Yep. I'm in the design industry too. Think about my decisions all the time. Public safety #1, no compromises. Just always have those calcs to back it up. 
Speaking of which, remember that prefab bridge collapse in florida a few years back? The one that failed while they were swinging it across the freeway. It was basically an enormous truss but it collapsed at one of the end points I think. Ever hear any post mortem on that?

There's an NTSB report on the FL pedestrian bridge collapse. It was showing all sorts of signs of failure before it failed. HUGE cracks. but the remedies they tried to shore it up actually made it worse and caused the failure. you can get into the details if you've got 3 hours below. If I remember, the original design was way under designed, then when it started failing they tried to add post-tensioning to the struts that caused it to fail.

For that florida condo I was thinking there must have been all sorts of finish cracking or surface indications something was going terribly wrong. Assuming no extra load was added, no fire, and it was a 40 year old building a catastrophic collapse is a real mystery.

that would be about 2 people per unit, which would seem about right, figuring some empty, some with 3+.
Gonna be a grisly task when thy start picking up the layers of 12+ floors.

I only have a 50 year old arch degree, but my initial reaction was that the collapse just didn't come out of the blue. I then heard that this building had issues for years ... subsoil problems and detectable sinking every year. Clearly a base structural design issue ... grade beams (?) not enough heft or surface area, or piles (?) not deep enough. Those unaccounted for are not likely to have survived. GOD bless those souls!
