Our first spotlight goes to #27 Jack Purkerson. He is a redshirt junior WR for the 2025 Clemson Tigers.
He is/was a “Student coaching assistant who has walked on for each of the last two springs”.
Jack went to Daniel High School in Central, S.C. He is a “Biological sciences major … born April 9, 2004 … completed a microinternship at Elliott Realty in Myrtle Beach in spring 2025.”.

- HC Tommy West is relieved of his duties during the week of the Gamechicken game. West officially leaves with a win over the Chickens.

“The 1998 Clemson Tigers football team represented Clemson University as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) during the 1998 NCAA Division I-A football season. Led by Tommy West in his fifth and final season as head coach, the Tigers compiled an overall record of 3–8 with a mark of 1–7 in conference play, tying for eighth place in the ACC.”

“Sept. 19, 1998 – Antwan Edwards became the first Clemson player in history to have two runs of at least 80 yards in the same game. The All-America defensive back had a 93-yard fumble return for a touchdown, longest in Clemson history, and an 85-yard kickoff return in a 20-18 loss at Virginia. It was Clemson’s first ever loss on Sept. 19th after eight straight wins.
Oct. 31, 1998 – In a 46-39 loss to NC State, Brandon Streeter set the Clemson single-game passing yardage (329) and completion (27) record. He threw three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter. For the first time ever, Clemson had two 100-yard receivers in the same game. Brian Wofford had 9-128 and a touchdown, while classmate Mal Lawyer had 8-100 and two touchdown receptions. Clemson could not overcome the performance of Torry Holt, who had 11-225 and four touchdown catches.
Nov. 12, 1998 – Clemson played host to its first ever ESPN home Thursday night game, a 24-21 loss to a top-25 Georgia Tech team. Georgia Tech scored the winning touchdown with just one minute remaining.
Nov. 18, 1998 – It was announced that the South Carolina game of November 21 would be Tommy West’s final game as Clemson Head Coach.
Nov. 21, 1998 – Clemson beat South Carolina 28-19 in Tommy West’s final game as Clemson coach. The victory, played before a crowd of 84,423, ended a seven game winning streak for the road team in the series, tied for the longest streak of its kind in NCAA history. A highlight of the contest was a 48-yard interception return for a touchdown by Clemson outside linebacker Howard Bartley, who came back to letter as a senior after two torn ACL operations. Tiger fans tore down the goalpost after the game, just the second time in the history of Death Valley that the goalposts came down after a Tiger victory. Coach West, his wife, Lindsey, and son, Turner, were carried off the field at game’s end.
Dec. 2, 1998 – Tommy Bowden was named Clemson Head Football Coach.
Dec. 5, 1998 – Former South Carolina Head Coach Brad Scott was hired as Clemson’s assistant head coach under Tommy Bowden. Scott was also hired to coach the tight ends.”

Usually, the season-ending rivalry is filled with bad jokes and bad attitudes among the half-crazed fans. But this season, bad football and the coaches’ futures were about the only topics discussed.
The Tigers settled things Wednesday, firing West and setting ablaze whispers that Tulane’s Tommy Bowden, Virginia Tech’s Frank Beamer or even Clemson’s national championship icon, Danny Ford, would soon prowl the sidelines.”

Thanks. Interestingly the 3 teams Clemson beat that year had a collective record of 9-24. With Forman having the most wins at 5, Maryland had 3 and the coots only had 1 win.

He made more than one. His first hire of Brad Scott ended up giving us 2 national championships. No Brad Scott, no Jeff Scott. It's easy to rewrite history 20 years later. But one could make the argument that Brad Scott was perhaps the best hire he did make. Dabo leaned on Brad a ton in the beginning.
The TB years turned our program around and put us in the national spotlight. He paved the way for Dabo to be able to recruit a wider footprint, especially Florida. So I would highly disagree that the TB years were not great.

They were not bad years, but overall, they were not great on the field (69-42). And, yes, he made more than one good hire, but I wasn't trying to include the entire history of his hires during his run. The comment was not meant to reflect badly on them.

2 good things came from that year. We beat the Coots, and we got rid of T West. We'll 3 things actually. We picked up B Scott and got his recruiting skills to work for us in Florida.

That Furman game was one of the hottest games that I have ever attended (not as hot as the Texas A&M game a few years back, but still blazing!)
