Are we a top five team?

The perception of top 5 team has changed tremendously over the last decade. Yes we are most certainly a top five team. The new normal is two teams miles ahead of the rest and about 7 teams with little to no separation making up the top ten. This is the entire basis for the playoffs. There were one or two great teams and a whole slew of pretty good ones. I think we are a pretty good team. The top 5 ranking is purely based on our last five years and not just this year. Look at Kentucky are they a top 7 team. I think they are pretty good. But compare the two programs over the last 5 years and Clemson gets preference points. Same for USC. I think Clemson would beat both those teams right now. So when people say we don’t look like a top 5 team, understand “top 5 team” doesn’t mean what it used to mean. It just means they have been pretty good and are pretty good again.
Only if we become great again will we be ranked 1 or 2. And to be the best you have to beat the best. and to beat the best you have to beat everyone else first. 4-0 is a great start to that.

The definition of top 5 has changed? I could have swore it meant top 5 or the first 5 . Huh.
Of course there is a Supreme Court Justice that can’t define a Woman or a female is so who knows.

what i’m referring to is not so literal. Yes we are ranked 5th in the polls. But I hear people say we don’t belong at number 5 based on our performance or whatever. My post was meant to explain why being ranked number five doesn’t hold the same weight as it used to say 10 or 20 years ago.

You don’t need to be a top 5 team in September or October. If you’re undefeated and top 5 in November, you’re golden.
And Dabo’s five season goals are in chronological order. The 5th is the LEAST important in terms of the success of the season. No team should be judged by whether or not it wins a national championship. The odds are so remote as to make it meaningless. Remember what Danny F said about championships!

Michigan is ahead of us because they've blown teams out. We'll be ranked at least at 4 after next week if we beat NC State

I would say so based off our personnel(recruiting).
I would also offer this to you based on your comments @Op Looking at Alabama and how they struggled with Texas are they a top 5 team? Texas just lost to Texas Tech who btw got beat by ACC foe NC ST. Alabama was fortunate to win that by a point.
Georgia struggled with Kent State a sub .500 Kent State "at home". They also looked just okay vs. Samford.
Ohio State has been given a bunch of credit for there big win in which they struggled at home vs. Notre Dame. But, wait. ND has lost at home against SBC Marshall. And, the Irish was holding their own for a while with the bucknuts.
Who have they played besides ND? And, if ND was your best competition how do we know how good they are?
So, yes! We are as good as anybody else for number 5.

I know some were saying Oklahoma (lost in upset) and Southern Cal (won in comeback against crappy Oregon State), but they haven't shown anything. We are as legitimately top 5 as anyone, and the best is yet to come. Mark this.
