This was tough to read. Unfortunately, it feels like we are on the steady decline. The cracks are becoming more apparent every year. The fact that the team got worse with Trevor Lawrence at QB was the obvious indication.

2018: National champs
2019: Blown out in the natty
2020: Blown out in the semi-finals
2021: No playoffs

It's obvious, isn't it? The decline is happening. It was happening with one of the most talented QBs of all time and the best RB in school history. Breaking up this coaching staff has to happen. Tony Elliot and Robbie Caldwell have to go. Signing players from the transfer portal is a must. The gap is closing because everyone else is bringing in transfers that have immediate impacts. Those two things have to happen in order to save this thing.

If Boston College had their starting QB, we'd be 2-3 heading into Syracuse tonight. The decline is happening. I don't want to end up like FSU, USC, Texas, and Nebraska.

New blood on the offensive coaching side. Period.

Tony Elliot and Robbie Caldwell have to go. I would also seriously consider letting go of Streeter as well. Spiller and Grisham can stay. I do not believe those two are the issue.

Spiller can go too. Zero coaching experience and ran off Lynn J Dixon.

I agree and disagree....I think it's a combination of things

Oct 15, 2021, 9:12 AM [ in reply to Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, its a quick fix ]

We have both Small picture & Big picture issues

Small picture: Oline (small & big b/c it's been an issue for years), zero WR separation, DJ's been off, playcalling has been stale & predictable, admit it or not our talent isn't what it was.......that leads to the big picture items.

Big picture:
-coaching staff nepotism: you played here? you get a job, you have son in HS? he gets a schollie, you work hard, but lack true talent? you get a schollie. You're a legend and you have a son in HS? you get a schollie. This has gone on for a while, but it's no longer masked b/c our depth is being depleted by the portal and you actually see some of these players hit the field more than you used to.

-zero innovation/refusal to change: hard headed coaching staff of sticking by the "CLEMSON WAY". I love the clemson way, but you have to adjust/adapt. You have to change with the times. Just because the Clemson way worked in 2016 doesn't mean it works now. I'm not saying not have a culture or a process unique to Clemson, but it does have to be tweaked, adjusted, molded to fit the time. We've rested on our laurels expecting the same results by NEVER CHANGING. You used to hear of our staff going out to Nevada to learn the pistol or somewhere out in Texas to learn some different concepts, that hasn't happened in a while.

-Portal: obviously beating a dead horse, but the longer Dabo refuses to utilize the portal the quicker our decline gets expedited. It hasn't been an issue until about 3 years ago. When we lose a player to the portal we DON'T replace them with the portal we either depend on the next recruiting class (which will cause us to ALWAYS be young) OR....and this may be worse we hand a schollie to some hard working practice squad caliber player from Daniel High School. I urge you to go read David Hood's FB post a few weeks ago.....I doubt he'll ever make that a tnet article for he may get black-balled by Dabo if he did, but it's very thought provoking, insightful, and no orange colored glasses were involved......just hard truth and analyzation of the last few years of roster management.

Dabo's extremely smart and a great coach, but his biggest strength AND weakness could be his stubbornness ......... and that's a weakness right now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Going to have a hard time convincing me its a talent issue

Oct 15, 2021, 9:21 AM

When every saturday I watch teams with 2-3* talent march up and down the field with creative and effective scheme and play calling tailored to the players they have. We are not doing that with 4-5* players and its coaching, period.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

should've worded it as talented depth........

Oct 15, 2021, 9:38 AM

our surface talent is still solid..........as of now. The portal has strained the depth of EVERY TEAM in the country, it's how you adapt and adjust to the portal that will determine our fate moving forward.

Oct 15, 2021, 9:45 AM [ in reply to I agree and disagree....I think it's a combination of things ]

Before the 2019 season we went to Iowa State to learn about their 3 lineman system on defense, which has been used a lot since. The following two offseasons have been impacted by COVID so traveling was not really an option.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

defense isn't what i was referring to........

Oct 15, 2021, 9:51 AM

The reason we're in this position is b/c our offense can't score and there are MULTIPLE reasons why. I think BV does a great job of staying "cutting edge" and not thinking just b/c it worked in 2016 it's going to work in 2021.............the same can't be said for the offensive side of the ball. We've seen this coming since 2019 LSU...........LSU's defense that year was 30-40th in scoring defense........we scored mid 20s on them with the #1 draft pick QB & arguably the best RB in the country that year.

we follow that up with an abysmal offensive performance vs OSU the following year by scoring 28 on their 40th-ish ranked defense.

