Thomas' mom prefers Clemson

Jan 29, 2014, 1:08 PM

By Phil Kornblut

If she had her way, the mother of DL Cory Thomas of McCalla, AL would like her son to go to Clemson. "Clemson is number one to me," Thomas' mother said. "My son likes the school. They showed us a good time (on the official visit). They treat us like real people. I believe it's already in his mind but I don't want to speak for him. But I know from the way he talks to me it's already in his mind." Clemson coach Dabo Swinney and assistant Marion Hobby made their in home visit Monday night. Thomas' mother said she has a special fondness for Swinney because he recruited her grandson two years ago and her daughter died during that time. "Coach Swinney was right at her bedside and that was something I didn't know until I got there," she said. "And that just makes me have good feelings because I haven't gotten over her yet." Thomas visited Mississippi State last weekend and his mother said it was a positive experience. "It was fine, it was real nice. They treated us real nice." Thomas will visit Tennessee this weekend and his mother will join him on that visit as well. He has been committed to the Vols.

This is what some don't get about Dabo and our staff

Jan 29, 2014, 1:26 PM

Pretty much every school tries to play the "we're a family and will take care of you" card. However for most it's a front and they will cut the kids or something along those lines if they don't meet expectations. With Clemson and Dabo it's not a statement but a way of life. Players and family's love him because he's genuine. He means what he says and parent's pick up on that. Whether or not we get this kid I'm again reminded of why Dabo is a perfect fit for our school

You hit the nail on the head

He is great ambassador for the University. His character is evident in how he treats others, even when it seems that nobody else is looking. You can't fake genuineness.

Re: You hit the nail on the head

Jan 30, 2014, 12:34 PM

You may not fake it but, sec coaches take a special course every year (mandatory class) in faking genuineness. Urban Myer, Les Miles, and Mark Richt are the teachers/professors of the genuineness classes. Classes are held yearly at three locations. Sign up at the sec fall review for the Urban Myer class, held at OSU. The Les Miles class, held at LSU. The Mark Richt class, held at UGA. All are 3 day classes that will be held one week prior to the start of fall camp. Price for classes are, as much as each coach can genuinely fake you out for. Urban Myer has won the top genuinely fake award 3 years in a row, with Richt and Miles tied for second place all 3 years. Steve Spurrier was kicked out of last years class for being shirtless, sloppy drunk, and grossly disrespectful towards Urban Myer. Sources close to that situation said that Steve in a Slurrier voice said that Myer's mother wasn't any good at faking #######!!! Myer retaliated in a religious voice, your mother should have taught you how to hold your Schlitz better. But they will be back next year slapping each others butts telling how good of friends their wives are with each other.

This just happened this past week...

Jan 29, 2014, 1:55 PM [ in reply to This is what some don't get about Dabo and our staff ]

a woman I know has a brother in law who was recently diagnosed with a tumor. Another family member that knows a Clemson football player told the player about it, and the player told Dabo about it. Dabo called the brother in law up and left a message wishing the guy good luck with his surgery. Dabo left this message without ever having met the guy before, on a moments notice. Dabo goes above and beyond the call of duty.

Re: This is what some don't get about Dabo and our staff

Jan 29, 2014, 2:51 PM

Dabo is a genuinely compassionate, sensitive and caring individual who reaches out to those in trouble and does not seek accolades for doing so. He cares about others above just his players, and that is a unique and wonderful trait.

No offense, but Christianity is not the hallmark for this kind of individual - you either are or are not, and which religion you ascribe to does not have anything to do with it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We will just have to agree to disagree on that.

Jan 29, 2014, 4:42 PM

I think he would tell you that it is all about his Christianity.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: We will just have to agree to disagree on that.

Jan 29, 2014, 11:03 PM

Disagree all you want - there are just as many members of other faiths, and even no faith, who have the same caring, sensitive response to others. It's about who you are, and not your religious preference. The man needs to be commended on his personal response to others in need as well as others with who he comes in contact with - his personal faith is not responsible for his response to others - it may have helped to shape who he is, but he is ultimately responsible for his behavior and how he sees others and the world. Perhaps it's time to stop giving credit for an individual's humanity to everything but the individual. I honor Dabo for who he has become - not how he worships.

he is because of his belief in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

And his desire to live according to His words and examples.

Re: I believe Dabo would be the first to say that he is the way

Jan 29, 2014, 11:17 PM

Read my post above His faith is a personal thing - his actions are shaped by who he is - not how he worships.

it's kind of like saying that "we won the game today - God was with us". Am I to assume that god was not with, or did not care about, the losing team and players? Am I also to assume that when one individual who is religious exhibits the traits that we admire and extol owes all of those fine traits to his religion? Then what do we say about his neighbor who also considers himself a religious person but exhibits the kind of behavior that should land him in jail or who is disliked by everyone. You take what you learn, be it from your parents, your friends your school, and your religion - in short, the environmental influences that helped to shape him or her into the person they are - and either fashion yourself from the good teaching and experiences, or not. I repeat, it is not just about religion.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The poster spoke mostly to Dabo's character traits ...

Jan 30, 2014, 8:22 AM

Jesus Christ was a teacher, who by all historical accounts was a genuinely compassionate, sensitive and caring individual.

Those who follow the teachings of Jesus Christ exhibit these traits because they are called to emulate Jesus Christ.

You do not have to be Christian to be a genuinely compassionate, sensitive and caring individual. You can be of any faith, or no faith at all.

But, these traits are definitely the hallmark of a true Christian. If you do not have these traits, then you are not really a Christian.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The poster spoke mostly to Dabo's character traits ...

Jan 31, 2014, 1:38 AM

OK - I buy that. But you could say the same thing about a genuinely compassionate, sensitive and caring individual who is Jewish, Muslim, Hindu. That would be the Hallmark of their religion, don't you think?? But then the question arises to what do we attribute these attributes to a person of no faith who exhibits the aforementioned attributes? All I am trying to get across is there are many factors that must be taken into account, not just one.

Re: The poster you responded to mentioned that Dabo is a

Jan 31, 2014, 1:30 AM

It doesn't - but that is not the only reason he is the person he is. And to attribute everything he is to one thing is a bit misleading. Christian teaching are not the only reason Dabo has become who he is. There were lots of other environmental factors to which no one seems to want to give credit. That is all I am saying - not putting anyone's religion down!!!

And beyond Dabo's good nature and high character, the football program is in great shape. When you hear about stories like this, it makes losing to the other SC football team seem very insignificant. The program is in great hands and I hope we keep Dabo for years to come.

Jan 29, 2014, 2:55 PM

The people who have a hard time seeing that's it's not always about football or winning & losing. It's sometimes about being a decent human being and presenting a strong front for our university. Dabo is great man and full of passion and character. He's been a hell of a coach and conduit for the university.

This is the real Dabo when no one else is looking

Jan 29, 2014, 4:25 PM

Coots will say he visited the daughter because he was recruiting and it was an act. But its not. I know two people that are not recruits or VIPs that Dabo visited in the hospital because someone just asked him too. Both times he actually visited - sat down for 15-20 minutes and talked with them.

I hope Dabo has an illustrious career and retires here and that we are patient with him through the rough times. He is a good person and deserves to be treated as such.

Tennessee has 34 commits. Thomas better rethink his commitment to Tennessee. That sec kick to the curb bus will be waiting on him about this time next year. They will have to make room for next years commits some how. One year renewal scholarships in the sec mean just that. If a player isn't in the 1,2 deep rotations after their red shirt freshman/sophomore year. The bus parked in the back is their ride out of there.
