Anyone have a solar generator/portable power station?

Our power has been...not as reliable as we're accustomed to lately. Obviously this is the fault of yankees moving here and developers building houses for them, maybe an occasional drunk/high/texting driver hitting a power pole. It's really starting to impact my blood parrot fish Mr. Pablo, I'm worried about the power going out and not being able to run his heater and filter. There's also the hundreds, if not thousands of dollars of groceries we have in freezers, security cameras, family entertainment, etc. but those are secondary concerns.

I'm looking at the Jackary 1000 primarily because it's orange and I can make jack off jokes about it. Bluetti looks like they have some nice units though. I like the idea of the solar generator over say, a gas Honda...but would I be better off with a Honda 2000? I anticipate that we will get this thing and go camping, hiking, and all the cool stuff you see people doing on the website. But I also acknowledge those things might not happen either, so it could become a glorified phone charger.

Thanks for your input,
#17

My first thought after you said 'solar generator' was this...

Those Honda inverter generators are nice!

But it’s hard to argue against the Jackery. Because it's orange and you can make jack off jokes about it.

Yes, there are lot of options with the portable generators and battery stations. I've had Goal Zero 1000 for several years and have used it quite a bit camping and running a fridge/freezer and keeping other batteries charged. Mostly keep it charged from 12V outlet cause driving a lot, and occasional use of Honda 2000. I have 200W solar panels but have only tested them. Kinda bulky to drag around camping. Need some of those thin flexible jobs to keep mounted on vehicle.

Sounds like you could also use a whole house generator also for when you are not home and the fish is.

I had not seen the Goal Zero's, thanks

I wonder about those solar panels too, in reality I could always go charge it in the truck or something.

I like Mr. Pablo, but dropping $10k on a whole home generator for him probably isn't in the cards.

I'd get a beefier one, that's more traditional

ALSO, it would take an electrician, or if you're Facebook Coach who needs an electrician, but install a switch in your fuse box to isolate the house, then run a line to an external female RV outlet on the side of the house (you can do this with any generator). You can then flip the fuses you want on for the house, up to the limit of the wattage on the generator. Kitchen and garage for fridges, the office for PC, etc. And even run a window AC unit. Gas logs for heat. You're basically set. Generator below is the same price as the one you mentioned, just 4 times as powerful. Fill up a couple of 5 gallon gas cans, and if you have 4-5 LP gas cans laying around you'd get days of power.

PS - This is for your house, not tailgating or camping, or whatever.

I have a small jackery unit that I love.

Well, actually I have two now because I bought an additional one.

I got it when I dude I follow on Twitter who is a tech reviewer/prepper said he left one in the toolbox of his truck for about a year, going through the temp highs and lows, and it didn't lose charge.

Neighbor has one, not sure the brand, and said it worked well during a couple of days the power was off earlier this year.

I think there's was close to $2k with the unit and solar panels.

I've considered it but am concerned about longevity of the unit.

I've seen reviews with "worked fine the first time but 6 months later I tried to use it and it was dead."

Not sure what type of warranty they have or how well they honor it but I'd be checking those really closely.
