Just out of curiosity, do you think our offense

Sep 7, 2021, 3:01 PM

needs:

A. No changes. We just need to give our young players time to adjust to their bigger roles.
B. Some changes. Our scheme generally works well, but a few adjustments here and there are needed.
C. Significant changes. What we do isn't close to working.
D. A complete overhaul. We need to basically start over.

Assuming we are talking football since on the football bored but I’d go with B.
But if we’re talking basketball I’d go with C, that or bring in some mid-major transfers to make me think we are doing something when we really aren’t.

Significant changes. We have not been good vs good defenses since Jeff Scott left and I think the most annoying part is that we have the players to have an elite level offense. We obviously need a bigger OL but the play calls are awful and our scheme is substantially too simple which causes us to struggle a lot when we are equally talented as another team but we win most games because we're just plain better than mostly everyone else. Tony Elliot needs to figure out some things or Dabo needs to make changes with him and Caldwell. Both are great guys I'd hate to see leave but it's Dabo's job to make sure best is the standard not better than most is the standard.

C.

The problem is what we do works in the ACC, but it doesn't work against elite defenses anymore. Our conference masks a lot of our issues.

How I would fix our offense:
1. Fire Robbie Caldwell

2. Have more WR routes like slants and mesh routes. Attack the middle of the field more often. Our routes are high school level when compared with OSU and Bama

3. TE needs to be more creative and know how to adjust when things aren't working. He needs to stop abanoning the run as well. Perhaps we should hire a new passing game coordinator like LSU did in 2019.

Overall, our offense has been left in the dust when comapred with Bama, OSU, and OU.

I'm going to agree with bringing in a proven, but younger O Line coach, but I don't agree with firing Robbie Caldwell, I would allow him to hang around at some capacity like was done with Danny Pearman. Robbie Caldwell is a good man, and I wouldn't embarrass the man by firing him. I would do something like what was done with Pearman. It's not Robby's fault that he has gotten old, and I would allow him to step down, and take another precision if he would want to stay, and continue being a part of the Clemson FB program....

our offense needs some "fresh eyes".........

Sep 7, 2021, 3:16 PM

not even saying to Replace TE as OC, but some fresh eyes OUTSIDE THE PROGRAM from an offensive perspective that may be somewhere in between a B & C.

even if it's a passing/running game coordinator..........SOMETHING needs to be looked at.

Brandon Streeter is supposedly the passing game coordinator for the team!!!

C. Just looks like we were out talenting teams

Sep 7, 2021, 3:27 PM

with guys like TL, ETN, DW, Higgins, Rogers, etc... not out scheming them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we haven't even done that the last 2 years in playoffs......

Sep 7, 2021, 3:30 PM

all that talent and scored 25 & 28 points.

it works with our ACC schedule.

In TE’s simple scheme, the QB has to be a capable runner of things get ugly fast. We quickly can’t run it and become one dimensional. DJ has got a great arm and big body, I just don’t think he has the mobility to pull it off. Our QB needs 7 or 8 called runs and the ability to scramble for positive yards on 2 or 3 pass plays a game. So, we need to take a hard look at the roster and see if anyone fits the bill. By mid season , Will Taylor may be the best option!!

1. Our offense is too predictable. Over the last 4 years it has not evolved. That's a coaching issue. As a member of the press, I have lots of friends in the industry who know more about this sport than I ever will, but next week, a report is coming out that calculates every play each top 25 team has called in the last 3 years, and how often they've called them. I know the reporter, and he's shared ONE thing with me that I'll share here (w/ his permission). The report will show the teams # of plays and/or wrinkles in their scheme. Guess who sits at #22.... yup. Us.

2. Our offense has been dynamic, but not physical at the line. That's a coaching issue (recruiting, development and scheme.) Disagree? Show me a year were our total rushing was in the top 5 in Yds p/game. Not all-purpose yards... rushing. Go ahead, I'll wait.

3. Saturday was embarrassing. If you weren't embarrassed you're not a fan. None of us get paid to figure out the issue, much less fix it. But we dang sure should hold those who do accountable.

