Anyone feel like things are about to get weird?

Apr 19, 2021, 7:31 AM

The convergence of events over the last couple of years seems to be coming to an inflection point. It’s the off-season, so it is just something to think about it. Here are some of those events,

External Events:
Transfer portal
One time no sit out rule
Name, image, likeness (NIL)

Internal Events:
Developmental program
Team oriented approach
Excellent recruiting
Competitive depth

Ok - how could this could together? Not just at Clemson but across the college football landscape. It seems that there might be a new component of post-Spring free agency recruiting. After these guys get a feel for where they sit after the spring but before the transfer deadline, there might be several guys that chose to leave for other opportunities. This isn’t great for Clemson, Clemson has a program built on commitment and delayed gratification. It just takes time to blossom here for a lot of players.

Also, NIL can be problematic for Clemson. GT is giving players access to all photos and videos (800+ per practice) so they can use it for branding. GT is enabling players to brand themselves by using their production team, essentially. If Clemson falls behind the curve here, it could hurt in recruiting (eg Korey Foreman did consider this in choosing SC).

Just some food for thought on a Monday. I think Dabo et al will figure it out but there is for sure a paradigm shift coming. And it could be here as soon as the next few weeks... what are y’all’s thoughts?

Hope everyone has a good week!

At this point we're doing ok with guys who are team players rather than seeking personal advantage. I would have to consider that GT may need any edge they can manage in recruiting.

Agreed - in the short term. Part of my concern is long term. If other programs take the GT approach, it might lead to some friction down the road in recruiting. I guess we will have to wait and see if GT is the signal or the noise on this point.

All of the 4 and 5 star players who come to Clemson are

doing it for a personal advantage. They want a chance to make it to the NFL, and hopefully play in some big games along the way. That's not to say that they can't also be team players, especially since Dabo & Co. do a great job getting high character players. But let's not forget that their main objective is furthering their own dreams and goals. Everything else is secondary.

Transfer portal; Clemson will get richer

Apr 19, 2021, 12:04 PM

I suspect NIL will actually surge IPTAY, but make no mistake, the best players in the portal will end up at the best programs more often than not.

That means Clemson, Ohio State & Alabama are likely to step out even further from the rest of the competition in the sport. If a kid shines at Bowling Green, he's not transferring to NC State, for example. In all sincerity, I think once Clemson starts using the transfer portal it's going to be an enormous disparity & quickly. Weird times, for sure.

It may benefit clemson greatly. And me. I will

Apr 19, 2021, 3:13 PM

Save money.

I donate to iptay to help the athletes because they cant work to pay their way thru school like I was able.

If they can make their own money, they don't need mine.

Couldn't agree more.

The problems is most of them can't by nature, including with the NIL stuff.

Iptay lets you choose where your money goes. I may designate it to the women's row team.

Man, IF Georgia Tech or any other program in the league starts to improve because of NIL in 2 years I'm all for it!
Without legitimate competition we simply don't control our own destiny to the CFP or the Heisman & more, however the only thing that would surprise me is if Clemson "falls behind the curve." In fact, Clemson's A/V dept. is world-class, in all sincerity. I wouldn't be surprised if Clemson actually becomes the litmus test for NIL stuff by nature.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think it's already gotten weird.

Apr 19, 2021, 12:31 PM

My concern is that many of these changes are so drastic that they will irreversibly change the landscape of college football at the Power Five level.

Our advantages at Clemson are that Dabo is not only an outstanding leader and visionary, but that he is able to carefully consider situations and quickly adapt when necessary. So I am confident that we will adapt as a program as much as we can.

Sadly, I think we will soon be dealing with many players transferring out of Clemson who see greener grass elsewhere. Some of these transfers will be anticipated, while others won't. The fact that players can easily enter the portal and go somewhere else without having to sit out a year will make it very challenging to maintain stability on a roster. We are already seeing it in college basketball, and it makes things really hard.

The advantage is that it also allows the ability to address roster needs quickly. When it comes to Clemson football though, it will really test both the ability of our coaches as well as the players who are transferring in to be brought up to speed quickly. Both our system and our culture are unique, and my hunch is that these aren't concepts which can be grasped after just a couple of weeks of practice and meetings.

Some of it is already happening

"I think we will soon be dealing with many players transferring out of Clemson who see greener grass elsewhere."

We've seen that here at Clemson already, including with 5-star talent.

What we haven't seen or even allowed is the opposite; for players to come into Clemson & for Clemson to be the "greener grass."

I think this new rule will instead make the rich get richer, so to speak. That absolutely includes Clemson, and very few others by nature. We can go undefeated in the league again this year without having to have a stacked roster... but we have it anyway.

I hate more that the team is so elite but has so few opportunities to prove it or earn hardware and even the playoff isn't fully in our control until another top team or ND loses. The portal, though, won't affect that, and if it does it will likely make it more disparate as I mentioned. Time will tell, I suppose.

Players who are borderline on talent and pick a college based on being able to better market themselves are likely not All-In with the team concept.

Maybe those players will make their team a challenger for a year or two, but as others have mentioned, I think the blue bloods will be minimally affected.

Also, aren't there way too many players in regards to the number of potential sponsors? Take last year for example. Say TL, Etienne, Rodgers, and a couple others were able to get sponsors. Multiply that by the number of teams who are actually good and on TV every weekend.

What happens after all of the main sponsors have plenty of representation? Random backup QB Joe Blow from Southeast North Carolina A&T University Technical Community College School of Phoenix University going to get a sponsor or clout or whatever the goal is?

I could see this evolving into the rich get richer. Imagine you’re a top tier QB, OUs Spencer Rattler for fun, and you see that OSU is a QB away from having a special season - maybe you jump ship to have a shot at winning a national championship. He could declare by July and be the starter in the fall without penalty. Add in that your NIL value probably increases when you’re with an elite championship contending team, and it becomes even more appealing. Could turn the spring/summer into essentially free agency. Not just for people being beat out for starting jobs, like normal, but guys looking to jump to more visible jobs.

It’ll be interesting to watch and see how all of this plays out. But I think a pretty sharp event of punctuated equilibrium is coming. Maybe I’m just thinking about it wrong.

To be clear, sponsors for NIL stuff aren't all Nike & Geico is all.

For example, if Gilstrap Honda wants to pay a guy to come out for a day, they can (not exactly but you get the idea). They're not all going to be million-dollar sponsors, and in fact most of them are going to be much more inconsequential by nature. It will be a different world outright, for what it's worth.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it will make the total product suffer - downhill trend ahead

Apr 20, 2021, 8:18 AM

there's a point where there is TOO much distraction and data to properly process. All this will make teams, coaches, and players less efficient, and continue the trend towards an unwatchable product, like we see with other sports.

Baseball has reached it with the shifts and Trackman and analytics and wristbands, etc. Has all that helped teams play better? Does knowing the pitcher's spin rate help you lay down a bunt? Does knowing the batter's "tendencies" prevent him from hitting a HR off of you? Maybe, but ultimately, probably not.

Watch the quality of football slide down along with everything else.