NOT GOOD

Oct 15, 2021, 9:36 AM [ in reply to Re: Article worth a read: Why Clemson is struggling, and why.... ]

seeing coaches' kids get meaningful snaps now and dozens of walk-ons get scholarships while Dabo decries the transfer portal is frustrating.

I know it pisse$ people off on TNET to question the great Dabo or TE and I get it but that whole transfer portal argument during Dabo's last press conference was absolutely devoid of any real logic.

It's stubbornness, likely and Dabo will have some tuff decisions to make after this season is over, no doubt.

Re: Good points up and down....

Oct 15, 2021, 11:03 AM

It's frustrating given how much the transfer portal has impacted college football. We have to adapt to this monumental change. We can't keep getting out-recruited by the other major P5 teams that also bring in immediate impact players from the portal. We'll get buried in talent. And other ACC teams will close the talent gap with transfer portal players.

problems...

"The problem is, this year's personnel aren't doing the basics nearly so well, and Clemson has been slow to adapt. What used to be a pick-your-poison offense is now a simplistic scheme without a second gear."

"Meanwhile, development at the receiver position has been nominal the past few seasons, and now the scheme that worked so well with a star-studded cast during Clemson's six-year playoff run suddenly looks anachronistic."

"Their offensive line play is hurting more than their running back play," one ACC coach said. "Etienne was a great player, but there's a lot of runs where he wasn't touched until he's in the second level, and you're not seeing that right now."

"... the struggles on offense have sparked debate among Tigers fans about the insular makeup of the Tigers' larger staff, and whether Swinney's emphasis on culture has come at the expense of innovation."

"Swinney has created a particularly insular approach to his staff, encouraging a promote-from-within hiring practice that has maximized culture but limited external influence. Of the 10 on-field assistants, seven graduated from either Clemson or Swinney's alma mater, Alabama. Seven assistants have never coached at another FBS program prior to their time at Clemson..."

Dabo has been on cruise control since 44-16. There’s been no change to the offense in years. Also, it’s ridiculous how many scholarships he’s wasted on kids that have no business being on a roster this talented.

Will he fix it? This off-season will tell us everything.

Re: Article worth a read: Why Clemson is struggling, and why....

We’re headed for a stretch of 7-5, 8-4 type seasons. This is a long term fix that may not correct itself until major coaching changes are made. I keep hearing about all the talent we have but I think we aren’t as talented as the star ratings show, and it’s about to get worse. Welcome back to the Tommy Bowden days.

Next year's DB class will probably be Clemson's best ever as far as ratings... No need for a safety from the portal.

I’m not sure. I haven’t looked.

I’m sure there are some hidden gems in there but if you’re in the portal there is obviously a reason you didn’t work out with your last team. Look at the guys that have left Clemson. If my memory serves me well they left because they felt they could get more playing time or be the starter some where else. How has that worked out for any of them?

I know you’ll point to DK or maybe even Lyn-J but these guys were discipline issues and Clemson coaches will never let the players run the show like they did at FSU. That’s a quick way to loose your program all together.

If you didn’t recruit a guy that is in the portal why would you suddenly want him now? I guess he could have improved since he left high school but if he is improved he’d probably be playing and wouldn’t be in the portal.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How has it worked out for ANY OF THEM?

Oct 15, 2021, 10:30 AM

Seriously?

Well, we lost one RB starting for Wisconsin while we burn a redshirt for a freshman RB on second team.

We lost one who started at DB against us on one of the best, if not THE best defenses in the country. Who incidentally held us to negative total points on offense.

I am sure Dixon will be starting somewhere really soon as well

Now let's talk about more teams who used transfers to kick our butts - UGA, LSU, Ohio State, and I guess you can now add NC State to that list.

Melusi left a crowded RB room with a Senior who

Oct 15, 2021, 10:48 AM

just assumed he was going to start, and a fleet of really promising youngsters on campus and coming in.

With a Dixon around, Melusi could see the grass being potentially greener elsewhere. He wasn’t necessarily wrong.

If Dixon ha gone ahead and transferred as soon as he knew ETN was coming back, I’d wager Melusi is still at Clemson and starting.

ETN started the dominoes falling by returning unexpectedly.

Dixon hanging around probably accelerated things.

Melusi was a bad loss, but he pulled the trigger early and I can see his reasoning.