4. Our Offense is not growing as a unit.

5. People who say those who complain about our team aren't real fans, are actually the true defectors. As any good communist knows, one of the first steps to bring down an empire is to trick the people into accepting the decline of expectations, one small backwards step at a time. We need to stand as a fan base, cheer for our Tigers, pull for them win or lose, but demand excellence. Or to put it more democratically; Proverbs 24 warns us: "If you do nothing in a difficult time, your strength is limited..."

I didn't pick one of your options... because the answer is DO SOMETHING!

As bad as it pains me to say things like this bc it's not at all who I am, especially when I feel that I had to finally admit it to myself, but, I think that it's time for Dabo to give serious thought about bringing in a good, but younger, O Line coach that can relate to these kids on their level!!!!

Re: Just out of curiosity, do you think our offense

Sep 7, 2021, 3:45 PM

A moderate revamp of sorts, but that has to be internal.

I think there was a big gap between what TE wanted to do, what DJ was able to do in that game. That gap was fairly big. Worse, it seemed more like we had a "back up" with limited time with the first team than a known starter. I felt like DJ was trying to be TL16 in year 3 rather than TL in year 1.

Poor play with a a bad initial game plan and the adjustments were just so-so to poor.

DJ just was not reading the defense fast enough (credit jawja for creating confusion), we was over-thinking and not on the same page with the rest of the team. Even his problems with snaps was basically him over-thinking/watching coverage. At a point in time, you need to simplify and add "space" for DJ. Some of his better moments were rolling out of the pocket... where he had to react more than think more. Adding/trying rushing to the edge might have also help because it was just waiting to long in the pocket and making bad plays.

Here is the trick, we know that TE can work within the limits of a QB. See Stoudt. DJ was playing stiff, not seeing the field (seeing roadblocks, not opportunities) and I don't think anyone on the staff was expecting that. The complete opposite actually since DJ was fairly loose at other times. Lastly, we have to be more creative with a more diversified running option. Forcing DJ to make throws when he isnt even coming close to receivers is an issue. A 2-3y gain and a chance at breaking out is better than a 10 yard off pass.

C. TE has got to go. Should have never been there in the first place and then should have been gone before now. It's too late for this season but he needs to go and take that OL coach with him and go get some new faces. This isn't the Boy Scouts or some social club. This is a business. If we worry about hurting someone's feelings then that's exactly what our problem is. I just think we have gotten too...."nice". Probably the best word I can find. This is the wrong business to be in to be nice. Look at Sabin, everyone that's not a Bama redneck hates him. And he loves it.

I say E as in too early to tell.
However I did not like the way the Georgia "D" pushed around our "0-line".
I didn't like how our receivers ran their routes, or could not get a lot of separation.
I didn't like how D.J. did not drop farther back.
I didn't like the play calling or the lack of a rushing attack.
I didn't like that there never seemed to be any sense of urgency as the game progressed.
I didn't like that our offensive coaching staff didn't sit D.J. for at least 1 series to settle him down.
Now here in lies the problem; S.C. State.
Knowing how Dabo will probably call off the wolves at the end of the 3rd quarter, how many points does the offense have to score to keep the crowd for wanting more blood. I say 70.

Re: Just out of curiosity, do you think our offense

Sep 7, 2021, 7:08 PM

I don't know the answer, but the team is too talented and the coaching staff has been together too long to make it acceptable to be this bad on offense against anyone.

Why weren't there in game adjustments to find SOMETHING that worked?

and seeing all that green grass in front of the QB and him taking sacks is infuriating.

If he just tooks a few of those runs, we kick 3 more field goals and win 12-10.

We were in field goal range after the interception and close to it after the punt recovery.

E. Adjust routes to where defenders aren't. Our routes have sucked since Morris left. The middle of the field was WIDE OPEN ALL NIGHT Saturday.....It was open when we played OSU. I don't understand why we don't do there. The argument that our receivers are "too tall and rangey" is beyond ridiculous. When we did go over the middle, it worked.....but of course Elliot stopped what was working. Instead we do back shoulder throws to the sidelines in double coverage and screens to Ross.
