B1G would be a good move

Jul 8, 2022, 8:14 AM

I know that most folks here want to see us move to the SEC (and I'm not saying that we shouldn't), but I think that the B1G would be a good move as well. Here's why:

- One of our big recruiting advantages is specifically that we aren't in the SEC. The ACC has a great academic reputation and a different feel than the SEC. We value graduation rates and growing these students to be good people. That advantage could remain intact in the Big 10.

- I see a lot of folks talking about how the SEC cares more about football. I would generally agree, but I recently lived in the midwest for a few years, and was very impressed by how seriously they took football. They have a stupid trophy for pretty much every match-up, which, while stupid, is actually a lot of fun. They have nice campuses and stadiums, and a lot of history/tradition as well. Fans tend to be passionate but not rude (OSU excluded, of course).

- It would REALLY rub SC the wrong way if we were 'too good' for the SEC. This may seem petty, but I'm ok with that.

That's it! SEC would be fine, too, but I think that we could see more success in the B1G.

Thanks for listening.

No thank you. Too cold and too far. Great OOC games but not every year.

And to your point about us having a recruiting advantage because we aren’t in the SEC and the ACC values academics more. That’s just laughable. Recruits choose Clemson because of the culture Dabo has built and how Dabo has instilled a priority in life after football. They aren’t looking around the ACC and say “man the ACC sure loves their academics. I think I’ll choose Clemson” I mean come man.

Its simple math. And I swear, if you want to make yourself sound like a clueless idiot, complain about it being too cold to play in the Big 10. You morans realize football season is in the fall right? Not the dead of winter. Sure, there is a REMOTE chance a late November game could have snow in a FEW of those places. Some of you make it out like we would be playing in the North Pole every game.

80% of your games would be against teams in your pod... you'd only play may 2 or 3 other conference games that would rotate until playoffs where you would play other top teams in their pods.
Because of this, I say...only way I'd go to BIG is if we have go with at least 3 other ACC teams like Fsu, Miami, and VT GT or UNC...and they would be in our pod...we should also get some inclusion in picking other teams in our pod.

The big tens tv deal is actually going to be more than the SEC. That’s not me blowing smoke that’s the reporting . You can’t as an university sit back and make 60-70 million less than Northwestern. The math will crush you over a 5-10 year period . Northwestern just Built a 260 million practice facility. When I toured Clemson in August 2021 I was so impressed with its facilities and location truly amazing but if you’re making 60-70’less than your in state rival and to none traditional powerhouses that’s going to show up on the field given a longer time horizon .

Re: I'm not sure what we are talking about...

Jul 8, 2022, 9:50 AM [ in reply to I'm not sure what we are talking about... ]

Ok let me explain how cable television and streaming works with live sports . There is “in market rates” and “out of market rates” if you live in Bloomington Indiana the big ten makes roughly $1.25 dollars per sub . If you lived in auburn Alabama and for whatever reason wanted the big ten network the big ten would make a $1 . The reason for this is straightforward- the cable provider/ streaming service can bundle more products with the big ten network attached to it in Bloomington cause you are more likely to want the network there than auburn Alabama the same holds for sec network . Although the sec gets more per sub and actually has proven to get better rates and same rates in neighboring markets that are in immediate locations

I was wondering why USC and UCLA moved...

Jul 8, 2022, 10:02 AM [ in reply to Re: I'm not sure what we are talking about... ]

It's because people in LA are really into the B1G and are more likely to bundle. But Clemson, or FSU/Miami for that matter, won't get into the SEC "Although the sec gets more per sub and actually has proven to get better rates and same rates in neighboring markets that are in immediate locations" because people in South Carolina, and more specifically people who follow Clemson nationally (top 10 in viewership) are less likely to follow the SEC and thus won't bundle.

Got it.

whole is greater than the sum of its parts But there is a law of diminishing returns as well and that’s where Clemson finds itself no one can deny how successful on the field clemson has been. But can Clemson add enough $ to warrant being added to the SEC? Is adding Clemson worth 80-100M annually in extra revenue ???

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Now you are throwing around "law of diminishing returns"...

Jul 8, 2022, 11:25 AM

when the B1G just add two schools from the exact same town. By the way, Clemson is 9th in viewership, USC is 16th, and UCLA is 32nd. Please select a reason Clemson won't be a good fit and stick with it.

