more than Roy Williams, Bob Huggins and Rick Barnes.
"Low ball is not what 1.3 base, 1.6 actual" We paid for 9-7 in ACC play and a first round NCAA exit isnt Lowball.

Just no evidence rumors, just like the one about Coach Brownell riding around campus in his sports car.
You won't call me a troll if Earl Grant becomes the new basketball coach after Coach Brownell passes along the keys to him with his approval.

Then who was the affair with? Or at least give some concrete details. People have speculated coeds and wives of coaches from different teams over the years. That means it’s a made up coping mechanism

Some Clemson fans can’t fathom that a coach would want to go somewhere besides Clemson, so they soothe their egos by pushing the affair narrative.

CBB was considered a promising young coach at the time as he had been successful at smaller schools. But the overriding factor was budget as CBB was a budget hire. Then and now Clemson wants a successful basketball program but within a budget which does not interfere with spending on other sports (football, baseball, soccer and now softball). There has never been an open the wallet hire for basketball like we just saw for baseball. Cant say i disagree with the strategy as Clemson Basketball is not a destination job so a high dollar successful coach is unlikely stay for long should they see success (see OP and Barnes as examples). Said differently if you had a million bucks to invest in a clemson sport would you spend it on football, baseball, soccer, softball or basketball in terms of ROI? And in case you did not know money at clemson is not unlimited.

Basketball has the highest potential ROI by percentage of any sport at Clemson and it isn't even close. Everything but football and men's basketball are deficit spending. Football revenues are pretty well maximized. Basketball has a ton of potential.

You mean he was the first coach to ever win Wright State a Horizon title from a team that finished 13-15 the year before? That is a good turnaround. He took Wright State to their 2nd ever tournament appearance and kept them in the hunt.
He kept Wright State 20+ wins when you had Brad Stevens Butler come within 2 points of beating Duke in the national championships. Jeeze know the teams on the other side.
Finishing 2nd/tied for 2nd when the other side is Brad Stevens and Butler is fairly darn good.

Seriously? That he appeared to be almost as good (no he didn't, but for the sake of argument what the heck) as Brad Stevens is a reason to hire him? That's possibly the worst defense of Brad Brownell yet.
Imagine Nebraska football: "we'd really like to hire Dabo Swinney as our new football coach"
FutureDoc: "how about Dave Clawson"
Nebraska: "?"
FutureDoc: "He's never actually beaten Dabo Swinney but they did win the division over them once so they're pretty much the same"
Nebraska: "?"

1 Dave Clawson is one heck of a coach. Clawson could rebuild a souless husk that is the Neb. He should be a target for them.
2. Brad Stevens is a "generational" coach. If he stuck at the college game, he would be a major HOF and would likely have a Natty. He did the NBA thing and that is fine but in no way would Stevens consider Clemson as an option. Dang, I am sure he had offers to ditch Butler but it was the Celtics that got him.
My argument is that Brad had Wright State over-performing their norm and it wasn't just a 1 season thing. Finishing 2nd to Butler in 2010 isn't a cone of shame especially with back-to-back title appearances. Nagy which was a great coach also has them at that level.
Oh, and Brad DID beat Stevens and Butler in the Horizon championship in 07.

Yep. I thought it was a decent hire at the time and a purposeful decision by the Admin to shift from Purnell's full court athleticism, which got exposed in NCAA tournament games, to a defensive oriented, possession style game that Stevens and Bennett were putting to great work at their respective schools. Brad fit that mold and made sense at the time.
Unfortunately he hasn't been able to deliver the same success at this level that he had achieved in the Horizon and Colonial. And the style of play, especially when not delivering wins often enough, isn't as inspiring for fans.

Can't disagree. That is spot on.
I think that Brad is still a good coach and can still be successful. At Clemson, not sure. Considering where we were in 2010 (not a good place like some thing) with needed renovations lagging and the investment side of fanbase. He kept the program stable. We could have cratered (see Wake) but remained mid-table. But yes, we are not hitting that next level that we could be. That being said, his teams don't quit and that speaks volumes to a coaches caliber. I still think he is hitting above Clemson's weight but recent years have been and will be very disruptive in the ACC. We are in a good place unlike 2010 and I think the opportunity for the next level is there.

What is your opinion of Earl Grant at Boston College, Doc?
He has done a great job at BC very early. They have 4 starters back and most of their key reserves back, plus a top 20 recruiting class coming in. Hey really got their strive going in the ACCT last season winning two games and a wisker from upending Miami. Remember Earl is from SC, and spent his early coaching carrer in SC before he was hired as the top assistant under Gregg Marshall at Wichita State and Clemson under Brad Brownell. The rumors his dream job is Clemson and has followed the program since the early 80s very hard. He is a tireless recruiter, He would lock up the Upstate and most of the other top players from SC.
I think the PR when Brad and Neff part ways is going to very positive for Coach Brownell. He will get to step down as the winnings coach in Clemson Basketball history, and will thanked by the all important and let the media know what he has done. Coach Brownell could suggest to Neff his opinion, and that is why I think Coach Earl Grant could be a top candidate. If BC has the turnaround season that I think they are going to have Grant will be a huge candidate at SEC teams and fellow ACC teams in the southern footprint area where he is from. Why not Clemson? It could be a similar situation when Tommy Bowdan stepped down and Dabo was hired

I like him and it was a decent risk for BC. I think it was a good decision for them. It was also a good time for him to move from CoC - kinda flatlined. So I am rooting for him - to a point (at BC), but I think it is too early to tell if he can have lasting success in the ACC. I don't put a lot of stock on a run in the ACCT - see Sydney Lowe. They were what, 6-14 last year in ACC play? I think a 8-10 with some OOC wins would be good next step. I don't think a breakthough year has to happen yet, but I want to see improvements and see how his players react when things are sideways.

He will this up coming season. He and his top assistant,Coach Goins have a top 25 class coming in. Also 4 starters back. Terrence Oglesby has them too really climb in the ACC standings just like me.
