For those of you with ties to York County/Fort Mill…Anne Close has passed away. Can’t think of anyone who has meant more to the Fort Mill area…at least in my lifetime. She will be missed…

Grew up in Ft Mill when textiles and Springs were still

big. Springs was what companies could be to a community. Wage and hour workers sent kids to college, owned their homes and retired with security. Everyone had financial, educational, cultural and recreational opportunities. Any kid growing up in Ft Mill during the 60's/70's had the entire world placed in front of him. Because the big dog in town, Springs, said, "Because this is who we are."
My graduating class had 100 people in it. Reunions are collection of doctors, publishers, lawyers, business owners from all over the country (then there is me). We all know who created the environment for it. Anne Springs Close.

I remember her well. I have been in many foot races with her. She sponsored many in Ft Mill. I have had lots of fun times at her Ft Mill house. All us boys hoped to marry her daughter.
Her Pop (Elliott White Springs) is the reason many of us lived so well. He even sponsored my Scout Troop.

Lived in Lancaster. Went to Camp Springs & Springs park on Lake Wateree. Springmaid beach was between Myrtle beach and State park on the beach. Worked summers in the Lancaster plant. The Springs family was good for the area.

Your responses are a testament to the great works she and her family did in this area. I also grew up in Fort Mill and there’s no doubt my life is better/different as a result of Anne’s vision and support. I went to school using (in part) interest free loans provided by the Springs Foundation, which I promptly paid back after college to help support the next ones in line. I/we could go on and on I’m sure…suffice it to say that Anne Close changed my life and the lives of countless others as well. I still live in Fort Mill today.

Fort Mill was probably one of the most idyllic places to live/grow up because of the Close Family. I was there from 1961 to 1980. Knew all of the kids, even dated the youngest, girl that is. Mrs. Close would pick me up and take me home if she ever drove by and saw me walking. So many great memories. Wonderful lady! RIP

RIP. What a great legacy for her and her family. They touched thousands of lives for the better.
I try to do what I can to help support our domestic garment industry alive. Check out this company, from farmer to consumer it's all USA.

Grew up in fort mill myself (66-87). It was the ideal small town. The Close’s and Springs had a lot to do with that.