And your relevance will fade over time .you’re being stubborn and investing in typewriters and the PC is coming to market . The good news is don’t worry the big ten won’t take you. If you went for free they would turn you down. The bad news is how much does Clemson actually add to tv revenue by joining the sec . And folks if you take the 538 data analysis or the NYT you are not getting into the sec as you don’t add enough eyeballs . Sec doesn’t need more teams that are good at football they want more population centers . Oklahoma wouldn’t of gotten in without Texas . Texas A and M is the sole reason the SEC network was created . Don’t believe me as the former commish of the sec . It’s population centers it’s tv markets . Does two sec teams in South Carolina truly make sense strategy wise when you are in a tug of war with the big ten for every nickel or does adding virgina and unc to huge population centers were you don’t have a foothold make more sense ? I think the former SEC commish must be stumped by actual facts. I'm detecting a stanky turtle showing its true colors, btw.

How much $$$ do we get in B1G vs $EC?
I ask because apparently it is ALL about the $$$ these days.

Estimates is USC is getting 60 to 70 more to move to the big ten . Acc contract and the acc network are better than the pac 12s . My research’s says 10 million better . So let’s take the ACC 990 IRS document . I reviewed that. I stand by the 10-15 estimate per school . Apply that to the big ten current deal and Clemson is making less about 18-20 million . Now apply to the current deal being reported ? It’s 60-75 million less . That’s what’s causing all of this . How can a school as successful on the field as Clemson just sit back and make that much less ? It can’t . Add in the contract doesn’t end until 2036 the big ten will re-up twice since the acc signed the deal .

The average distance of away games would be ridiculous. I don’t think our recruiting is helped by not being in the sec. We recruit well in spite of not being in the sec. I don’t think kids from the south would be interested in the b1g. Clemson’s academic standard is not a conference standard and would not be effected. Most of the schools I’d want us to schedule are in the sec.

Clemsons bottom line income statement doesn’t have a “ tailgating “ line. That will hold little to no decision making relevance . They won’t care that fans can’t drive to road games . They will publicly pander but won’t actually care. Yes traveling would be more expensive but like a half a billion more expensive? No . Your only lifeboat to remain a dominate force in college athletics is the SEC . Although I have a soft spot for Clemson I don’t think it benefits the SEC to add you.

Well, get over yourself because we are going to the SEC, Mr. "Commish".

It benefits the SEC to keep a monopoly of southeastern college football. Also, forget the SC tv market, and think national ratings. Clemson will bring a boost to the Big or SEC. And ESPN and Fox know this. Clemson just needs to strike while the iron is hot.

You're using older agendas to try and explain current events. It doesn't calculate. TV markets don't matter anymore, no more than radio markets matter to XM.

The B1G will add Oregon, Washington and likely Stanford. At that point the hand of ND will be forced and they'll have to join the B1G. The SEC absolutely cannot afford to to allow even the tiniest of risks to allow Clemson and UNC to fall to the B1G in the race to 24. Clemson, FSU and UNC (and likely Oklahoma State) will end up in the SEC.

You have to add more $ then you cost . So far the big ten doesn’t believe Oregon adds more $ than it costs that could change but the big ten said it’s waiting in notre dame .

This is why teams join in 2s or 3s. The addition of multiple teams moves the needle of these contracts in a way that increase them beyond the individual payout of each team. Oregon/Washington/Stanford does that. Clemson/FSU/UNCorMiamiorUVA does that. It's not about markets anymore. It's about the teams that can generate viewership and put eyes on ads.

Not to mention the future massive contract that is forth coming for an expanded playoffs and the SEC and B1G want as many teams as possible to make that field to get as many pieces of that pie. It's now a race.

We're not an AAU school. The only school the B1G will take that's not AAU is ND.

Nebraska got booted from the AAU in 2011 cause it lost its medical research grant . Jim Delany swears Nebraska would of gotten in without it but I seriously doubt it. It was a black eye to the college presidents who are the only ones who actually vote . Clemson is a great academic school but doesn’t have the aau . I really like Clemson I just fundamentally think you all are being very naive .

I also prefer Big 10 over SEC.

Either seems to be much better than staying in the ACC though.

For the record I am not a fan of all of this . It cheapens the great sport . But I didn’t create the rules
